22oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a darkness snifter. blue cap = "BORIS 100". purchased at the brewery.

pours out completely opaque black with a nice creamy dark mocha colored head. kept a nice thin creamy layer with some spotty lace. a little legs left on the glass as well.

nothing really imperial stout like to the aroma. chalky, almost slightly yeasty with just a hint of alcohol. some faint chocolate and roast, fruity esters, and maybe a little burnt grain. the smell almost reminded me of several mediocre stout like homebrews ive either made or tried. becomes more and more fruity as it warms.

much better taste than the aroma suggested. somewhat sweet, roasted burnt grains, lots of nice chocolate flavors, a nice hoppy bite close to the finish that leaves a substantial bitterness.

slick and creamy. full bodied. carbonation was a bit too much at first.

having never had the regular boris, i cant really tell you the differences the english base malt had, but it is definatly noticable both in the taste and aroma. a pretty good impy stout, but with all the other great examples of the style out there, its hard to say if id ever buy this again. it does leave me longing to try all the other variations of this beer however.

Bottle poured into a glass

A - Dark brown with chocolate brown foam that sits on the edge. Looks to be medium body and leaves a slight coating on the glass

S - Smells of dark chocolate, light caramel, roasted coffee, vanilla, and slight bitter hops

T - Sweet vanilla and caramel up front. Dark chocolate and roasted coffee in the middle that gives it a nice balance. Finish is roasted coffee, light orange peel and caramel. A nice and complex stout!

MF - Nice, creamy mouthfeel with light carbonation. Slightly sticky . The finish is roasted coffee and slightly astringent.

O - A really solid stout. Has a good and complex flavor profile that balances between roasted coffee and sweeter caramel.

B.O.R.I.S. #100 pours a very dark chocolate fudge color. It’s opaque. I’m not seeing any light cut through. It’s capped with a very dark, mocha colored head that stands about two fingers tall. Looks really nice. Retention was quite good. Lacing was sticky and rather light overall. I do like the color a lot though.

The nose is good. It’s very malty up front. It features a mix of chocolate, caramel, and roasted malt notes. It definitely smells a bit sweet and maybe a little sugary. Roasted coffee is easily noted and smells nice. A secondary scent of dark fruit comes through nicely. Smells mostly like plum to me. It blends in pretty well and adds something positive to the mix. Alcohol is mildly noticeable. Doesn’t smell all that strong.

The flavor definitely impresses…in a big way. A mix of sweet caramel and bittersweet, dark chocolate kicks things off. The sweet flavor seems to be a little stronger and is a bit sugary. Roasted coffee and dark fruit flavors of raisin and plum emerge next. They add quality depth and complement the malt flavors extremely well. The dark fruit adds a tangy-like flavor that’s nice. Very subtle notes of molasses and charred barley arrive late. Alcohol is there, but doesn’t seem too strong. It’s not warm or hot. Finishes a little burnt, sweet, and malty.

B.O.R.I.S. #100 has a medium body that feels nice and smooth. It doesn’t feel quite as thick and full as it should for a big stout. Having said that, it has a nice feel and certainly goes down easy. This bomber isn’t presenting much of a problem at all.

B.O.R.I.S. #100 is definitely a nice addition to Hoppin’ Frog’s roster. Frankly, it’s not materially different from the regular B.O.R.I.S. The biggest difference to me is that it seems a bit sweeter. That’s all. Not a great thing. Not a bad thing. Just a little different. Worth a try? Absolutely.

Jet black creamy body with a 1/4" of cinnamon colored head that lasts less than 30 seconds, then it's gone completely.

The smell is heavy on the roast with notes of dark chocolate and espresso.

The taste is robust with bittersweet dark chocolate, coffee grounds, and mild char. It's sweet and walks up to the line of being too sweet, but stops just short.

The mouthfeel is far and away my favorite aspect. It's creamy, smooth, and low carbonation. Thick and heavy as it should be.

It's a solid RIS. It's been a while since I've had the original BORIS so I can't discern the difference, but I remember enjoying the original and can say the same for this one.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch dark brown head. The head doesn't stay around for too long, and there's a decent amount of lacing on the glass. Aroma is sweet and roasty, the brew smells like roasted malt, bittersweet and milk chocolate, oats, and a little bit of dark fruit and coffee. However, the taste seems a lot more roasty than it is sweet. It tastes like roasted/burnt/charred malt, coffee, bittersweet and milk chocolate, and some anise and dark fruit. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's a bit slick with moderate carbonation. I think this is a solid overall beer, but I don't like it nearly as much as I do the regular BORIS. And with this being a little more expensive ($10.99 a bottle) than the regular version, I won't be buying another bottle. But I do think it's worth a try since it's a one time beer.

Not sure this is actually a different beer than the regular version, but it is listed so I'll give it a review.

A - Black beer, brown head. Didn't have much retention, no stick left. Decent legs on the beer.

S - Chocolate, a little bit of fruity yeast, nice roast, char, toasted english malts. Pretty inviting, and not overbearing.

