Fresh 2013 vintage. 22oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours black with subtle brown hues coming though; khaki head that eventually fades but leaves really nice retention and lacing. There's some sediment that shows up as you get towards the end of the bottle. The aromas start off pretty dank with lots of roasted chocolate malts. There are also hints of grapefruit and pine needles. The flavors are pretty bold and robust. Tons of dark chocolates along with the hops give this one a solid bitterness. Flavors aren't too sweet. Slightly soapy. Very earthy and leafy. More pine resin which really stands out as well. Mouthfeel is full-bodied and heavy, but still comes off as watery due to the low carbonation. It's still a very smooth drinking beer, despite feeling heavy at times. Alcohol goes unnoticed.

I'm glad Hoppin' Frog decided to brew this one again. It's a very good Imperial Black IPA. Well crafted. Recommended.

Poured from bottle to a tulip. An inch or so of light tan head over a very dark brown body. Smells of malt chocolate, prune, burnt butter(?)

Tastes chocolate coffee, less hoppy to me than others have mentioned(ill need to check the age). Very tasty but a slowish drinker(pretty hot on my back porch tonight so that may have something to do with it). Overall, very good variation on the style. Absolutely a black ale and not a black ipa(at least to me)

Appearance: pours a black color with a 1" head that slowly falls to a thick surface covering.

Smell: pine, citrus, and dark chocolate rise from the glass into the nose.

Taste: big malty profile here. Dark chocolates, pine, grapefruit, prunes, and a hearty bitterness create a nicely flavored ale. Alcohol is well hidden here too.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Lightly crisp throughout with some dryness late.

Overall: a slower sipping beer from the great flavor profile. Defintely worthy of a try from anyone who likes the style.

This is the first or second black IPA that I've had that holds a candle to Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous (the other being Alaskan, which was maybe a little too roasty). It's got a really hoppy IPA nose (you can't tell it's a black IPA with your eyes closed when you smell it), and the taste is well balanced between the roastiness and chocolate tones of the "black" and the juicy hops of the "IPA." Excellent.
