Poured into a snifter.

Appearance. As black as brown can get; can't even see through this one at the edges. Pours with a half a finger of cappuccino brown head, which quickly dissipates to almost nothing.

Smell. Very malt forward, with a nice roasty chocolatey character that borders on a creamy caramel. There seems to be a slight herbaceous character, which I notice a lot in dry hopped beers.

Taste. Starts out with a quick hit of sharp bitterness. This is followed by very bitter roasted malts, or espresso... there seems to be a theme already. The middle is filled with a resinous, piney hop presence with a residual sweetness that keeps trying to peek its way out. The finish is at first slightly sweet and roasty, but quickly becomes bitter and resinous.

Mouthfeel. Very thick, as one would expect from an oatmeal stout. Low carbonation, but it isn't missed or needed.

Right now this beer is a bitter mess to me. It has IPA levels of bitterness from both hops and roasted malts, but right now is not balanced. It seems at though all of the elements are there, but they are both overwhelmed by bitterness and lack the complexion of some better imperial stouts I've had.

look: 3.75 | smell: 5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.75

Look: Syrupy pour with small, very thick, creamy and dark, chocolaty head. Has relatively fast, but smooth retention, leaves a very thick, thin layer that mostly diminishes over time - very little lacing (but good, fine when the layer was still present) as a consequence. Haven't seen many as dark as this one, pitch black with brown hue.

Smell: Wonderful, the first thing I've noticed is the freshness from fruity/herbal hops and light dark wood berries sourness. Amounts of hops detected are surprising. The berries are accompanied by black currant, dry raisins and figs. All this makes a very fresh feeling. Then there is the deep roast, chocolate is dominant (mix of milk and dark) and mocha. A strong sweet backbone. Smell is full and fat but not stuffy - good counterbalance is made with fresh hops and berry esters. Also some faint alcohol crawls out when the beer warms up.

Taste: Pleasant medium sweetness with strong milk chocolate and mocha notes, that goes into even stronger dark roasted dynamics that end up in the medium-high bitterness. The bitter part starts with roast, chocolate notes and at the end goes dark roasted coffee, burned toast with light to medium hops to keep the harmony going - these make up a pleasant after-taste. In between there are still present light dark berry and currant sour notes with some dry fruits lingering on your lips. Strong hops come back every time you burp. Hint of alcohol present towards the end.

Mouthfeel: Full medium-heavy body, creamy enough, but not the fattest stout out there. Low-medium carbonation, suiting. Very light warming from the alcohol.

Overall: A massive one, good counterbalance with hops to the big dark malt character full of deep roast. Can't wait to get my hands on the barrel-aged one.

Pours pitch black with a tiny dark brown head that almost instantly vanishes. No lacing.

Rich sweet coffee, chocolate, leathery, bit of dark fruit. Very sweet and smells so amazing.

MMM. Taste follows smell. Chocolatey coffeelike sweetness. So amazing.

Thick, slick, and full. Warming alcohol aftertaste. Almost no carbonation.

This is one of my favorite stouts ever. Possibly the best stout out there. At least as far as what's available to me. Simply amazing. Near perfect stout.

No apparent date on the bottle.

Beer is jet black with a small tan head. Head gone quickly.

The nose contains chocolate, molasses, roasted malt and a bit of dark fruit. Nice smell.

Flavour is also very good. Chocolate is the main flavour, but there is anise, molasses and roasted malt as well. Relatively sweet.

Full bodied, moderately carbonated. Quite slick and sticky.

Overall, very good. Perhaps too sweet but still very nice.
