Poured from a .5L bottle purchased in Budapest... so absolutely nothing is decipherable other than a freshness date that I am pleased to see is rather far in the future.

I like schwarzbiers, from my experience with them, and am looking forward to this. This "royal" beer pours a deepy amber brown, more opaque by the width of the section of the glass you are looking through. The head took some coaxing, ultimately getting up to a few pinkies width of rocky, cloudy tan bubbles, displaying little retention other than a pockmarked film. Some bits of lacing.

Sweet chocolate wafer on the nose, I was surprised by the bitterness to the taste, though a certain hop crispness is noticeable at the tailend of the aroma.

Well carbonated, the taste is of processed grains with a combination of milk chocolate and a tad of coffee. Light dusting of dark chocolate left on the palate, reflecting the building of a hop taste throughout the drinking experience. Very crisp with carbonation, the grain hop bitterness becomes more noticeable as the the carbonation subsides.

Very well balanced, and pretty tasty, though I feel like it could be more substantive in flavor.

500 ml brown bottle with fancy gold foil around cap and neck. Pours out a deep deep brown, still a deep brown when held to light, but a garnet/cola sphere where the direct light concentrates and shines through.

Rich biscuity chocolate malt aroma, dry chocolate wafer, a bit of smoke, but it's all very consistent.

Biscuity chocolate wafer in the flavour as well up front, evolving into a more bitter dry grassy hop on the finish. A very "Point A to Point B" beer in flavour, but it works, simple yet gets the point across. Very mild all the way though, with a slightly smokey aftertaste. It kinda hums mid-tune, not bombastic, and not a wallflower, yet not baby bear's porridge either--still it holds its own.

Straight forward mouthfeel, middle of the road, not too watery, but far from full, actually closer to watery....

This is an okay beer, mild in abv% and it shows in the intensity (or lack thereof) of the flavour, and the lacsadasial tone of the mouthfeel. Still tasty and worth drinking, and would make a good fall/winter session beer, although I am personally bored after one.

Born on Date June 2007; Sampled August 2008
Pours into my 25cl tulip glass with a frothy, initially almost three-finger thick, tan colored head. The beer is dark, almost black color that has some caramel tinges to it. When held up to the light the body shows a brilliantly clear, deep red color. The aroma smells of toffee, ample toasted malt, light roast notes, a whole grain cracker note and a touch of sweet grain around the edges that almost has a cherry like fruitiness to it at times.

The carbonation adds a bit of fizziness to the texture and the body is light enough, but does have a medium heft to it. Caramelized notes provide just a touch of sweetness, but not nearly as much as I was expecting after reading that this had artificial sweetener added to it. Toasted whole grain flavors, a touch of cocoa powder, a hint of burnt smokiness, some blackened malt notes and a touch of roast coffee like flavors. The finish has some caramel, almost toffee notes that linger a bit on the tongue as well as a hint of hop bitterness that is quite smooth.

The overall impression of this beer is quite smooth and easy drinking; the dark grain used does not add any of the harsh, sharp or bitter notes that can often be found in darker beers. In this case a little more dark grain presence might provide a bit more complexity & balance, but this is certainly a classic example of a Schwarzbier.

Poured a dark brown which revels some garnet red hues when held up to the light. Decent head, decent retention. Nose is of generic fruits (sweet malts) with a certain musky quality. A curios set of flavors hits my tongue when I drink it, the malty sweetness is not as forward as I expected it to be, more like dried fruit. As it warms the flavor of caramel is revealed. Low carbonation and a light body (esp. for a beer this dark) help to give this brew a silky mouthfeel and makes it quite quaffable. Nothing exciting but still a good offering from the rarely heard from Czech Republic.

Appearance
Pours out a dark cola brown with a small head that has no lasting power nor leaves any lacing

Smell
Some chocolate, cookie malts, slight smokiness

Taste & Mouthfeel
Sweet and bacony, though overall a weak flavor; thin body with good carbonation; some artificial sweetness; no real aftertaste

Overall
I was pretty underwhelmed by this, although I recall enjoying the tap version much more.

Pours a cola-like dark with tan bubbly head that sticks to the glass with little gobs of lace.

Smells of musk and hops. Not as malty as I'd expect. Hops up front with a bit of brown sugar.

Taste is mild and nice. Bits of caramel and hops.

Mouthfeel is quite thin and a bit bitter.

Drinkability is fine but I wouldn't go searching for this one unless you hadn't tried many schwarzbiers.

Born on date 11-15-07.
Poured deep brown with a big tan head and lacing left behind.
Chocolate, roastiness and some actual medicinal notes in the aroma.
Taste was very sweet, black licorice and figs on the palate. Strange lingering finish. Once again remindiing me of medicine.
I will not buy again, just not my fancy.

A: Pours a dark ruby red color with a thin creamy tan head.

S: Fruity aroma bursting with fresh cherries, and plums.

T: Flavor is dried fruit, cherries, raisins and plums with some good bread notes. Beer ends with a good nutty chocoalate finish with just a slight smoky touch. Easy to drink with low carbonation, a smooth palate that flows from starts to finish.