T - Taste is much like the nose. Char, toasted malts, and cocoa stand out in this one. Some moderate coffee bitterness. Decently sweet, but the char and toasted malts give it nice balance.

M - Close to full bodied, smooth, moderate carbonation.

O - Good beer. Enjoyed it, drank it quite easily. Has a nice and easy drinking flavor profile, would do it again.

Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.

Figured I should try this "English" variant while I still had the chance. Tickers gonna tick, and all that... Anyway, this stuff pours a deep obsidian topped by a finger or so of dark tan foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, cocoa, molasses, and a kiss of coffee. The taste brings in more of the same, with the cocoa being joined by a dusting of dark chocolate powder. Things are fairly sweet, but there's enough bitterness in the roast and coffee to balance things out very nicely. The body is a straight medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a smooth, mildly creamy feel. Overall, there isn't very much difference that I can find between this BORIS and the "American" one, but I can tell that this one is slightly creamier. Either way, they're both tasty, so I'm not gonna nitpick...

The 100th batch of BORIS. Brewed with all English Pale Ale Malt instead of their normal American base malts. Meant to be sweeter and fuller-bodied than the original.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. The head is tough to conjure at first but suddenly rushed up once I added some height to my pour.

Black, thick and viscous, with a really dark fudge colored head. Typical BORIS so far. unfortunately the foamy head wasn't as thick or tight as it could be, and this left little lace behind as a result.

Smells dark and roasty. A bit of dark fruit wafts up, but overall the denseness of the beer is limiting the aroma.

The taste is as wonderful as BORIS always is. It does seem extra roasty though. Bitter coffee and a bit of char are very big flavors. This was billed as sweeter than the original, and while I am not yet convinced, I will say that it does taste different. Nothing huge, but I have had enough BORIS to discern that this has been tinkered with. I wanted to do a side by side, but the price and strength of this beer made me withdraw the idea.

The mouthfeel is dry and coating, it's like licking a weathered old oak barrel, replete with the charred interior. Nice and warming deep in the throat, but never hot or boozy. And of course, thick as all get-out.

Overall an excellent beer, and a nice reminder of why the regular BORIS has won gold at GABF twice in 4 years. At a couple dollars more than regular BORIS can typically be found for though, this isn't something to be buying regularly (not that one could). Either way, a nice treat and fun surprise release from the brewery. I like that Hoppin' Frog has been more active with special releases this year.

For their 100th batch of the undisputed most popular beer, their BORIS the Crusher takes on a minor face lift that foregoes the doldrum-neutrality of the crisp malts that comprise U.S. beers and and initiates the fuller flavored and textured biscuity malt of England.

Like the other versions of BORIS, the beer pours with a motor oil viscocity of opaque inky black beer and slowly separates the mocha colored head from the liquid with a thick and structured attitude. No lacing necessary, the beer's foam stance fades to a dainty necklace of lace and lucky to retain anything to stand out against the oiliness of port or cognac.

Rich aromas of fruit nearly rival that of roast and chocolate as a licorice-like character charges the nose in more aggressive ester character than is usually found in stouts. But the balanced nose celebrates the malty-rich scent of burnt caramel, bready starch, dark chocolate, espresso, walnut, rum, and grape.

Flavors take over first with rich chocolaty sweetness that's met with espresso roast and bitterness before weaving in elements of cola nut, red grape juice, black licorice, caramelly bourbon, mild vanilla, oak, and slight vinous sherry or port character. Where the balance lies heavily in the espresso, cherries, chocolate, fruit, and alcohol the beer is always complemented by accessory taste and sensations that seem to make a new impression at every turn.

About as full bodied as stouts get, this beer should be served with a fork. Chewy, oily, rich, and completely mouth coating, the beer's supple carbonation allows for the most succulent texture of velvet and silk to complement the sweet and smoky roast, milk chocolate, heavy cream, and creeping alcohol sweet/warm textures. Long and savory, this beer sees no finish as the linger of taste and texture extends pleasantly into the next sip.

Forget about pairings, this sweet fruity and roasty ale satisfies the palate and stomach with every bit the reward as the most die hard death-by-chocolate whatevers or post dinner lattes. The different malt varieties here versus that of the standard but world class BORIS might add a more fortified maltiness but the differences are minute. What's not subtle is the tilt toward fruity grape, licorice, and port that this variety exudes.

22 ounce bottle into snifter; bottled in late Fall 2011, so this is a year old now. Pours pitch black color with a small dark tan head with decent retention that reduces to a thin lace that lingers. Slight spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, toffee, toast, coffee, molasses, bread, light char, oatmeal, and light dark fruits. Damn nice aromas with good balance, strength, and complexity; can definitely see the bready toast character from the English malts. Taste of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, toffee, coffee, molasses, light char, toast, biscuit, light nuttiness, raisin, oatmeal, and light tobacco. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, caramel, toast, molasses, toffee, biscuit, dark fruit, oatmeal, and light tobacco on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic balance, complexity, and robustness of flavors; with a very pronounced malt backbone and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy, thick, and slick mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent Imperial stout! Great balance and complexity of highly robust flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering as expected.
