On tap at HAF, multiple tastings.

Dark brown, nearly opaque clear body, some carbonation rising, one finger light brown head, quick dissipation with minimal lacing. Big frickin' nose, dark stone fruit, raisins, currants, figs. Taste mirrors thenose, minimal hops, fairly complex. Mouthfeel a bit thin, not much effervescence, dry finish. Drinkability OK in small doses.

Wow this is a damn good beer. Much thanks to D0b for sending me this one as an extra. Served chilled, and poured into a nonic pint glass, this twenty two ounce bomber was consumed on 01/12/2009.

First off, bonus points for the fantastic looking bottle with the red waxed cap. Poured a deep, dark black, with no light shining through this monster at all. A huge tan head of three inches in height came up over the top and settled down nicely into a thin film maybe an inch high that lasted throughout the rest of the session. Very big looking beer I have to say.

The aroma was wonderful. Tart cherries and prunes, hints of dates and a luscious almost raspeberry note to it. Very much alive with a sour funk note and lots of hoppiness. The flavor defies style. As it starts with delicate, soft plums and grapes, hints of cherries and blackberries them coming forward giving that tart flavor a wonderful foot forward. Exceptional depth here as each flavor was better then the one before and each sip seemed to get more and more complex. I can just see the fruits in my mind as I sip on this one,The texture was nice, though a little fuller would have made this one wonderful. I was really impressed as the alcohol was soo well hidden that by the end of the session I was really feeling this one,

Overall I loved this beer. I was expecting something heavy and sweet but instead a subtle fruity belgian beer is waht greeted me. Not sure what style I would call this one, but it its damn good, and I would love to have another.

As compared to Separate Good? Sampled a dark amber to ruby brown color with a soft white head that took a while to dissipate. A bit murky overall. Good retention, even after it calmed down and good lacing.

The nose is funky in a way. A lot of different things going on and leave a bit muddled aroma. Some minor malt notes with a light bready and kettle caramel aromas. There is a light butyric/dirty drain aroma that is off setting and just leaves an odd finish. Some yeasty funk in there as well with hints of brett and mineral notes. There is a spice note that comes out as well, but really doesn't blend well. More of a ginger meats paprika spice aroma. Not much for raisins but there is a light wood aroma that leaves a stale/musty thing in the finish. Overall just odd.

The taste is similar but some of the odd notes back off. The malt comes out more with a good caramel and Belgian like characters. Some bready with a light astringent note on the back end. The wood flavor comes out a bit more with some vanilla notes but does note blend well with the spice. Hard to pick out the specific spice, but to me it's a mix of paprika and ginger with a hint of cloves. Weird. The yeast comes out a bit more with some ester notes. Some rose and plums with a light pineapple taste. Some funk/dirty drains on the back end but not as noticeable as the nose.

The body is moderate with some warming effects. The carbonation is high but ok for style. Some funk but not exactly brett, IMO. Overall this one just has a lot of things going on. Would have liked to see some of the spiced notes back off or eliminated altogether but maybe it will age better.

Very similar to Flossmoor's version, name and all. Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. The nose has rich malts, peppery yeasts, raisins and a pleather of herbs and spices. Taste is a bit unbalanced by the huge spice presence. Medium body was a bit syrupy and under carbonated. Not quite as good as the original.

I had this one on tap.

Poured a dark brown color with red edges and a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of raisins, chocolate, and some roastiness. Tastes of dark fruits, citrus, and spices. Some alcohol in the finish, but overall well hidden. This one was just a little different.