M: Low carbonation and silky mouthful.

D: A decent example from the chech. Republic.

Pours a deep and dark reddish amber with a tall three fingers of tan head that retains well while leaving behind small chunks of lacing. The nose is caramel malts and some faint burnt bitterness. This is delightfully nutty and subtly sweet with notes of brown sugars and a burntness that tastes surprisingly clean(no grittiness)or texture to speak of.Light bodied, with a lot less flavor on the tail than I expected, some nice flavor upfront but the end kind of falls off to a watery average finish. Not somthing to seek out,tho I could drink this again and enjoy.

pours a negro color with a decent brown tinted head. decent lacing. nose is liquorice, coffee, dark and roasted malts. taste is same as nose but add a metallic bite (which is not too uncommon with schwarzbiers) and add a sweet something. guessing its the artificial sweetener they added. i love Sweet 'N' Low! medium bodied, medium carbo, dry finish. decent black lager

Served cold in a 21 oz pilsner glass from a 1/2 liter brown bottle.

Pours with little body dark brown and crystal clear with a fluffy off-white head.

Aroma is very toasty and slightly sweet.

Tastes toasty, grainy, a bit malty. But no sweetness, with a funny flavor that I can't place, almost like a soft drink fruitiness.

Body is thin, mouthfeel is dominated by seltzer-like fizz.

Not a hint of roastiness or caramel. Definitely a dunkel and not a schwarzbier, as Czech dark beers usually are. Good lawnmower beer if you're looking for something fizzy but not yellow.

1 Pt. 9oz bottle into Pilaarbijter pilsner glass

A - Settled into a two-finger, maltish-looking head which dissipated within minutes leaving just a film; dark cherry looking brew, when held up to light, otherwise opaque

S - Seemed to be a heavy hop smell when first poured, but then nothing... The smell somewhat disappeared, a bit of caramel once it warmed a bit

T-M - Thin, malty nose, watery, hops, a touch of wood in the finish.

D - Decent brew, though a bit watered down for my taste

Cola coloured, nearly blocks all light, and a big tan head was generated. Some retention, the head doesn't dissappear in a hurry. Spotty lacing.

Darker malt aroma, though is still a bit grainy. Nothing too exciting to the nose.

Light body, with a cola like caramel flavour. Leans towards sweetness, with little to balance it in the back end. Flashes of citrus in the middle. Light to medium carbonation makes this a breeze to quaff. A little bit of lingering metallic flavour is the final impression.

A definite easy drinker. Won't stand out in a crowd though.

Pours dark with a good head that didnt stay around long vert little lacing. Smell is not very powerful but pleasant. Has a carmel and coffee aroma. Taste was very mild and had a watered down feel with light carbonation. Roasted coffee and malt flavors were good, I just wish a bit stronger. I think this is a good beer but it is one you need to be in the mood for.

half liter on tap poured into a mug at romer plaza in frankfurt am main, germany. pours black with garnet highlights and a single finger of light brown head that remains for a few minutes.

aroma is of roasted malts, with notes of caramel and chocolate and a distant note of coffee as well.

taste is mild and roasted, with the same malt notes as the aroma and a bit more character and richness than the aroma would suggest.

mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a silky texture and a smooth finish of lingering roasted malts.

drinkability is great. a tight profile and solid complexity make this one an excellent schwarzbier. prost!

This beer pours a dark brown, nearly black color. The head is two inches in height, and recedes slowly into nice lacing. The aroma is of roasted and chocolate malts, with a faint spiciness. The taste is like the aroma, and very flavorful. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a velvety texture, and moderate carbonation. Overall, this is a nice schwarbier. I will certainly drink this again.

A:Dark brown (almost black) color. There is an average sized off-white head on top.
S:The smell is very nice. There is some burnt caramel smell to it along with a malty aroma. Also there is a little bit of tartness and raisin in the smell, too.
T:The taste is a little watered down tasting. There is some roasted malts in the middle of the palete but without any of the harshness. A little bit of caramel flavor is in it. Also there is a flavor that I think might be the artifical sweetner, but it does taste a little odd.
MF:The beer is very light on the palate but the low amount of carbonation gives it somewhat of a smooth feeling.
D:Did find it weird that one the back of the bottle it says there is artificial sweetner. I've heard of people talk about using it before but never tried any beers with it in it. Overall it's an okay beer, but the flavor isn't great so I wouldn't drink to many of these.

Beer #43 in my 366 Days of Beer Quest, tasted on 2/12. Found this at Chips Wine & Beer in Richmond, VA.

A: Pours a dark garnet body into a tulip glass. A khaki head of 2" forms, retention is decent. Not much lacing.

S: Nothing extraordinary, but the aroma is nice & appetizing. Dark crystal malts give off notes of brown sugar, raisin, cereal grains & a definite tart black cherry character.

M: Light, firm body, med. carbonation. Very light but smooth.

T: This is okay, just decent for a dunkel. I was expecting much more malt depth & more roast-focused flavor. Bready, fruity malts are somewhat tasty but too thin, seems diluted a bit. Brown sugar, raisin & plum notes are there but muted. Very soft chocolate notes. Hops are nearly non-existent as expected, w/ just a whiff of leafy bitterness.

