22oz bottle poured into a snifter
2013 Vintage
Lime Green Wax
A- pours deep black in color with a half finger creamy khaki head that has good retention and leaves a bit of lacing behind
S- smoky charred malt mixes with notes of anise, dark chocolate, prunes, raisins & a hint of toffee. Undertones of peppery rye, wet oak, barrel juice
T- roasted and charred malt up front give notes of dark chocolate, anise and black licorice. Mid-palate gives a big umami note, along with dark fruit notes of booze soaked figs and raisins and dark cherries. The finish brings out the barrel, adding some peppery rye, barrel juice and a hint of caramel. More char on the linger
M- medium body with moderate-low carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into a silky and velvety finish
O- at almost 10 years old, this is a well balanced and structured beer, very good

2014 edition
Tar black body crowned with a thick and sticky tan head; sheets of foam coat the inside of the glass. Very little aroma; what's there seems like dry wood and very faint chocolate. The taste exudes notes of milk chocolate and cocoa interspersed with a bit of whiskey; rye whiskey taste grows late into each sip; a bit of spice character. Heavy body; thick and chewy; dense softness; boozy warmth accentuated the bold residual sugar velvety mouthfeel.
At six years of age, the aroma has pretty well played itself out, but the look, taste, and mouthfeel are world-class.

Dark brown/black oily appearance, very little head, sparse lacing. Big whiskey notes, fudge, vanilla, licorice, faint and pleasant sweetness. Thick body, smooth mouthfeel.

A: Poured into a snifter to a black beer topped by half a finger of dense and rocky light tan head which fades slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of light woodspice, chocolate, coffee, oak, and roasted malts with a hint of vanilla and caramel.
T: Taste is somewhat spicy from the rye barrels up front with some cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and coffee come in as well with a touch of vanilla and hint of caramel along with the oak. On the swallow this beer is more spice, charred wood, roasted malts, coffee, and bitter dark chocolate with some lingering oak.
M: This beer has a body that is on the heavier side of medium with a slightly silky feel on the palate. Carbonation is about where it should be for the style and may be just a touch too effervescent. This beer has a drying finish which is expected and well executed.
O: Overall this beer is great. It has some really nice flavors and complexity. The rye barrels add a nice twist due to the extra spicy notes that they added over a standard bourbon barrel. This one is definitely worth a try if it comes back.

Dark brown color with tan head. Aroma is spicy with whiskey and some sweet honey notes. Taste leans towards the sweet side with dried dates, caramel and just a light roasty bitterness on the finish.

This beer pours dark into the glass with a dark brown head that dissipates quickly. It smells of whiskey and tastes similarly, the sweet notes of the High West Rye flowing alongside the faint notes of honey that are advertised. This creamy beer packs a bit of a punch and is quite tasty.
