From 05/13/14 notes. 22 oz. bottle poured into a tulip.

a - Pours a deep mahogany brown color, almost black color, with one inch of dark tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Looks great.

s - Smells of rye, chocolate, roasted malts, spice, toasted malts, cocoa, and dark chocolate. Nice nose, the rye comes through and a lot of chocolate.

t - Tastes of dark chocolate, roasted malts, rye, spices, chalk, lightly bitter dark chocolate and hops, burnt malts, and toasted malts. Little bitter, but good.

m - Thick full body and low to moderate carbonation. Thick and chewy but no heat, great mouthfeel for a stout.

o - Overall a nice rye-chocolate stout. I didn't like it as much as their normal stout lineup of BORIS< BA BORIS< and DORIS, but it has a lot of chocolate to it and the rye comes through. Worth checking out if you like their stouts.

Another late night share by RussianDragon. Thanks Dave!

The beer is near black with a small beige collar. Sparse lacing. The aroma brings baker's chocolate, roast, ripe dark fruits, bread. The rye character is subtle, but does add a nice touch. Cocoa and dark roast. Big time Danish influence in this stout. Medium to full bodied with moderately low carbonation. A touch of bitterness and dry cocoa powder in the finish. A solid beer. I really enjoyed this.

Natasha pours coffee brown from the bottle but becomes blacker as it fills the glass. When finally full there's not a hint of light flashing through. The cocoa brown head rise to a finger and slowly falls to a thick cap completely coating the glass with lace on the way down. The foam has a nice velvety look and stays relevant thanks to the constant carbonation running up the glass.

What a unique nose. A light roast flashes off the bat but what's really unique here is the large amount of berries in the nose. There's also a good dose of baker's chocolate and when combined with the berries reminds me of truffles; raspberry and blueberry mostly. The rye adds a spicy, even floral note to the underlying stout. Pine driven happiness brings up the rear. I'm a fan of the uniqueness.

While the flavor has many of the same aspects as the nose it seems muddled and not near as bright. Again, the roast is light, the floral and spicy rye are more present in the flavor than nose. That comes along mid palate and glides through the finish. Berries I mentioned above flash through here and there. The pine happiness is big on the finish along with a little astringency. As this beer warms the pine tends to clash with the rye and berry notes.

The carbonation is on the heftier side of moderate with a tingly feel. It actually adds a unique frothiness. The body runs medium and finishes with a big hoppy bitterness that a dry finish accentuates. I like the bitter, I like the dry, I like the froth.

I'm a fan of some aspects and on the fence on others. The rye and floral characters I enjoy along with the bitterness, even though it could be toned down a notch. The large pine presence tends to clash at times but never in z totally off putting way. Would I buy this again? Probably not. I do enjoy it and glad I'm trying it though.
