500ml swing-top to boot. ABV on label listed as 4.9%. An assumed best by date of 3-13-15 on the back.

Appearance - Dark brown pour with orange highlights, off-white head. Good retention as a patchy cap and thick ring, bits of lace left.

Smell - Pretty straight-up salty salty ham, peppery glazed ham on Easter Sunday. Light smokiness, bready and grainy tones, honey and caramel sweetness.

Taste - Less intense on saltiness and ham but a little more of a smoky roasted feel. Pretty earthy, kinda woodsy leafy thing going on. Dark bread, grains, helles-like malts. Light molasses sweetness.

Mouthfeel - A bit on the watery side, could use a bit of oomph in the carbonation and body.

Overall - The label describes this as "subtly-smoked" and it succeeds there, a pretty decent rauchbier that doesn't overwhelm and delivers some solid ol' fashioned German lager flavors.

Brown in color with a fingernail around the rim. Aroma is of dark, smoked malt. I’m tasting lightly smoked malt, caramel, and toasted nuts. The mouth is crisp and refreshing.

From a swing-top bottle, this beer is a brownish, clear color with a think off-white head. The smell of fragrant wood smoke hits your nose as soon as you pop the bottle. It’s a mix between a campfire and a nice smoked piece of meat. I really enjoy the smell. The smoke, though, dominates the aroma, and it’s hard to get any other beer scent. The taste is balanced, if not just a little dry. If you try, you can get some malt flavors through the smoke. It ends with a nice spice note. Not acrid, not overdone, but very nice. I really enjoyed this one.

Appearance: Clear, saddle brown. Fluffy off white head with good retention.

Aroma: Moderate smokey aroma

Flavor & Aftertaste: Moderate smokey flavor, low bitterness. Moderate sweetness.

Mouth feel: Light to medium bodied, low carbonation, drying, medium length finish.

Overall: This is a more moderate smoked beer vs Schlenkerla. A better introduction to this style. A little lighter bodied but certainly not thin. It has a moderate sweetness that manifests as you drink it but a short dry finish. Low bitterness. Bitterness and smokey flavor does not linger too long past the finish. Schlenkerla is the benchmark for this style but I think this balances the smokey element better with the more common beer elements.

Very clean and true to style based on my limited experience with rauchbiers.

$5.79 for a 16oz ceramic flip top @ BlueGoat. 4.9% ABV, BBF 6/10/22 but my experience is that rauchbiers handle age pretty well.

Pours out to a sparkingly clear deep chestnut, forming a thick and sticky lightly yellow head with beautiful retention and a solid sheet of lace. Very nice looking brew. The nose is wonderful...rich smoke, but sitting on top of a grainy malt base. Cleanly fermented. No hop aroma. Medium bodied, medium carbonation, ~2.5 carbs. Tastes great, opening with smooth rich smoke, leading into a grainy malt body with a subtle grain sweetness, then a well balanced bitterness that ends up finishing semi-dry. Rich and full of flavor for a 4.9% ABV beer. No off-flavors.

Rauchbiers can be polarizing but I happen to love them and in the US it's hard to find many examples of the style so I end up brewing my own. I've had all of Schlenkerla's bottled lineup and this is comparable to their Marzen, not as big and chewy as the Urbock. Really nicely balanced beer here and a very good example of the style, however the $5.79 for one bottle is a bit of price gouging, IMO.

Clear, medium brown body; dense carbonation; thick, sculpted head, bone white color and long lasting. Nice light caramel malt nose, slightly sweet; a nice dose of beechwood smoke aroma. The taste reinforces the smell characteristics; moderate earthy caramel sweetness; medium-light presence of hardwood barbecue smoke flavor; maple; very light hop bitterness. Generally heavy mouthfeel; sweet and sticky; mild underlying dryness.

The brewery produced a nice, classic styled rauchbier. The smokiness is heavier than a lot of smoked beers but not as bold as, say, Heller Trum's 'Aecht Schlenkerla' beers. Well-rounded, very malty, with a nice touch of smokiness.

500ml bottle. Poured out a dark amber color with a small, khaki-colored head of foam. It left sudsy trails of lace on the glass. It smelled of smoked meats, toffee, coffee and malt. Nice smokey taste with roasted malt, toffee and caramel flavors.

Poured chestnut brown, actually brown, with an impressive lighter brown head that dissipated but never went away.
The aroma- most are difficult for my damaged nose to pick out much, but this smelled all the world like a barbecue. Never got that in a beer before, smoked meaty and soft malts playing well together.
The flavor follows a bit at first, smoky and almost but not meaty. I don’t have the vocabulary to describe it well, but it is really good!
The feel, well with carbonation throughout I felt it not smooth like it smelled but having just a little edge to keep it from going off the sweet end. Or barbecue end. Something. It worked for me.
OA, I have not had many smoked beers yet but if this is a good representation, I intend to try many more.

Great rauchbier. Modesty clear. Frothy, rich head. Aromas aren't overly potent but smells meaty and and bbq like. Taste is especially salty and meaty. Feel is on the lighter and thinner side (using schlenkerla marzen as the measuring stick). A slightly more crushable rauch than a schlenkerla but not quite as satisfying.

From the swing-cork topped bottle with no date shown anywhere. I sampled it on April 13, 2019.

How beautiful is that pour? Mahogany-amber with nice clarity and a long-lasting and lacing-leaving light tan head.

Wow! I have to give the aroma a 5 out of 5. The smoked caramel and toffee is like standing next to a bonfire on a mild spring night. And I can pick up a brown sugar sweetness that I expect would also show in the flavor. Low floral hop profile. But it's the smokiness that takes this to the top.

Light almost watery body. That was its biggest flaw in my opinion.

Because the taste is smoked forward and sweet and it really captures the character of the style. Mildly dry finish. i have to give this high marks because it deserves it. And I'm rating it entirely on style. Some people may not like this style but it happens to be one of my favorites.
