American hops dominate this Rye I.P.A, creating an assertive citrus and passion fruit character. An old-world flavor from rye malt adds the perfect compliment to Goose Juice’s big, satisfying hop flavor and aroma. Originally home-brewed by our beloved brewer Goose, its wonderful combination of flavors inspired us to brew this specialty I.P.A.

Taster at HF taproom. Brass pour, clear, thin head, solid lacing. Fruity aroma with heavy rye notes. Taste brings the rye sourness, light fruity flavors and a bitterness that hangs around.

Poured from a bomber into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Semi-opaque copper pour with massive fluffy white head. Crazy retention and lacing.

S: Rye... whiskey notes, caramel malts, and fruit juice. Kind of medicinal in a frontier sawbones sort of way.

T/F: Biscuity grains and caramel mix with fruit juice for some sweetness. The rye is sharp, bitter, and pungent and gives it a whiskey/boozey feel to it. Citrus and tobacco underneath... all of that followed by a huge dose of tropicals. Earthy... medium in body. Sticky and oily on the tongue. The finish is citrus and rye.

O: Not a bad beer but kind of a bizarre melange of flavors. Fruity and tropical... sharp rye grains, sweet, bitter, and boozy..... and if you'd told me this had been barreled for a bit I would have believed you. Definitely one worth trying.

Dear Hoppin' Frog,

Stick to stouts.

Oooh, did I just say that? Yeeeaaaah. So it's not my favorite IPA. It's not my favorite rye IPA.

I get a little excited about the style. Naturally I got little excited about this beer. My excitement was short lived.

It's... uhhhh... bitter. Hoppy? Some rye?... maybe? Sort of medicinal.

I love you Hoppin' Frog, but aside from the pretty color... this one's a no-go from now on.

I found this today at the best Giant Eagle (Rocky River). Nice one.

It is a cloudy dark yellow with reasonable fizz. There is a cool WAY hoppy pine arom. This stuff is resinated.

The taste is a tangy hoppy thing. Completely over the top. The malt profile is there, but hidden by hops. Sometimes I don't like such one dimensional brews, but this one is pretty decent. The aroma builds too.

This is a highly recommended Hoppin Frog. I give those guys blind faith for all their previous great brews. They deserve it. Try it. I will buy it again.

As an IPA, it's just ok. The amount of sediment in the non-dated bomber I had was abnormally high. Like a glass of orange juice with pulp. The head on this brew was like the foam at a DIY carwash and never went away. The flavor was not really good enough to get past the feel. So many great beers in this world right now. I recommend taking a pass on this one.

Amber with a dense, beige, two finger head.

Smell is orange, pine, Trix, and very pungent, rotting preach! Peach is all over this. I get a hint of broccoli occasionally.

Taste is fruity Trix, with super dank, sweaty peach again! Some pine as well.

Really dense, fluffy soft feel.

Holy shit this is way better than I remember it, and it is now one of my favorite IPAs of theirs.

-Spiegelau ipa glass. No bottling info.

A: Swirling effervesce within a orangish-red colored body of generally good clarity. A two finger, foamy beige head sits undisturbed for quite some time. Nice dark coloring, solid foam capping and a very good sheet coating for lace creates a tempting visual.

S: The passion fruit hoppiness is strong and perfumy upon first uncapping. Sweet tropical (pineapple-berry) notes combine with a wet grapefruit juice, kiwi, and tints of mango. Very good maltiness blends in with juicy citrus-pine that are dripping wet along a sweetened fruitiness. Very good initial scent that has a moderate duration and fresh and wet fruit nature.

T: The toasted rye is well played here in the flavor department, deeply toasted golden brown bread with a peppery flair. Toasted grapefruit citrus peel is flavorful, as with some fresh juicy pine hop oils. Passion fruit, mango and a hint of wine barrel (yes i'm aware its not aged but still has the winey barrel flair) along with some spicy citrus toast. A bit of pear-grape yeastiness teases near the finish with a peppery woodiness and dry hopping encore.

M: Nice weight on the mouthful, slight carbonation, chewy depth. Oily hop resins and toasted warmth round things out.

O: Love how the alcohol, hops and malt all play off one another in perfect harmony. Perfectly orchestrated, very little abv% detection, toasty warm malting, oily hop oils and tropical fruit all combine for an aptly named drink. Solid outstanding rating all around.
