Pours dark brown with a few winks of red. An inch or so of light tan foam.

Smells like roasted malt and a whiff of nuttiness. A bit of ... strange almost oxidized notes in the aroma.

Taste is roasted, nutty malt, but there's a strange metallic oxidized bite to it. It's weird. Kind of bracing, almost. Not a bad beer, but very straight-forward and simple.

Mouthfeel is a bit watery.

500 ml brown bottle with fancy gold foil around cap and neck. Pours out a deep deep brown, still a deep brown when held to light, but a garnet/cola sphere where the direct light concentrates and shines through.

Rich biscuity chocolate malt aroma, dry chocolate wafer, a bit of smoke, but it's all very consistent.

Biscuity chocolate wafer in the flavour as well up front, evolving into a more bitter dry grassy hop on the finish. A very "Point A to Point B" beer in flavour, but it works, simple yet gets the point across. Very mild all the way though, with a slightly smokey aftertaste. It kinda hums mid-tune, not bombastic, and not a wallflower, yet not baby bear's porridge either--still it holds its own.

Straight forward mouthfeel, middle of the road, not too watery, but far from full, actually closer to watery....

This is an okay beer, mild in abv% and it shows in the intensity (or lack thereof) of the flavour, and the lacsadasial tone of the mouthfeel. Still tasty and worth drinking, and would make a good fall/winter session beer, although I am personally bored after one.

Thanks to by brother John for bringing this back from Prague.

Aroma notes malty, yeasty, (phenol) and is mildly sweet and lightly roasted. The aroma does fade pretty quickly.
Dark brown with mahogany hues. One inch tan head that's persistent and shows a creamy quality. Nice lacing.
Nice complexity of flavors. Roast. Chocolate. A bit dry. Mildy sweet, but not excessive. Well balanced bittereness. Seems like a yeasty quality at times.
Rather thin. Almost watery. Fairly fully carbonated. Smooth. No bite. Good lager qualities.
Not sure why this isn't listed as a schwartzbier. It's labed as such on the bottle, it carries a fair amount of roast flavors that's not necessarily appropriated for a dunkel, and carries less of caramel.
Anyway, this is a good sample and an enjoyable beer.

A darkbrown beer with la small beige head.

A faint smell of roasted coffee, sweet dried fruits and burnt bread.

The sweet tones are dominating, dried plums and dates, some roasted notes, very short bitterness.

Rather creamy mouthfeell.

In all a bit bland, no specific highlights.

Wow. I had no idea when I ordered this beer today that it was so low in alcohol. I knew that black lagers weren't necessarily stronger than lighter lagers, but 3.8%? I really enjoyed this and now that I know I can have this for Breakfest (lol) I'm hooked. Great black color, very good malty test, very, very drinkable. A very difficult beer to sip slowly. I never had a german Schwarz as good as this. HIghly recommend.

Pours a brown with some red highlights when held to the light. Light cream colored foam head, no lacing.

Light coffee and cocoa aromas. Roasted malt, some sweetness.

Nice roasted malt up front. Clean roasted grain flavors, some light coffee and cocoa powder. A little grain sweetness, some brown bread. Light bitterness. Pretty smooth. Flavors a solid, but a little on the light/mild side.

Lighter bodied, a little thin. Good carbonation. Easy drinking at its best. Not the best of style, but pretty good.

Poured a dark brown which revels some garnet red hues when held up to the light. Decent head, decent retention. Nose is of generic fruits (sweet malts) with a certain musky quality. A curios set of flavors hits my tongue when I drink it, the malty sweetness is not as forward as I expected it to be, more like dried fruit. As it warms the flavor of caramel is revealed. Low carbonation and a light body (esp. for a beer this dark) help to give this brew a silky mouthfeel and makes it quite quaffable. Nothing exciting but still a good offering from the rarely heard from Czech Republic.

I have revisited this and found it to be a very good, light but subtly complex and characterful beer, a great session beer at 4.4% abv but with good character.

Very dark brown, essentially black but not quite, it has a medium-large tan head slowly shrinking to a wispy ring and leaving only weak hints of lace.

The aroma is roasty with hints of licorice, molasses cake, caramelised bread, chocolate, and prune. Its not strong but it's still full and very nice.

The taste is similar, dryish toasty overall with an engaging zesty-tingly licorice, mild very dark gingerbread, hints of prune, fermented fruit, chocolate. It has a finish of licorice, molasses gingerbread and hints of singed dry leaves and coffee bean. The molassesy gingerbread dominates the aftertaste and lingers. It has light bitterness in the finish. It's tasty and easily drinkable, clean and solid, light but characterful and engaging. The feel is lively.

