Poured from a bottle into a Bell's Snifter. It pours very dark with just a bit of light sneaking through. Mahogany highlights. Nice 2 fingers of tan head with good retention and really nice lacing. Nose is a bit faint, but I do pick up some light roasted notes and a little bit of coffee, though not as much as I expected.

The beer has a somewhat full body and a pretty firm feel, though it is a bit thinner than I would like. There is a slightly sweet malty note on the tip of the tongue, followed by nice bittersweet coffee notes. I feel this beer could use a little bit more sweetness and a bit more body to support the coffee. Still, the flavor is very pleasant and strikes a nice balance between drinkability and roasty flavor - the hallmark of a good porter.

Overall, a good porter, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit disappointed. I expected a nice, creamy, semisweet, silky-smooth beer with intense flavors of coffee and chocolate. This beer lacked the complexity of the porters from Great Lakes and Founders and was a bit overpriced for the quality.

1603rd Review on BA
Bottle to Hoppin Frog Snifter

Thanks to JM03 for this bottle

App- A nice dark brown pour. Pretty dense throughout the glass and only has a about 1/4" head even with a healthy pour and a couple swirls to awaken the beer. When the head was there it was a bit tan and left maybe a couple dots of cling. It was nice but wanted to see more.

Smell- I liked this beer on the aromatic side. Had a good amount of roast behind it like a small black cup of coffee and the freshness of actual coffee beans. Matched against a bit of a roasted malt with a bit of dark chocolate. A bit light all around but nice.

Taste- Its a nice porter. I will say that the base porter does seem to get lost a bit with the addition of the coffee and what I will say is a bit too much roasted malt but is actually smoothed out a bit by the chocolate.

Mouth- The body and feel on this was very good. It was nice to see a fairly less grainy medium body and balanced out by the coffee. The carbonation was a bit of a low-medium and even a couple swirls were needed to aerate this one. A healthy bit of coffee and chocolate are the residual flavors.

Drink- It was a very tasty beer. I appreciate Hoppin Frog and am glad John sent this one down. Very balanced and not overdone with the coffee as I ran into with Epics BBB.

Served in a Three Floyds Teku glass.

A - pours a clean looking tobacco colored brown. From a vigorous pour, a nearly 3 finger deep frothy head that's dark sand in colored. The head maintains longer than I was expectd, leaving some traces of lacing.

S - gourment coffee - more like Starbucks than Folgers. Yummy! Roasty, slightly acrid and chocolate.

T - lots of coffee roastiness paired with lots of sweet milk chocolate and a tad of sweetness. A slight bitterness linger but it seems to be more of a roasty malt and coffee bitterness than hop bitterness. A tad of fruitness, most linkely a yeast profile.

M - full bodied. Slick and creamy on the tongue. Very nice complement to the loads of flavor found in the bottle.

D - surprisingly easy to drink. I found myself drinking well over half the bottle while writing.

Overall, a damn tasty beer - I'm going to find a few more bottles tomorrow. The mouthfeel and gourmet coffee flavors and sweet chocolates make this beer so special. I'm a big a Breakfast Stout fan but would pick this up most any day over it.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that sticked around for a while. There's a small amount of lacing. It smells like black coffee and roasted malt. Doesn't sound like much, but it does smell good! It tastes like coffee, roasted malt, and a bit of bittersweet chocolate. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's creamy and a bit slick with moderate carbonation. This is certainly a coffee dominant brew. I think it's good overall, and I'd buy it again. $8.99 a bottle.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark brown with a small 1 finger light mocha head. Head settles to a film fairly quickly. Leaves plenty of lacing on the glass.

S: Smells of amazing dark coffee with a hint if some sweetness.

T: Spot on the nose, dark yet moderately sweet coffee.A tiny bit of roasted malts.

M: Silky smooth, medium body and carbonation.

O: Overall this is excellent. Lots of delicious silky smooth coffee. These guys never cease to amaze me.
