22 oz bottle poured into Spiegelau with at least a year on it

A: deep ink well blackness with a very dirty mocha head

S; Huge licorice smell with a little bit of toffee and rough whiskey smell

T: wow this beer is rich lots of sharp whiskey notes and chocolate and licorice. Has a little toffee and vanilla but mostly rich malts and a touch of coffee. The layers in this beer are quite amazing it bursts with licorice and then soaks your tongue with chocolate, than it washes over you with that whiskey taste

M: Sublime its so thick and dry this beer is so chewy its astonishing probably one of the best mouth feels on a beer I have ever had hands down. Its so thick and creamy.

O: This isn't the best used barrels for barrel aging and gives you hints of cheap whiskey but if you hang in there this beer is super rich in flavor. The base beer is fantastic and a little barrel aging does not hurt it.

Black in color with a tan head. Pretty dark and tough looking.

Aroma is chocolatey and malty with subtle hints of coffee.

Faint bourbon is noticed in the flavor, but the stout is so full flavored and heavy bodied that most other flavors mask the bourbon. Roasted malts and chocolate are the most dominant.

The bourbon barrel aging gives it a slightly smooth mouthfeel. Not quite like velvet, but close.

Thoroughly enjoyed from the 22 oz bomber. This FINE RIP pours a pitch black opaque color with a beautiful dark brown head that settles to a thick ring with nice lacing. Nose of dark cocoa, strong booze, vanilla, coffee, and dark fruits. Flavors exceed the nose with creamy dark cocoa dancing about a smooth dark coffee that is enriched by vanilla and oak nuances that are aided by heavy cream and toffee notes. Excellent creamy mouth feel settles on the back with deeply roasted malts. Light carbonation and a nice bitter roasted malt aftertaste featuring chocolate and coffee. More complexity shows itself nicely with warmth. Excellent and dangerous.

One of Ohio's best breweries.

A - Pours inky black with a thin tan head.
S - Aroma is mostly boozy.
T - Flavor is a little sweet, then black licorice with a boozy sting on finish.
M - Mouth feel is thick and chewy.
O - A big boozy sipper. I really like the licorice notes in this beer. I will definitely buy again.

Pours a heavy thick blackness with a strong barrel nose to it. Has a small coffee colored head. Well this beer is exactly what it says it is. Imperial oatmeal stout in a barrel. Can taste all of that at separate times.

Look - Jet black, a small amount of light brown head. No lacing.

Smell - Very mild smell, pleasant, dark chocolate, slight vanilla, hint of oak.

Taste - Impressed by how smooth this is. Tastes mostly of dark chocolate and bourbon, and it is mixed in perfect proportion. You definitely taste the bourbon but it is more of a complementary flavor instead of smacking you in the face.

Feel - Super smooth, thick, no carbonation.

Overall - One of the smoothest BA beers I've ever had. Good work Hoppin' Frog.

22oz bomber, silver cap (2014). Pours black with a dark brown head. Smells like earthy hops and rich chocolate. Chocolate and roasted malt dominate the taste with some bourbon, smoke, hops, and oats coming through. The mouthfeel is heavy; about what you would expect from an oatmeal RIS. Low-medium carbonation. The flavor variety is the real winner here, even though they taste somewhat unrefined.

A little smokey hazlenut, oak and dark malt on the nose with some faint bourbon. Taste is very similar to the standard Boris, but smoothed-out by the aging & picking-up some vanilla & caramel from the barrel. It certainly is not boozey or soaked in bourbon flavor like many of these aged stouts. It is very well blended, adding some new flavors to this base brew but not overpowering it. M

Look: Inky black body. Viscosity looks high. Medium dark mocha head with darker highlights.
Smell: For me, at the forefront, chalky dark, bakers chocolate. Vanilla and some toffee. If I inhale deeply enough I can catch the wafts of alcohol booziness.
Taste: Barrel and booze at the forefront. Overripe prunes and raisins are next, then comes the medium roast. For me, the backend is not something desirable. I get a sweet, more tart than not finish, but it ends clean enough. So I say, "not bad at all."
Feel: The body is a nice consistency and viscosity. That is a high-end feel. Light carb throughout the mouth, start to finish. Not thin, but robust.

