12 ounce bottle, date of 30 Dec 2012 printed on it, I assume that's the best by date. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a clear straw gold color with about an inch white head. Head retention is good, and there's a lot of lacing left on the glass. Aroma is mostly sweet and grainy malt, along with a bit of skunk. Unfortunately it's a little worse tasting than it smells. It tastes mostly like skunky, grainy malt. I've tasted worse, but I can't say this is exactly appealing, and it gets worse the longer I drink it. Mouthfeel/body is light, it's a bit slick with moderate carbonation. It's worth trying just for the tick, but I wouldn't buy a sixer of this. Just stick with one bottle like I did. $1.59 a single.

Review: Bottle of Imperial Pale Lager, 4.60%ABV An interesting lager from Costa Rica, Imperial, a very pleasant refreshing light lager. Appearance was a crystal clear, pale golden straw colour, what a normal looking lager should look like. When pouring a small frothy white appeared that dissipated relatively fast with some lacing remaining. Sweet aroma of lightly toasted malt with corn. Smell was great, very enticing. Similar to the smell, there is a slightly bitter grassy flavour of a creamy aftertaste of dry corn sweetness, that leaves a dry feeling in the mouth Overall, Imperial Beer is a standard, good lager.

Bottle into Pilsner glass

A -Pours a clear golden straw color that has a frothy head. Head is slightly creamier than most light lagers that I have seen. Head dissipates somewhat slowly at first but picks up the pace as time goes on. Seems to be somewhat lightly carbonated. 3.5/5

S - Mostly a base malt aroma with a hint of hops at the end. Corn. There is an undertone of rice. Very little hop aroma. There is something else to the aroma that I can't quite place… Possibly somewhat skunked… Hint of yeast. 2.5/5

T - Malt and grain centered, but very lightly flavored. Light bitterness from the hops on the back end. Hops are somewhat floral. Hint of corn. Maybe a bit of white bread. Not a whole lot going on here. 2.5/5

M - Very light and dry. Hard to tell that there was anything in my mouth once it's been swallowed. Some carbonation but not a lot. 3/5

O - Very light tasting, light feeling beer. Can't say that I will ever buy this again in the US considering all of the other, cheaper light beers available. Hard to pay $10 for 6 when it's comparable in enjoyment to Miller Lite, etc. Happy to have had the chance to try it though. 2.75/5

Yellow fizzy beer. Of course, if you're in Costa Rica and it's 90 degrees in the shade, ANYTHING below room temperature tastes pretty good.

Not any worse - or better - than other tropical beers. Cool logo, though.

A: Pours a pale/golden yellow. Vigorous carbonation. Head vanishes almost instantly. Thin cap of white foam.

S: Metallic, grainy. Mild neutered hop aroma.

T: Metallica up front. Some grainy notes. Adjunct like without the flagrant corn flakes. Aftertaste just drops off. Very clean. Crisp. Dry. No lingering flavor except for a slight metallic hint.

M: Bright, carbonated, light.

O: Pretty much what you would expect. Goes down easily enough. Doesn't absolutely smack of corn, so it has that going for it. Still, subpar at best.

Brown bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a light straw color, nothing extraordinary.

Smell is nothing to write home about, neither good nor bad.

Taste is light, and I consider it to be quite refreshing. I'd easily reach for this over some more readily available beers.

Very thin, watery mouthfeel. Just a slight bite of carbonation, which makes for a very drinkable beer. After a few heartier, tastier beers, this one is ace to help you keep going in a session.

12 ounce bottle. Pours the expected light, clear yellowy amber. Minimal near white head, zip retention and very minor bits of lace sliding down the sides of the glass. perhaps a hint of powdered sugar in the nose. Light fairly taste less beverage. A hint of dryness in the finish. Lawn mower beer. On a very hot day, at the beach, by the pool, this would be enjoyable with a burger. Otherwise pass it by

God damn it, the last beer I reviewed was a heavenly German 'sner, and I've followed it up with this mesoamerican crap! Still, it's always fun to have a beer from a new country, and the label is undeniably cool (although if you didn't know better, you might think the black eagle and the red and yellow background might refer to Germany (or Belgium at a stretch).

