A- poured very aggressive with about a 1in tan head and is a very nice red with small particles floating around. Head dissipated rather quickly.
S-Sweet caramel malts come across nicely but its about the only thing that i can pick up.
T-heavy sweetness but it doesnt come across as cloyingly with a strong malt backbone.
M-medium body, thin creamy feel.
O- A+ this is an amazing beer very well done and im so sad that i only had 1 of these. I'm was blown away by almost every aspect of this beer.

Black cap

A: Pours very clear, almost no haze. Gold/amber color with no head.
S: Smells kinda like cognac.... weird. Very sweet, butterscotch, caramel, vanilla. A bit of brown sugar and booziness too.
T: SUPER sweet. Almost port-like. Tastes like LME (liquid malt-extract), caramel, toffee, vanilla, coconut. A bit of cherry and apple in there too. Sweet, toasted oak too. Finishes sweet and fruity, almost like orange/caramel candy.
M: Medium/full bodied with almost no carbonation. Sweet and syrupy while drinking.
O: This beer was ok. Taste was too sweet and all over the place.

22oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a darkness snifter. purchased at the brewery.

pours out a really nice deep reddish, bronze color, maybe even a little burnt orange. not much head, even from a vigorous pour, but the thin layer that appeared faded to a rather retentive ring. just some light spotty lace at first. a little bit of legs noticable if you look hard enough.

big boozey whiskey, oaky barrel aromas, fruity esters, a little apple, lots of burnt caramel, carmalized sugars. smells nice.

lots of delicious sweet flavors. sweet caramels, carmelized, burnt sugars really cover the palate. some really nice oaky, vanilla, boozey whiskey flavors, some honey as well. a range of fruity estery flavors, mostly candy caramel apple like, a bit of rum soaked cherry. a touch of spicey rum like alcohol on the finish.

boozey, but not overly so, just the right level. big, sweet, sticky body. carbonation is a little on the low side which works very well with this beer. silky smooth.

definatly a top notch barleywine, worthy of all the hype. there definatly is a lot of sweetness going on, but its not at all cloying. right up there with mother of all storms IMO, but well have to see how it stacks up to king henry as soon as i open my bottle. im glad i got some bottles to sit on.

Blind Tasting and Review

(Aged for 6 months)

Clear, dark orange with a very minimal head. There's some slight sediment floating around the beer. This leaves the glass oily, but no lace in the classic manner.

Sweet, somewhat simple, though very nice aroma of caramel, toffee, vanilla, and bourbon.

The flavor is similarly nice, with good amounts of bourbon, oak, vanilla, caramel, and slight dark fruit.

Medium bodied with low to moderate carbonation.

Very nice, though I was disappointed in this one, only because my expectations were so high. This is quite nice.

This one came highly rated by a friend. Thanks to BlessedBeBeer for this one. Poured from a 22oz. bomber into a Southampton oversize snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Long pour yields a .5 finger creamy off-white head with poor retention. Beer is a clear, dark orange amber. Lacing is spotty and sparse with little cling but solid legs. Just above average for the style considering the poor head.

Nose is rich caramel, molasses, and brown sugar. Deep booziness lingers in the background. Very sweet. Vanilla and barrel characteristics are prominent also. Really nice.

Opens rich caramel and molasses. There's a pleasant sweet tartness that comes from the booze. A creamy hop profile sits in the background, happily suppressed by the barrel characteristics. More molasses and brown sugar towards the end with a spicy, hot finish and a sweet, sticky aftertaste. Flavors are very distinct but complement each other perfectly.

Medium bodied with low carbonation. Oily and silky in the mouth and warm and spicy going down with a messy finish and a lingering aftertaste. Super smooth but a touch thin for the style.

A buddy described this as "almost as good as M". I wouldn't say that but this is very very solid in its own right and has tons of aging potential. Rich and complex now with a flavor profile that is perfectly complementary. Definitely one to sit on.

Barrel-Aged Naked Evil pours an attractive color. It’s mostly clear. Backlighting gives it a really nice crimson look. Love the color. A soft, light vanilla colored head barely covers the surface. It disappears quickly, leaving a very light, spotty lacing behind. Maybe the abv was a little too much for it. In any event, I do like the color.

The nose is quite good. It smells quite malty and sweet. Chock full of caramel. Whiskey follows. It has a moderate presence that complements the malt base extremely well. The barrel-aging definitely imparted oak and vanilla, as well. There are some light fruity notes. Apple is the most notable. Belgian yeast is definitely noted and smells spicy. Alcohol is there, but smells pretty well integrated. It smells rich, complex, and delicious! Excellent!

The flavor is extremely impressive! It definitely has a very sweet, rich caramel/toffee malt base. If you’re averse to sweet beer, this one may be a problem. Whiskey has a moderately strong presence and is a very nice complement to the malts. It never overpowers the other flavors. Vanilla, coconut, and oak are also noted. Hints of apple and pear appear at times. Belgian yeast works much better than I anticipated. It adds a bit of a spicy flavor and really drives the flavor up a notch. Alcohol is there, but never seems too strong or hot. Finishes spicy, malty, and very sweet.

Barrel-Aged Naked Evil has a body that’s on the lighter side of full. Carbonation is very light and soft. It’s extremely smooth and silky. Goes down far, far too easy for a big, barrel-aged English Barleywine.

I’ve come to expect excellent beer from Hoppin’ Frog Brewery. Every so often, they release a beer that’s nothing short of exceptional. Barrel-Aged Naked Evil is one of those cases. I’m shocked at how good it is. The only slight downside is that it’s a bit too sweet. A little less would be more. That’s nitpicking though. This is great stuff! Highly recommended!