Overall - I can see why this used to be a top tier RIS. The oats make this great.

Poured from a bomber at cellar temperature. No date on bottle because, well, fuck customers. I got this from a trade in the Spring of 2014, so at least a year old.

A: Pours black as night, thick and oily. Foamy light brown head that takes a few minutes to disappear.
S: The smell is beautiful. Chocolate, oak, bourbon, dark malt, vanilla. The amount of aroma, not just the quality, is really impressive.
T: Like drinking Hershey's chocolate syrup with a shot of bourbon. Just huge chocolate flavor. Silky smooth dark malts, bourbon, vanilla. Follows the nose. Maybe just a little hot, maybe I'm a little wimp.
M: THICK. Barely liquid. But really, one of the thickest beer I've had.
O: Very impressed. This is a dessert beer. A glass would have been plenty, but I get a whole bomber!

On tap at Mad Mex

Appearance: Looks like a stout to me. Black with a thin light brown head

Smell: Chocolate, deep roasted malts, vanilla, slight coconut, bourbon

Taste: Chocolate, espresso, and plenty of that vanilla and bourbon quality

Mouthfeel: Heavy medium body, good carbonation, with a slight bitter finish. Very drinkable for an imperial stout

Overall: This bad boy is $20 a bomber around me, so its nice to try this 9oz i got on tap for $5. It offers a lot in what you would expect in a great BA stout. I could use a little more body but thats nitpicking. It really opens up as it warms and is another beast all together. Highly recommend this offering

I get the faint smell of whiskey right off the bat. The pour looks like a nice dark stout but not too thick. Thin layer of tan head with darker brown gathering on the outsides, especially after a drink...nice color balance. Mouthfeel is a stout on the thin side which is welcome after having overly thick imperial stouts. Taste has nice full "earthy" flavor combining wood, nuts, and coffee with a finish of just a touch of whiskey. Easy to drink and very enjoyable.

Palate full, creamy, soft carbonation

Silver cap (2014) poured into a 0.5L Duvel tulip.

A: Not giant head, beautiful deep dark color, though.

S: Rich, bready chocolate. Some alcohol.

T: Warm, round, roasty, There is a slight sharpness from the whiskey. Somehow lighter than I expected, but still packed with flavor.

M: Thick, but not overly so.

O: Overall exactly what you want out of a barrel aged stout. There might be some room for adding malty complexity, but the beer is great the way it is.

650ml bomber poured into tulip 29/12/14 thanks kumatmebrew for the bottle

A shes black with a thin cola edge, super dark foam but it fizzes out quickly leaving no lace

S lots of fudge and chocolate cake, plenty of barrel, vanilla, coffee, bakers chocolate, char, smells solid

T lots of wood and whiskey, booze comes out a little more, dark roasted coffee and charred wood, dark licorice, tastes rather intense, amped up version of the nose, very rich and strong in the mouth

M silky on the way in and creams up from the bubbles, a little heat and a fair bit of weight, sticky on the lips with heaps of barrel on the finish

O great stuff, plenty of barrel and chocolate of all kinds, a little boozy for under 10 but drinkable and delicious

Silver cap so I'm guessing its fairly fresh, If I had a second bottle I'd sit on it for a while but that being said this is great beer today

Wow. What a great bourbon barrel aged beer - as good as any of the big hitters, but with none of the truck chain necessary to get it.

Nicely thick, perfectly bourbon-y, and full of thick roasty chocolate coffee flavors.

Deep and delicious!

Rich and complex mix of bittersweet chocolate, coffee, and a bit of caramel. Bourbon is there just enough but not as prominent as other BBA beers I've head. Rounds out with some vanilla notes. Think they hit it just right. Silky smooth and mouth coating. Really liked this one and hope to be able to find somewhere this season.