Nice black body, although a little translucent, head is big and creamy, off white, and leaves a lot of lace.

Smell: Black pepper, roasted malts, light cocoa, grass. Smells quite nice.

Taste: Malty and slighty metallic, chocolate and malt. Very smooth and easy to drink, this is a good schwarzbier in body and flavor.

Drinkability: Much better than the imperial, a sessionable beer (low ABV and good flavor). If not for the price, it would be a regular.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of Aug 2013. Acquired recently from a B&M store for a rock-bottom price. The labelling has a classy Czech character....

Poured into a straight pint glass. A dark reddish-brown hue that appears black unless held to the light. Good carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy beige foam that lasts for a while before slowly reducing to a surface layer. Aroma of roasted malt with hints of brown sugar/mild molasses, grain, coffee, subtle chocolate and faint yeast. Slightly sweet, with a metallic twinge lurking in the background.

Tastes of dark malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of roasted grain, coffee, molasses, faint chocolate, a hint of liquorice, earthy yeast and stewed hops. Undertones of harsh cardboard and a weak metallic twang. Well attenuated, followed by a restrained bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and lightly tingly, with spritzy carbonation and decent body for the style. Mildly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of roasted malt, subtle bitterness and faint molasses.

Pretty good - uncomplicated yet it has a satisfying wholesomeness to it. Looks the part, while the aroma and flavour emphasise the roasted malt and faint sweetness that belong to this beer style. Some faint off-notes don't spoil it too much. Decent body. Not mind-blowing but very drinkable. At the price I paid for it I could see myself grabbing some more - worth sampling if you come across it.

Black color with ruby highlights producing a one finger thick head with good retention and leaving laces.
Faint, but nice predominant aroma of creamy chocolate and grains.
Flavor of spices, creamy chocolate, roasted malt, cola, licorice, minerals and finishing with earthy and herbal hop bitterness. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Light to medium body with good carbonation.
Smooth Black Lager and very easy to drink, not cloying at all. Decent not awesome. I bet this 4.4% abv version is better than the lower abv one.

My first schwarzbier. My sister brought this one back from the Czech Republic. Poured a deep, dark brown color with a good size tan head. Head faced slowly to a covering of the glass. Good lacing. Aroma fairly faint, mostly malt. Taste is good, very smooth, mild burnt malt taste. Mouthfeel was a bit thin, but that is probably appropriate for this style. Drinkability is good. I had a 500 ml bottle with some pizza, but I could easily see this as a good session beer. Tastes good, goes down smooth and the ABV is fairly low. Would love to try this one on tap. Nothing I would seek out, however I would enjoy it if available at a bar.

bottled 2/28/09

pours a deep dark brown with little head and no lacing

smells sweet and smokey

taste is kinda fruity for a lager and somehow i pickup smoked meat??? must be the malts but its different which sets it apart

mouthfeel/drinkability is so so - light to medium body with not enough carbonation for my liking

overall i prefer this brewers czech pils but this is a cheap schwarzbier if you are in the mood

Poured a nice deep black with a long lasting thick creamy head.

Smell has light malts notes, but is dominated by a musty funkiness that I don't particulary care for.

Light malty flavor with hints of cola and coffee. Just a bit of bittering in the finish, but overall malt dominated.

Mouthfeel is light and thin.

Overall easy enough to drink, but not at all great.

500ml bottle bought from Sainsbury's...

Poured a dark mahogany red colour. Creamy tan head poured tight and thick then faded quite quickly to nice light layer... some light lacing...

Aroma - Lightly roasted biscuity malts, light liquorice notes, chocolate, some dark vinous fruits (blackcurrents, raisins, figs), light smokey notes, nutty sweetness, light toffee / treacle notes, cardboard hints, some peppery hops, some saltiness...

Taste – Pretty watery tart fruits (black grapes, blackcurrents, light figs), light chocolaty malts, spicy / peppery hops, quite salty, some light medicinal notes, some breadiness, earthy, very little sweetness - maybe some light treacle / dark brown sugar notes, faint anise, some sourness...

Feel - Quite sharp and dry... Light bodied... a very sessionable brew at only 3.8%...

Overall - An OK beer... very very drinkable but just a bit dull for my liking...

Milky smell arises as soon as I popped the cap. Along with a roasted malt type charred smell. Dark brown body with a tan two tone head.

Chocolate pudding comes to mind initially. That didn't last long though as a charred slightly smoked dominance takes over. Personally I wouldn't session this but the low abv makes it reasonable and its interesting enough.

Notes: A light bodied dark brew. Undetectable hops but enough bitterness from the char to keep it somewhat in check. Not one I'll seek out.
