First had: on tap at Monk's, Philly, PA

Served in a tulip glass. As I've seen this described elsewhere as being orange, perhaps it was just that it was dark in the back bar, but this beer was surprisingly dark in color, maroonish dark brown, with a huge two- to three-finger puff of off-white head; nice retention and crusty lacing. Aroma of red wine and cherry, somewhat tart, hints of grassy funk, oak, and acetic acid. The taste follows the aroma, with nice vinous and berry tartness standard for the style, woody, some acetic and lactic notes, with a chocolaty profile that comes in mid- to end-palate--it's noticeable enough to not be subtle, but subdued enough to be a secondary or tertiary flavor. Interesting. Medium body, pretty unique for the style, full of flavor, and quite enjoyable overall.

On-tap at Stone Sour Fest

Pours a brownish color with a small off-white head. Just a really weird aroma to this. It’s a little meaty, almost bacon-like, a touch salty, too. The aroma is full of sawdust and is overly earthy. A mild vinegar note and some sweet malt. Intense wood and earthy flavors, almost like raw mushrooms. Some vinegar, saw dust, and vanilla. Just not good in any way.

on tap at monks

Pours a deep reddish, almost purply color with some brighter hues. No head or lacing to speak of.

Nice characteristics of grape skin, red wine and wood with a distinctly vinous tone. Acidic and softly funky. Tartness with dark fruit as well.

A decent smack of sourness right up front with red grapes. Wood and yeast-driven funk with a nice red wine flavor carry throughout. A bit darker on the back end, but continued tartness and grape. Finishes with a dry snap of fruit and sourness.

Medium body, very low carbonation, but not completely still. Todd Ashman advised everyone that this was originally carbonated when it left the brewery, but I guess something happened in transit. Either way, the beer didn't lose too much of it's character, and we all quite enjoyed it.

On Tap

Hamilton's Tavern
San Diego, CA

Very dark red, nearly brown in color, at least in the dim light of the tavern, with a thin khaki colored head that leaves the glass spotted with off-white lace.

The aroma is probably the most successful aspect of this beer. It has a nice acidic bite initially, with hints of dark red grape/wine and currant, sweet malt, along with plenty of oak.

The flavor is successful, though not quite as good as the aroma. There's good amount of acidic sourness, currants and red wine character, and lots of oak. There's a big vinegar-like presence on and after the swallow, which is a bit distracting and hurts the drinkability.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

A decent enough Flanders red to break up the stouts, but this is not FiftyFifty's best work.
