Reviewed from (long-standing) notes. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Cycle Brewing snifter glass.
A: Very dark brown to black, with minimal visible carbonation. Forms a thin mocha-colored head that fades away quickly.
S: Big chocolate and roasted malts. A creamy sweetness mixes with rye malts and coffee. A little ethanol heat on the nose as well.
T: Bittersweet chocolate and dark roasted malts. Bitter coffee grounds, rye malts, and dark cacao. Hints of dark fruit (maybe prunes?) show up as the beer warms. The bitter, drying coffee ground flavor lasts into the hang with just a touch of cacao nibs. Some hop bitterness contributes an earthy flavor as well.
M: A nice thick mouthfeel, especially given the tame ABV listed. Alcohol presence is minimal. Fairly low carbonation sensation.
O: Not my favorite beer. The flavors came screaming through, but the rye didn't mix as well with the bitter chocolate and coffee grounds. Drinkable for sure, but not my favorite.

Black with brown edges and a dense, bubbly tan blanket on top
On the nose is medium roast acidic coffee, cola, smoked cedar, and a little roasted almond with peanut butter.
Taste is banana nut bread with chocolate chunks dipped in coffee. Yet it's tangy and almost reaches a spicy soy sauce peak, attributable possibly to some piney hops, but this is not quite a black IPA. A hint of brownie batter comes in as an aftertaste--I daresay that's not a bad thing at all.
Feel is medium of body with some tingly but expanding carbonation, finishing dry.
---
In March 2018 I'm having my last bottle, which is about 5 years old now, and the spicy soy sauce I mentioned above is completely gone. There's still a slight rye spiciness to it, but all and all, it's like a unique, woody take on BORIS.

Bottle pour June 2015. It's really weird, because it tastes like a black IPA, but for a Black IPA, it's not bad. Extreme hop character here.

Big rye and cocoa aroma, with some resiny hops.
Big resin flavor, accented by roasty malt and spicy rye notes. Nice chocolate finish. Interesting mix of flavor.

Good offering from Hoppin Frog. Pretty much agree with reviews stating this is a good beer but not on par with D.O.R.I.S or B.O.R.I.S. Good chocolate and rye flavor but nothing incredible. Worth a taste if you have the opportunity but not a must have.
