Poured into a pint glass. Lovely shade of blue wax, 2012 vintage.

3.5 A: Black color. One and a half fingers of frothy/creamy light brown head. Retention is about averageand a short ring of lacing is left.

3.5 S: Like the Rebel Yell, this whiskey is earthy and minerally, but it doesn't suck like RY did. Light leather, caramel, and toastiness. Maybe some coconut notes as well. Oak and vanilla from the barrel. The base gives a roastiness and a decent amount of chocolate.

3.5 T: The taste is like the nose, but it's lacking depth (the nose did too to a lesser extent). Earthy, caramel, molasses, mineral, toast, light leather. Oak and vanilla. Roast and chocolate.

3.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lacking creaminess big time, even more so than most of the other variants.

3.0 D: This is my second least favorite Eclipse from this year. While Rebel Yell was horrid, this isn't bad, but it's nothing special and the barrel aging can't save this one like it has for some of the others.

Big pour gets you maybe half a finger of dark brown foam, not dense enough to last long, the larger bubbles cling to the glass walls, the lacing comes as big splotches, random and irregular, below average stickiness. Black liquid, not even worth commenting on, just black. Steady steamroller of a nose, for all its might not showy, thickly layered coconut custard, vanilla fudge, milk chocolate, caramel, toffee, not really boozy nor toasty, more like being in a cake eating contest, fig, date, apricot fruit, overall more smooth than complex, wears its weight well enough. Full-bodied, the carbonation adds sufficient fluffiness to puff up the attack and relieve some palate weight. A touch drier here than expected in terms of texture. More oak grained booziness but zero burn. Molasses, caramel, butterscotch, mix of both milk and dark chocolates, vanilla and coconut. After that is some tarry earth and breadiness, lifts when the floral aspect demurely asserts itself. Cherry, plum fruit equally mixed with apricot, banana, date fruit. Given its weight, releases well at the end and without truncating the finish. Leverages all it has, no desperation to impress, once more just lacks the subtleties to intrigue. (Blue Wax)

Bottle from trade. Thanks buddy! Blue wax, 2012 Bottle Run 3. Pours dark brown to black with some light shining through, and a small khaki to mocha colored head on top. Aroma of dark fruits, lots of char, oxidation, vanilla, oak, bourbon. Flavor is sweet caramel, char, oak, and a big long vanilla marshmallow finish. Big maltiness here with sweet caramel more reminiscent of a barrel aged old ale or barleywine. Really picked up the barrel nicely. Medium plus bodied with low plus carbonation. The finish is the highlight here. Pretty nice. Very smooth. Aroma taking away from overall.

Poured into a snifter from a 22oz bottle.

An aggressive pour yields little to no head but a slight thin tan film that quickly dissipates to a ring around the glass. The liquid is pitch black and viscous. No light gets through.

Aroma starts off with some nice notes of caramel and molasses. Burnt caramel to be exact. Nice fudgy chocolate notes follow with some good mild dark cocoa bitterness. Surprisingly after more than a year there is still some mild roast in the nose. Very nice notes of mild espresso are perceived along with some slight hints of vanilla and woody spice.

The flavor is pretty intense. Strong barrel notes of booze and some spicy wood and vanilla notes are present in the flavor. The vanilla notes are more dominant as the brew warms but are then offset by some amazing and delicious chocolate notes. Dark fudge and milk cocoa sweetness finish with a nice dark cocoa bitterness follows through the finish of this beer. The mouthfeel is lighter than the appearance would indicate but its still pack a bit of a punch. Overall this is a delicious brew. The base beer shine very well with roast and cocoa notes mixed in with barrel heat and sweetness.