Love imperial stouts. Been sampling lots of em lately, many barrel aged, and this one stood out enough to warrant my first ever review. It poured black as ink and remarkably, the half finger of head resulting from a fast pour was almost black too! Low carbonation and lots of flavor. Think concentrated imperial stout. Think stout syrup. This is to other imperial stouts what a balsamic reduction is to balsamic vinegar.

Not at all boozy, and no bitter tannins detected puts this one high on my list over other oak BA and bourbon/whiskey BA stouts I've tried. Compared to another Hoppin' Frog offering, I had DORIS the week before and highly prefer this BA BORIS over DORIS 10 to 1, not that I didn't enjoy DORIS. I just liked BA BORIS THAT much.

Huge heat and burbon notes, lots of great flavor and complexity. Has a bit too much heat and 'muddled chocolate' taste for me to really fall in love with~

Look: Opaque black with a half finger mocha head. Mild activity. Poured thick and black. Smell: Rich on roasted coffee, dark chocolate, warm vanilla, dark cherries, more dark chocolate and a big fruity oak finish. Bourbon is a little sharp but overall smells great.

Taste: Big refreshing coffee notes like the expensive kind that has hints of pitted fruits and slightly nutty, followed by a rich sweet warming vanilla, then back to the coffee only this time a bit more bitter that gives way to rich dark chocolate and a unmissable bourbon soaked oak that is fantastic. Tasty.

Mouthfeel: Rich and thick. Sits like motor oil on the palate and finishes wet unlike most BA beers I have had.

Overall: An outstanding barrel aged stout from hoppin frog I tried the B.O.R.I.S. at the brewery and couldn't wait to try the BA version and sure enough they had it. I'm just glad I had the insight to pick up two! Love the big coffee and pitted fruits and how it meshes with the warm vanilla. The wet finishes is also really nice because I hate it when a BA beer dries out super fast so it can't linger on the palate. There could maybe me more oak but I still love this beer and that's a minor grip. Definitely a must try when in ohio!

Impenetrably dark. Smells like oatmeal, bourbon, buckwheat pancake, and a bit of maple syrup. Tastes similar to the smell, mixed with cola and a hint of coco.
Sticks to the lips a bit. Perfectly subtle carbonation. Excellent beer!

2013 vintage according to store label. White cap of that even means anything.

A: A viscous dark brown that matches the color of the brown glass from which it pours. Opaque. Dark brown head that disappears. No lacing. Engine oil. No visible carbonation.

S: Waves of smooth bourbon escape from the bottle and glass. Intense roasted malt and sweet notes of fresh vanilla bean and milk chocolate.

T: Bourbon, oatmeal, figs and coke. The finish is moderately dry with a hint of bitter coffee and cocoa.

M: Full bodied. Velvet. Real slick and smooth. The booze tingles and lingers for a bit. Mildly carbonated.

O: Big flavors. Smooth throughout and really opens as it warms. Never too boozy and never too sweet. A slight bitterness in the finish that keeps it even keeled

Very dark, almoust black, engine oil with just a little head that's on the top like golden-brown whipped cream.

Nose: Coffee, toffee, roasted malt, dark chocolate, mocha, leather, kakao and dark syrup. Almoust a little sour nose.

Taste: Wow! This is f-ing awesome! Sweet coffee, oatmeal, brownies, boubon , vanilla, red berries and dried fruit.

Mouth: Large complex body with smooth, silky taste. Very soft carbonation.

This is almoust a perfect stout. I'm glad I bought 7 bottles (six to cellar).

Appearane - The beer was deep black with mocha bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass.

Aroma - The booze jumps out in the aroma with notes of vanilla and oak in the background.

Taste- The initial impression is boozy. The booze is a little sticky and hot in the aftertaste. The chocolate notes that were detectable in the beginning fade.

Mouthfeel - The mouthfeel in this stout is near perfect. It coats the tongue and lingers nicely.

Overall - Though a little pricey, this is an easily accessible yet solid version of the style.

A poor representation of BA stout. While not bad or abrasive like some of the Arcadia beers, it makes you regret getting it everytime. Just too hot and unbalanced to be enjoyable.
