This is a fun beer all around. The comedic appearance suggests that the experience will be light-hearted, and it is. It smells good, it drinks smooth, and its aftertaste is appealing. The label itself teases that the beer drinker can be both serious about selecting this beer for the quality and yet enjoy a humorous evening with friends at the same time. Try it, see what you think.

Drank from a 1 pint 6 fl. oz. (22 fl. oz) bottle purchased at Craft Beer Cellar, Belmont, MA
Served in a pint glass

Even with a careful pour, large chunks of yeast particles sneaked into the hazy, orangey-amber liquid. The beer was topped by a frothy, sudsy, off-white crown. Streaks of drippy lacing cascaded along the glass.

The nose was super hoppy and fragrant yet balanced. Tropical fruit notes dominated. Mango, papaya and pineapple were most noticeable. Hints of passion fruit. Somewhat dank. Overall, really solid.

Like the aroma, the flavor profile was incredibly hoppy yet very well balanced. Candied orange peel came through strong. Good amount of tropical fruitiness. I definitely picked up some mango and papaya. The beer was well anchored by a stiff yet unobtrusive caramel malt base. The finish contained notes of bitter orange peel and a touch of grapefruit zest. Hints of pine came through as well. At 7.5% ABV, the alcohol was remarkably well masked.

The mouthfeel was soft and pillowy. Creamy, frothy and smooth with a very fine and mellow effervescence.

Many of Hoppin' Frogs beers are wildly overpriced but, at $8 a bomber, this was a real bargain. Gangster Frog is a super flavorful yet immensely drinkable IPA. I would love to see this brewery jump on the canning bandwagon and offer this in six-packs.