D: Just a decent dunkel lager. While very easy to session, it's thin w/ not a lot going for it. Nice w/ some smoky sausage but this is one I won't come back to. Nice fruit malt flavors have potential, but aren't realized.

Pours blackish with a thin head that stays around.

The smell is of a charred, roasty dark maltiness with some floral notes in the background.

The taste is of dark maltiness and baker's chocolate. It has a mildly roasted character. An earthy, grassy bitterness balances out most of sweetness. Finishes a tad thin with a carbonated push.

It has a mediocre thinness about it. Not too thrilling, but enough to it to make it drinkable. It's like a schwartzbier meet a Euro Dark Lager.

Picked this up at the local HyVee. We have a large European population thus a large selection of these beers: Czech, Polish, etc.

This beer pours nice dark yet clear looking. Nice head and lace. Slightly tan head. The nose is not much. Taste is like "stout lite" A tad sweet with roasted malt and a little bit sour finish. This beer is easy to drink but quite forgetable.

1 pint .9 fl oz. bottle with a black and gold colored label that has the name of the beer in a red and gold rectangle. This rectangle has a gold crown on the top of it and it's surrounded by 4 gold coins. The whole front is written in Czech, so good luck with that. The back label is written in English and that contains the US Government warning, US importer, refund values, barcode, and a born on date of 8/15/2006. The back label also lists the ingredients. The ingredients are as follows: water, malt, hops, and artificial sweetner. Wait one moment! Did I just say that this beer contains artificial sweetner? I sure did! I can't think of one good reason on why this has artificial sweetner in it. What? Is real sweetner not good enough for the consumer? If that isn't enough, they label this as a "Flavoured Imported Dark Beer." Not only does this beer contain artificial sweetner, but this is an imported dark beer flavored beer.

Appearance: When poured into a Pilsner glass, this flavored dark beer is a dark mahagony brown with a massive 4 inch creamy head of tan foam. It seemed like forever for the head of foam to recede to a point where I could drink the sweet liquid behind it. When it did recede, it left behind a tan colored film and tons of tan colored lace in its tracks.

Smell: The main aroma of this beer had to be the malted cereal. It smelled exactly like cold cheap cereal. The kind of cheap bagged cereal that you get on the bottom shelf of the cereal aisle. Once I got pass the cheap cereal aroma, I only got 2 more aromas after that, a hint a roasted coffee beans and a small trace of milk chocolate. Maybe I should have said 3 aromas because sometimes I got an aroma of burnt wood. Well, whatever it was, it was clearly a somekind of burnt aroma.

Taste: It had a light and somewhat watery taste of malted cereal, roasted mals, milk chocolate, sweet caramel, and a pinch of artificial sweetner. I knew the sweetner was coming into the play soon. Wow! Everything they listed under the ingredients was there, even the water and sweenter. It's a good thing they listed the ingredients because I would have wondered why I was tasting water and sweetner. Thanks Krušovice!

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel was light, watery, and thin. Not only was there that, but it also contained a short lived aftertaste of sweet malted grains and a dab of milk chocolate.

Drinkability: I wouldn't have thought that a beer made with artificial sweetner would taste that good and this beer proved me right. The only thing I can say about this beer is that it's different. Not a good different, but it still was different.

Czech this out... Okay, I'm serious now.

From a half liter bottle, this beer pours easy with a vigorous rush. The head is ample, and is a dark and milky tan. It sticks around for a good while too. The body is very dark and has a visible dark ruby tint to it.

This has a leathery chocolate kind of smell. There is a hint of a burnt aroma. I detect a copperish aroma as well.

The taste is almost malty at first, but balances well with the hops side. Mostly this is sweet and feels kind of wet.

Bottom line is that this is a decent brew. A little bit more complex than a pilsner.

Milky smell arises as soon as I popped the cap. Along with a roasted malt type charred smell. Dark brown body with a tan two tone head.

Chocolate pudding comes to mind initially. That didn't last long though as a charred slightly smoked dominance takes over. Personally I wouldn't session this but the low abv makes it reasonable and its interesting enough.

Notes: A light bodied dark brew. Undetectable hops but enough bitterness from the char to keep it somewhat in check. Not one I'll seek out.

Pours a very dark but clear ruby brown with a small tan head that falls quickly. Nose is not very strong, but carries malt scents and a slight robust quality to it. Flavor is interesting. Slightly smoked on the end. Things start off with a nice malty flavor and move on a bit of a tour to that slight smoky and roasted avenue. Feel is fairly bodied as far as the liquid feel goes. No real big attack of bubble on the tongue. Drinkable, yes. A pretty damn good beer actually. Worth trying, and could easily be a session brew considering the quality AND the price.

I poured this hard to look up beer into my tumbler at 50 degrees. The beer was almost black and had a nice tan head that went away pretty fast. I could not really smell this beer. It was kinda bland to me. Actually he taste was the same...kinda bland. It was not a bad beer but it was nothing that really jumped me either. It was kinda like a watered down porter best I can describ it. I think I will not buy again.
