Dark brown and black pour, thin tan head, under 1/5". Aroma was nice and choclatey, like the Elijah Craig versions of Eclipse, pumped the chocolate. Even some coconut seemed to come out.
Extremely smooth and choclatey bourbon brownie notes, vanilla, oak. Covers the alcohol amazingly. Caramel moreso as it warms. You really can't tell much difference between this and the regular EC series, it just hits you slightly thicker and more chocolate with more power.

Got this one from cpferris in a trade a while back. Been looking forward to trying this one out for quite some time. Cheers!
From a bomber into a snifter.
2011 bottle
Bottle no.27
Iced in Steel Kegs
APPEARANCE: Pours out clear dark brown, much like the other variants, though perhaps a touch darker, and yields a one finger, medium looking, creamy, tan head with very good retention. Black body with no carbonation evident. Head fades to a full wisp and clings to the sides of the glass. A ring remains until the end and leaves some splotchy dots of lacing down the glass. Nice head, but still a little too light and thin for top marks in the style.
SMELL: Really big. Comes flying out at you from the glass. Really decadent too. Roasted malts, oak, lots of vanilla and sweet cream with molasses and dark chocolate on the nose. Bourbon as well, but not boozy, with plenty of sweet barrel components, molasses and cream, with dark chocolate as well. Interesting, enticing, and really forthcoming. Great.
TASTE: Really good here too. Roasted grain, oak and sweet cream up front. Caramel and molasses sweetness as well, into a flavorful and barrel forward swallow. Bourbon, oak and sweet cream from the barrels with some roasted, bitter dark chocolate as balance. Lots of sweet barrel flavors with a roasted and bitter base, but very little booze on this one. Bold, well balanced, and very enjoyable.
PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Enough weight on the palate, semi-creamy, goes down okay and finishes slightly sticky. No burn at the swallow, but a touch of heat lingers on the palate. Good, but would need to be a bit heavier and silkier for top marks.
OVERALL: This is excellent. The look is still not as dark and menacing as I'd like for an imperial stout, especially an iced version of an imperial stout, but that's a very, very minor detail at this point. The nose was just incredible, with lots of wonderful barrel aromas and some lovely sweet and chocolaty notes rounding it out, and the flavor was bold, interesting and very well balanced. If the feel were a touch bigger, this would be other-worldly. Still, we live on this planet, and this is an absolutely stellar creation. Thanks again for this one cpferris. Best Eclipse beer to date for sure. Would absolutely love to drink this again.

Bomber into a matching eclipse snifter. The brew appears black in color with a dark tan head. This is a very nice looking brew with decent reterion despite the higher alcohol level than all the other eclipse variations. Some clear brown is noted around the edges when held to the light. Some clear alcohol legs stick to the glass slowly dropping down with spots of lace.
The aroma is mostly roast and alcohol with chocolate and earthy noted evolving with some sulfur. A touch of mineral character across the middle and a little rough around the edges. Some raisins to almost plum-like alcohol comes out as it breathes.
The flavor initially is mostly bitter and roasty. Some citrus and fruity raisony alcohol. The bright fruity citrus aspects are interesting with a huge alcohol focus. The alcohol burns with an accompanying acrid bite of roasted bitterness, earth and coffee.
This is a full bodied brew that is very thick and creamy. Easy drinking as a aipper considering but has the harshness of the base beer totality cranked up quite a few notches in all aspects including burn, bite and bitterness. The mouthfeel is hands down the standout in this offering, if the other eclipse offerings had half this thick creamy mouthfeel, they all would be world class. Unfortunately, mouthfeel isnt all that matters and the nose and taste on this is just ok to good, not exceptional.

7/6/2012 and 4/13/2013
Bottle shared by Jason and a bottle from Chris. Thanks!
A: Brown bordering on black with dark red highlights. Small head quickly fades.
S: Cocoa and vanilla. Touch of smoke with strong molasses, anise, and licorice notes. Some booze. Bourbon and oak are faint. A touch of cinnamon, kind of Mexican chocolatesque.
T: Big licorice and roasted notes with a firm anise presence. Light bourbon. Dark chocolate. Strong licorice finish. Mellowed out in 9 months (cold stored though).
M: Full body with medium carbonation. Sticky with warming.
Overall: This second bottle was a lot better than the one I had in 2012. Very nice.
