3L bottle shared by Sean at Dark Lord Day. Served in an Alvinne snifter.

A - Tan foam settles to a collar, wisps, and tiny specks of lace. Very dark brown body. Looks like Eclipse.

S - A mix of oak, bourbon, honey, chocolate, and mild vanilla. A bit hotter than many of the Eclipse variants, but not excessively so; otherwise quite nice and balanced.

T - The taste is less boozy, with dark chocolate, anise, light oak and honey, dark fruit, faint roastiness. Seems less sweet than other variants I've had. Much more mellow and smooth than the aroma suggests.

M - Smooth, medium-full body that shows some roast and tannin in the finish. Lower carbonation, and mild alcohol warmth after small glass. Seems a bit heftier than some of the other variants.

D - I like this blend better than the 2011 Grand Cru, as it's significantly less hot out of the gate. The 3L got consumed, which is a feat in and of itself. One of the better variants I've had recently in any case.

I had this at an Eclipse tasting next to the 2011 blend. Served from the bottle into a tasting snifter.

I don't think this one has come together nearly as well at the 2011 version. There are some nice chocolate and dark fruit notes, but it was still a bit boozy. I'd be interested in trying this one again down the road a year or two. As it stands now, it was good, but it didn't stand up to some of the other versions.

Bomber into a matching Eclipse snifter and drank side by side with the '11 grand cru. The brew appears dark brown to black in color with a khaki head that displays decent retention.

The aroma contains a pleasant amount of coconut and caramel extracted via the barrel aging along with some earthy to roasty grain inclusion. The booze aspect has mild tang to fruity element but not distracting at all. The way this blend shows the barrel is pretty nice and mellow verses some of the other offerings from this same year.

The flavor is roasty with plenty of alcohol. Notes of earth and something almost solvent in the booze department with lots of fruit and more grainy chocolate in the aftertaste. Whereas the nose showed the smoother side of barrel aging, the taste is much more aggessive and sharp.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. A nice change of pace in the eclipse series but strikingly similar to the other blend. Big points for the aroma of this one, the taste just didnt pair up as nicely. Enjoyable yet maybe best enjoyed with a little age on it to smooth out the rough edges.

Thanks to Chance for sharing.

The beer looks just like every other Eclipse beer for crying out loud. Aromas of roast, light chocolate, a touch of marshmallow. Beautiful flavor. Light to medium in body with moderately low carbonation. The beers in this series either seem to run together or stand out among the crowd. This was a standout for me. A lovely beer.

650 mL bottle poured into an Eclipse snifter. 2012 bottle.

Appearance - Murky black with transparent edges. Not much of a head. Wispy surface.

Smell - Indistinct bourbon aroma. Chocolate and sweetness.

Taste - Same muddled bourbon flavor. The sweetest of all the variants I've had. Lots of chocolate and booze.

Mouthfeel - Slick and creamier than the base beer. Medium carbonation. Sweet and barrel booze finish.

Overall - Drinks like a blend. Tasty, but nothing unique about it.

Poured into a snifter. Bronze wax, 2012 blend, but I have no idea what the blend is.

4.0 A: Black color. A little over one finger of creamy tan head. Retention is pretty good and a short ring of lacing is left.

3.5 S: Smells good enough, but there isn't much of a main focus. Among the aromas you will find leathery bourbon, chocolate, caramel, and coffee. A bit of tannic astringency, good amount of oak, and some vanilla. Reasonably complex, but not a lot of depth. Light booziness.

3.0 T: About the same as the nose, but leaves me unfulfilled. Leather, caramel, coffee, chocolate. Oak, vanilla, and mild roastiness. Not a lot of maltiness or body. Again, pretty complex, but not much depth.

3.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lacking body and creaminess.

3.0 D: I liked last year's Grand Cru a lot better. This one lacks power big time. It's still not too bad.

Bottle poured into snifter.

A: Pours near black with two fingers of dense, light brown head that faded into a thin collar leaving spotty lace.
S: Black coffee, licorice and dark chocolate dominate. Sweeter hints of dark fruits and booze are detectable.
T: Butterier than the nose suggested with very mellow and well integrated flavors. Cocoa, caramel, woody oak, vanilla, sweet booze, brown sugar and maybe molasses and few fig-like dark fruits are present. The finish is buttery and smooth and the aftertaste has figs and roasted coconut as it warms. Not as much anise as the nose.
M: Very smooth and velvety mouthfeel, just a faint hint of booze, low carbonation, and full body. Less warming alcohol burn than some of the other varieties.
O: A very mellow, balanced, and smooth sipper. Top five Eclipse variant for sure.