As for the beer: Pours crap, head doesn't stay around, just another dark yellow macro. Smell, while unpleasant, is intriguing - I'm not sure if I'm smelling bubble gum or some other kind of chewy candy. Well, it's not beer in any case.

How does it taste: bordering on unforgivable. Tourists in Costa Rica probably love it because it reminds them they're on holiday; beer connoisseurs in Costa Rica are drinking it, pretending it's one of the microbrewed delights of Boston, Munich, Plzen or some abbey somewhere.

Why am I bothering to review this beer? It tastes like lollies, not like beer, even though it kinda looks like beer... Well, I'd drink it if it were free, and there were nothing else, but only then.

I'm a fan of the label only.

Thanks to swalden28 for sharing this beer. This is the first Costa Rican beer I have tried.

The beer pours a clear, macro yellow with a white head. The aroma is sweet malt and corn. The flavor is more of the same, adjunct tasting with a lot of sweetness and basically no hop bitterness. Light mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

More substantial than most Mexican beers. I guess the Costa Ricans wanted more, but not much more. Clear yellow with a white head. Still corny and sugary, but actually has a grassy hop-like flavor. Crisper than most, but still can't chake the candy corn taste.

Pale yellow, very clear with steams of fine bubbles rising quickly to the top. A bright white head of tightly bubbled foam sizzles down to nothing. Aroma of honey malt, some floral notes, grainy.

Flavors of biscuity malt, some floral hops, mild bitterness, subtle corn and buttery notes. Very smooth and even flavors, well balanced. Doesn't have that acrid aftertaste that so many adjunct lagers seem to have. Somewhat thin mouthfeel, but full enough. Overall not a bad beer, totally drinkable. One of the better adjunct lagers I've had.

Yellow macro lager, very thin white head, less than 1/4" I'd say, nothing to look at by any means. Aroma was cooked corny, a little bit of sweetness, not terrible by any means.

Taste, bland watery, lightly sweet, nothing in terms of hops, fizzy, highly carbonated. Total hot weather beer, nothing going for it otherwise really, had worse, had much much better.

The "standard" in Costa Rica...straw color, touch of a sweet smell (not corn -- to me). The head has that detergent adjunct look, lasts for seconds. Seems "spot-on" as an American-style Lager, initial sweetness followed by a predictable sweep of minute hop crispness. Doesn't have quite the unsettling aftertaste of a Miller High Life. Not much here to review, a summertime beer from an interesting place. Just not up to being called "good" by me. Thanks to my buddy Dave Szy. for bringin' back a can.

The label looks oustanding the cap looks like some sort of craft beer I would have never guessed this was a Costa Rican swill beer. Pale fizzy apple juice like appearance with a large high carbonated white head, dwindling slowly. Aroma is of "farts and burnt rubber", seriously it kind of stinks and it has a crazy unpleasant chemical smell about it. Hidden within the embalming fluid like smell are some cooked veggies and grain accented notes coming through. Flavor is actually quite pleasant especially for a mass produced Costa Rican adjunct lager, full bodied sweetness, corn, rice additions are ample. Nothing cloying finishes semi balanced with a generic chemical/hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with enough flavor and refreshing qualities to create an enjoyable experience. Overall other than the chemical band aid like smell this isn't horrible beer it has character and I could definitely drink it on the beach.

12 oz bottle served in pint glass. Fresh, according to date on label.

A - clear and golden; lmedium/light carbonation; thin and short-lived white head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring.

Light aroma and flavor, but more like a standard macro-brewery lager than a light beer. Body closer to medium. Flavor of grains and light hops.

Should be a refreshing summer drink, but not a recommendable beer.
