no head on first pour, but then, my first pour is always soft. I have this paranoia that a vigorous pour at first releases too much flavor into the atmosphere. second pour, if the first isn't too volatile, can be a bit more rambunctious...
ultra cool black wax, bitchin' bottle! maybe my 6th or 7th Eclipse since finding them last November.
very black pour, nice and sweet stout/bourbon aroma. dang I love these brews' aromas...!!!! saving the Rittenhouse Rye for last!! sweet and boozy smell, for sure!
taste is thick, but viscosity is thinner. much thinner than the base Totality. I like that this is thinner- it really enhances the flavor. each one is a little different, attributable to the barrel in which it matured, and this one is a little different than the others. nothing is really dominating, but getting tastes of oak, chocolate, (tiny) coffee, vanilla, bourbon (for sure!). and licorice! definitely some licorice! at the end. maybe some anise?
one of THE all time favorites for me, I absolutely LOVE this stuff. why is it so superior to all the others on any given day, any given time? Totality is not this good. nor is the rest of their brews which I have tried (admittedly, not many). but each one has been slightly different, yet always superior to all the others. I just tried my first Abyss yesterday-doesn't even come close!
but alas, like another BA reviewer before me, I wish these were not so pricey. this one was $32 and as much as i'd agree it were worth that (if I made a better wage!) I would love to see this a little less expensive. someone else mentioned they saw it on the shelf for $25 in San Francisco? DEAL!!! i'll take 'em ALL DAY LONG at $25...
resume review: sweet and smooth. almost perfect. a little syrup-y. but all around beautiful. grab one if you have the opportunity, but leave some for me!

From a 650 ml bottle (2012 batch) into a snifter.

A-The brew pours with almost a finger of light mocha-brown head. Retention is poor, but the head leaves some alcoholic legs and spotty lacing on the glass. The beer is black and opaque.

S-The smell is rich and boozy. I get significant bourbon, with lots of vanilla, oak, caramel, and some brown sugar. I also get a lot of roasted flavor, milky chocolate, and a hint of plum and other dark fruits. The bourbon is right up front.

T-The taste, like the smell, is heavy on the bourbon flavors with lots of vanilla, caramel, oak, and booze. Underneath the barrel, I get some dark fruit and raisin, cocoa, and heavily-roasted malts. The alcohol is almost too hot (even though this bottle has been sitting in the cellar a year) and amplifies the bourbon-y qualities. The whole package is pretty sweet (as in sugary sweet) even with the healthy dose of drying oak.

M-Surpisingly, this brew has a fair bit of carbonation (for the style). The carbonation leads to a lighter than average mouthfeel.

O-This is a good beer if you like a little beer with your bourbon; it is complex, shows the barrel well, and drinks nicely, if a bit boozily. Although this beer packs more heat than its 9.5% ABV would lead you to anticipate, the booze and bourbon aren't really a problem, except to the extent that they mostly drown out the base beer...just know what you're in for. While not my favorite Eclipse, this brew will do just fine.

Bomber split 4 ways at tasting. Reviewed from notes.

Molasses-hued pour, near black in glass. Firm tan head drops stealthily over a couple of minutes to a film. Attractive lace trails on swirling.

Good amount of barrel in the nose with appreciable honey and coconut notes, but mostly emphasising the drier aspects of the barrel. Solid toasty, liqourice and rubber base beer elements underneath. Compact and contained.

Less roast, more coconut and dark brwon sugar sweetness. Big and growing chocolate fudge presence.

Quite viscous but medium bodied, with mild, dusty carbonation and emergent booze heat.

Like all the Eclipse beers, this is tight. Very easy-going with a near perfectly calibrated barrel influence.

Jet black body with a dense cappuccino colored head. Good retention.

Aromas really pop. The bourbon brings heavy vanilla and oak. Fudge brownies, leathery earthy smells, espresso.

The fudge and coffee intertwine naturally with the vanilla. The oak lingers on the back of the tongue with a slight boozy heat

Heavy and smooth body with low carbonation. Very smooth.

I love these eclipse variants but wish the price tag was about $10 less. They're fantastic, but there's better for a more reasonable cost.
