Pours a clear copper with a small, foamy head that dissipates quickly, leaving no lacing. Delivers a light, smokey scent with malty, sweet undertones. The taste is light and mostly malt with hints of honey and spice and just a touch of hoppy bitterness at the end. Leaves an after taste reminiscent of smoked ham.

All-in-all not a bad beer. Personally, when it comes to Rauchbiers, I say bring on the funk. The smokier the better.

Appearance: 1/2 inch head, clear, gold in color, high carbonation

Smell: smoked wood

Taste: tea, grass, leaves, smoke throughout

Mouthfeel: light bodied, slightly bitter, dry, high carbonation

Drinkability: This strikes me like a bit of a smoked English pale ale combined with some German ale characteristics. It is different from other rauchbiers I have had. Could have several. A very good brew.

50cl bottle. Pours clear yellow-copper with a huge, fluffy white head that won't die. Thick lacing when it finally does. Light smoked malt aroma with nice fruitiness. Grainy and earthy. Full, malty taste with some light smoked grain. Somewhat fruity and a bit sweet; hoppiness at the end combines with smoke to dry it out. Not the kind of beer you sit and search out all of the minute complexities of, even though they're definitely present. The kind of thing to drink and enjoy, and drink some more. Great rauchbier.

Produces a fist full of light tan head, clear and copper colored body. Awesome retention that lasts forever.

Smoke aroma is easily detectable, hickory and pepper blended into the mix.

Taste is of sweet molasses upfront, gut gets kicked to the side with peppery, meaty, and smoky goodness.

MF is medium in body, good and wetting to the palate with prickly sensation from the carbonation.

Very drinkable, moderate in ABV, and complex.

0.5l bottle, best by 19 Feb 2010 (a little late...). Pours a completely clear golden-orange color, creamy off-white head, decent lacing. Aroma is caramel malts, wheat, wood, slight smoke and bacon. Flavor is pale malts, a bit of caramel, fruity, and some smoke. Mouthfeel is light to medium with a dry finish. Decent beer, I tend to like this level of smoke, but it could use more smoke and more backbone.

50cl swing-top bottle best before 8th March 2012 poured into Spaten seidel.

A- Mahongany coloured body with excellent clarity. 3 finger creamy tan head that has very good retention and lacing.

S- Smoked ham, doughy breads remind me of pretzels. Id said its the smell of Bavaria!

T- Caramel and toffee malts balance with a toasted malt bitterness in the semi dry finish, touch of apple fruitiness in there. This is blanketed in a nice moderate layer of smoke. Finish is a bit thin and lacking in depth.

M- Low carbonation, medium body initially but once again finish tails off and lacking.

D- Looks and smells great. Has a nice level of smokiness and malt sweetness/bitterness levels. Let down by this thin finish. Overall, very drinkable though.

BB 01-02-07. Nice and good lasting head and a bronze golden beercollor. Nose is combination of smoked maltyness and citrussy hops that give it a fresh twist. Smoke very obvious also in taste that's nice and round and full of flavour. Moderate bitterness fitting the brew that's marzen like and shows bit of sweetness. Low carbonisation fitting the brew and overall very enjoying beer that's quiet Schenkerla like but bit smoother and rounder.

The beer pours a dark golden color with a thick frothy off-white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a light, pale and Munich malt scent along with a mild smoked character. The taste is decent as well. It has a light pale malt flavor with some moderately sweet Munich malt notes. The Rauch malt is quite assertive. It's a nice smokey flavor. It's too bad the rest of the malt bill is lacking. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a low/medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is an above average rauchbier, but nothing exceptional. It's easy drinking, but not too interesting.

500ml swing-top to boot. ABV on label listed as 4.9%. An assumed best by date of 3-13-15 on the back.

Appearance - Dark brown pour with orange highlights, off-white head. Good retention as a patchy cap and thick ring, bits of lace left.

Smell - Pretty straight-up salty salty ham, peppery glazed ham on Easter Sunday. Light smokiness, bready and grainy tones, honey and caramel sweetness.

Taste - Less intense on saltiness and ham but a little more of a smoky roasted feel. Pretty earthy, kinda woodsy leafy thing going on. Dark bread, grains, helles-like malts. Light molasses sweetness.

Mouthfeel - A bit on the watery side, could use a bit of oomph in the carbonation and body.

Overall - The label describes this as "subtly-smoked" and it succeeds there, a pretty decent rauchbier that doesn't overwhelm and delivers some solid ol' fashioned German lager flavors.

