-dark gold in color with a very white head. not heavy lacing nor head retention, but good enough to not lose many marks here

-boom! right away, a nice hops blast. grassy and some faint sweetness. at the very last sip of my second glass from the growler there was still a strong hops nose to it

-awesome. grassy, and a bit piney on the hop flavor. the spiciness from the rye melts in after that. good and bitter, but still balanced well throughout

-nice and crisp. not too oily or dry. carbonated well without any unwanted bite

-fantastic IPA. the 3 hop aspects were incredible throughout. will never go to tahoe without filling my growler with this beer

On tap at The Bistro IPA Festival

A - Poured copper with a 2 fingered orange-white head. Apparently nobody told the beer to dissipate and it left beautiful lacing. Looks danged tasty!

S/T - Rye, honey-malt sweetness, citrus hops, and bittering hops as well.

M - Moderate-Full bodied, with a slight hop domination. Finished very smooth and none to dry.

D - Great overall. My pick for the winner of this event.

Served on tap at City Beer Store in SF,CA.
Pours a hazy orange with noticible carbonation, a fat head and very nice lace.
Smells like awesome. Spicy rye, citrus (grapefruit), earth and a bit of sweet near the end.
The taste is much like the smell, spicy rye, bitter citrus and fresh soil.
The mouth tops this by a bit. So easy going down I could get drunk without trying.
Love the beer, wish it came in bottles.

I had this on tap and fresh from a growler on my recent Tahoe trip. This review is from the growler I picked up. It comes in at 6.5% and 75 IBUs.

A-Pours a hazy yellow-brown with a nice half finger white head. It leaves a huge amount of lace.

S-Tons of dank and is strong on grapefruit. It smells great. I also pick up on some spice from the rye.

T-It is a tad sweet at the start. There is lots of citrus flavor consisting of grapefruit and lemon. In the back the spiciness from the rye is evident. It finishes with a nice bitter grapefruit taste.

M-Medium bodied with a smooth level of carbonation.

D-Incredibly drinkable.

I had 3 pints of this at the brewery and a growler of this at our cabin. A truly great beer that I would love to have better access to on a regular basis.

Draft at The Bistro IPA fest. Cloudy copper color with a small cap that retains well. Spicy rye aroma with floral hoppiness, earthy and zesty, somewhat muted. Tastes of slightly caramelized malt and earthy, spicy rye, floral and citrusy hops. Firm earthy and grapefruity bitterness, too bitter to put down more than one pint, but enjoyable in small quantities. Nice stuff.

Update:

Sampled this fresh on tap at FiftyFifty and it was excellent, quite a bit better than the keg from the IPA fest. Rating bumped from B+ to A.

2/18/2011:

The SF beer week batch of this beer is awesome. Huge tropical fruit aromatics to balance the bitter kick in the finish. Rye comes through nicely, earthy and spicy. A fantastic batch of an already great beer.

Watchin the World Cup at the brewery before the beer fest. Tried out this little gem for the first time, good clarity, orange hue. Aroma was grassy hops, didn't really detect the rye.

Drank it, was blown away. This can compete with Hop Rod Rye. Menu claims 30% rye in the grain bill, and I was suprised it was over 10%. Nuanced to say the least. Super hoppy, almost wet hops. A degree of spice, but lesser than many I've had. Excellent all the way down, and at a decent price.

Had this numorous times, many times the hops fade and the bitterness is way up. Always good, but had to take my perfect 5 taste away, but I'm suspecting that super fresh, still a 5, just its taking the Truckee locals a little longer to finish their kegs I guess.

EDIT: I keep having this beer, but dang, for whatever reason, it seems wildly inconsistent. When its on top of its game, man, its like a '5' in taste, but when its not, its just a brassy bitterness without the same flavor, malt or hop wise. The rating will continue to reflect the overall experience, rather than what it is at the top or bottom of its game.

A: The beer pours a hazed dark amber color with a couple fingers of rocky off-white head and lots of sticky lacing.

S: Just a ton of fresh grapefruit aroma as soon as I open the growler. Lots of resinous pine to go along with it and plenty of other citrus aromas. A nice bit of a rye and some slight bread.

T: Bitter grapefruit peel and pine to go with some juicy grapefruit flavor. Plenty of rye which provides its signature flavor. Bready malts serve as a base without providing too much sweetness.

M: The body is medium with a moderate carbonation and a bitter finish.

D: My first non Eclipse experience with FiftyFifty and I am impressed. A really solid hoppy beer that is just very easy to drink.

Pint glass at The Bistro in Hayward. From notes 05/26/10.

A small well retained head of very large loose bubbles tops a hazy orange body with hints of amber.

Smells like a rye IPA should! Spicy rye with pungent and pine hops and a hint of cannabis.

A brief shot of sweet and clean malt on the entry is almost immediately followed by tangy rye and pungent bitter hop notes. Balanced yet bold, quite impressive.

I may be short on words on this review but I'm definitely not short on love for this beer. Big on flavor but somehow it finishes clean and really draws one in for another sip.

Pours a golden color with a small white head.

Scent of strong bitter hops, citrus, grain, and rye. A balanced and awesome scent.

Taste of rye, grain, bitter hops, and citrus. About on par with Founders' Red's RyePA. Still tasted fresh and hoppy from a three week old growler.

Mouthfeel is light bodied with a biting carbonation.

Tap at the '09 Bistro IPA Festival in Hayward, CA, then again at City Beer in SF.

Hazy copper color with a nice off-white head and some decent lacing.

Aroma is sweet malt, rye, and citrusy hops.

Flavor is similar to the aroma with sweet honeyish malt, rye, and great lingering citrusy hops.

Body is medium-full for the style, and mouthfeel is somewhat lively.

Drinkable and pretty solid overall.

Draught at the Bistro IPA fest. hazy blond with darker hues within, and a lasting head. The rye shows some spice in the aroma, with lots of citrus from the hops as well. Great creamy mouthfeel, with the rye adding a nice balance to citrus and melon fruitiness. Bready and balanced, but with refreshing bitterness. Maybe its uniqueness and great mouth-feel just made it stand out, but this was quite nice without really having an astounding flavor.
