Dark brown, tinged with violet, moderately thin for the ABV and barrel-aged treatment. Belgian yeast in the recipe, but not particularly noticeable in the result. Nice cocoa, plum, wine tannins, and vanilla notes, with modest barrel character.

Pours a translucent mahogany hue with no head. Nose expresses light toffee notes. Taste follows nose. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a still carbonation and a slight oiliness to the texture. Overall, this beer was quite enjoyable and has held up well. Very little oxidation present; however, the barrel-aging had really dropped off.

1 PINT 6 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a snifter
Batch 2
This beer pours a deep rust color with copper highlights. It is topped with less than an inch of tan head that leaves no head.
The smell is sweet with molasses, fig and date aromas.
The taste has dark fruit, namely fig and date. It is not as sweet as the smell indicated.
Full bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel
This is a tasty old beer. The alcohol is not noticeable accept in the warming effect. Barelywines tend to age well and this is no expection.

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep copper covered by a finger of dense off white head which fades quickly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing.
S: Smells of toasted malts, toffee, intense orchard fruits with some oak and vanilla
T: The taste on this beer is toffee, orchard fruits, caramel, vanilla, oak, heavily aged hops, and more orchard fruits. On the swallow this one is just awash in orchard fruits with more caramel, vanilla, toasted malts, and oak.
M: This beer has a fairly full and slightly syrupy body. Carbonation is light but adequate for the style while the beer has a drying finish which is expected.
O: Overall this one is really interesting. The belgian yeast and the barrels add a really nice dimension to the beer that adds a lot of flavor and complexity you don't normally find in a barleywine. This one is definitely worth trying if you can find it and enjoy the style.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a Brooklyn Brewery tulip glass.
A: Hazy to nearly opaque rich brown. A thin tan head that fades atop low levels of visible carbonation.
S: Sweet toffee, whiskey, vanilla and oaken barrel. Toasted malts that are sticky sweet. Nothing crazy, but pretty decent on the nose.
T: Whiskey and sticky toasted malts. Toffee and Heath bar, vanilla, and yeasty with some mild fruity esters. Oak tannins and accompanying dryness. It finishes with a sticky toffee toasted sweetness with mild whiskey and ethanol flavors.
M: Full-bodied and sticky, average heft to body for style. The alcohol is apparent, but not overly hot for a barrel-aged barleywine. Low carbonation sensation.
O: Certainly not a bad beer, but not quite what I'd hoped for in a barrel-aged barleywine with this one’s reputation. Enjoyable, just a bit of a letdown for me.

Bottle:
A matte brown that appears to be a little murky, but that look turns out to be a little deceiving. The Creamy froth atop the beer ends in a thick ring. With this sipper, the glass gets a brief sheet of beige bubbles before the returning ring of head reclaims it; since the ring is so thick, there isn't a chance for lace to form.
Nose is wood, leather, and light bourbon from the barrel aging, with a bitter dark fruit or sweeter dark cherry from the base beer - fig, earthen tones. There's even a little freshly dug up mushroom of all things. In some whiffs, the scent of chewing tobacco comes out, with the leathery notes and some wood. At near room temperature, a lightly tart caramel scent comes about, with the barrel fading to the background.
Taste is a little more tangy tart, a golden raisin taste; I can also get a little bit of the leather before the caramel maltiness comes to bear. The alcohol presence is felt next, providing a little burn. It's hard to distinguish if this is from the beer itself or the barrel, they seem merged quite well here. A note of plum and the bitterness of hops is also noticed. The latter can't compete with the dark fruit, caramel and vanilla (though it does a better job in the lingering taste).
This is a pretty nicely constructed barelywine that gets a nice compliment from the barrel aging. There is a decent presence of alcohol, and the lingering bitterness almost seems like the base is an American version of a barleywine. I cannot say I noticed any specific Belgian influence, though I could see some of the dark fruit notes being at home in a Belgian Quad.

Got this bottle as an extra in a trade years ago. I felt like an old barleywine, so I figured I'd finally pop it open. 2012 vintage, so whatever batch that is. Deep dark brown pour, small tan ringlet. Of course lots of sugar in the aroma, notes of vanilla, and very low oxidation, which essentially faded after the beer breathed for a few minutes. Lots of dark sugars and fruits in the taste, mellow barrel/booze, fruitcake, subtle vanilla, touch of cardboard. Viscous mouthfeel, full body. Never had this one fresh, but at nearly five years old, I'd say it aged well and certainly drank well.

Light fizzy head fades instantly, clear dark mahogany color
Nose big sweet malt, candy reddish malt, toasted little biscuity, plenty of oak, raw American oak and whisky, just a touch of oxidation, toffee and candy syrup, nice vanilla barrel and hint of dark fruits, then starts to turn smooth bourbon.
Taste brings big sweet candy, toffee and biscuity cereal toasted grain, candy syrup and brandy soaked raisin dark fruit, fruity in general, touch oak vanilla barrel, very little whiskey mostly late, a little oxidation, little bitterness, candy raisin lingering, sticky syrupy and touch of booze.
Mouth is fuller bod, decent carb, little booze.
Overall mixed, some great base malts, candy raisin etc, pretty sweet, whiskey came on the nose but barely taste, little oxidation.

O - Overall this was a solid barelywine, the barrel was a bit on the subtle side. Still, quite solid.