Pours a soapy, tan head that has good persistence and lacing. Rich, smokey flavor with notes of acidity. Radiant, clear burnt umber color. Starts with a surprisingly mild smokiness; acidity and carbonation dominate the first second. Builds in acidity slightly. Biscuity malt comes through, smoke on the top. Finish is light malt and smokiness.

This is pretty good. It's not nearly as aggressive and intense as it's Bamberg counterparts, but it's no slouch. I'd consider it to likely be a more accessible entrance into Rauchbier.

Sampling right now after bowling on 9/2/14. Comes in a single 500ml bottle for $3.99 that has a ceramic stopper. Contains 4.9% Alcohol and 'BEST BY" 13.03.15" date on the back label. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured into a handled glass stein.

This 'Rauchbier' (Smoked beer- type of beer with a distinctive smoke flavor imparted by using malted barley dried over an open flame) pours a very dark drown with ruby highlights, almost black in color actually with a thin beige head. Spotty lacing was seen when sipped. The aroma is very pleasant of German roasted malts, yeast with a light hint of smoke. The taste starts out a little salty (NOT overdone at all) with some dark bread with a light hint of smoke that wasn't over done at all. Very nice and goes down very easy. No harsh or bitter aftertaste at all. Perfect carbonation and medium-bodied. Never had this style of brew before and really liked it! Have to say I was very impressed! Prosit! :)

Pouring it slowly and there's still a lot of bubble activity, especially lots of popping and fizzing in the big frothy head. It settles nicely fast enough tho, leaving a nice one finger head and lots of traces on the mug. Pale amber.
Smells of bacon, rich and salty. Some sweetness and smoked wood also.
Taste: nice malts, like mildly smoked toasted biscuits, also sweet with a fruity component, some red apple, oranges. Spicy feel with prickly pepper. Smoked wood follows, again, mild. Quite a decent amount of hops present in the finish, herbal and bitter, nicely keeping the smoke in check.
Medium carbonation and body, crisp, surprisingly thirst quenching for a rauch.
Out of the box, nice, this rauchbier doesn't just rely on heavily smoked malts, but has tasty hops and a great Munich-style helles malt sweetness. Still, if you want that rough barbecue aftertaste, this isn't the right beer for you.

Aroma: Smoke. Alittle like a campfire, or maybe like smoked meat. Can't really get past the smoke to any other aromas, but still not the smokiest beer that I have ever smelled.

Looks: A nice light copper/golden colour. Good clarity. Nice thick white head that lasts. Some lace.

Taste: Good smoke flavour dominates without being over the top. Well balanced. A touch of malt sweetness with a bit of biscuityness, perhaps from the Munich malt. The finish has a good clean bitterness to it.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Carbonation is average.

Overall, a well rounded and balanced beer. Enough smoke to keep things interesting without over doing it.

Coming in a 500ml swing-top brown bottle, BB 28/08/08, consumed 3 months after the expiry date (...), served chilled in a straight pint glass.

A: pours a translucent bright amber hue, coming with very fine and constant carbonation and a semi-thick layer of cottony head that lasts really well.
S: dried smoked longan-fruits, dates, and kippers spring to mind, with a light salty-sweetness at the back along with a touch of leather-ish earthy odour.
T: the foretaste comes the lightest in flavour as compared with other rauchbier I've tried, with but a light smoked tinge as of dried longan-fruit shell, then the taste quietly sinks into a clean but surprisingly bitter aftertaste, a sign of very good level of hopping in the brew. Lightly spicy and herbal, with a delicate touch of smoked-wood-chips to add to the bitter finish.
M&D: due to the good level of bitterness and chewy-hop palate, on top of superb carbonation that makes the bier as soft as refreshing, I find this Rauchbier probably the most drinkable/quaffable amongst those I've ever tried! After trying three rauchbier recently, I really really long to fly to Bamberg in the near future to taste these smoked nectar on cask/tap!

.5L swing-top, best by the end of Feb. 2011.

Pours a hazy light amber with a small, but stable foamy head. Looks like a pale ale.

Aroma is interesting, with notes of smoke, ham, and tangy hops.

Flavor is odd. Kind of sweet and tangy, with a weird vegetal thing. The smokey note is nice and subtle, reminiscent of a smoked ham. Touch of diacetyl. There's a bit of strange fruitiness and ale flavors-- is this a top-fermented Rauchbier? Kind of tastes like it. The mouthfeel is woefully under-carbonated, but smooth, with decent weight.

This is a weird beer. Although I'm still within the best by date, I fear this bottle may be past its prime.
