Poured from a waxed and capped bomber into a Trillium tulip tasting glass.

Appearance: Pitch black, pours thick. No head, but a very thin pale-coffee crown around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Muted, but probably because this is refrigerator temperature. What I do get is slight booziness, dark fruity malts, some coffee, some deep, dark chocolate. As it warms up these are more prevalent. No rum specifically, but oh well.

Taste: A good amount of coffee bitterness, but not in the way that it would be if there was actual coffee added. Subtle, and the dark tangy chocolate comes through strong as well. Perhaps a hint of rum at the end, but I might just be hoping for it.

Mouthfeel: A bit thin, but still creamy. Sticks around for a long time afterward. Carb is light.

Overall: A bit disappointing in that I didn't really get much in the way of rum, but it was still delicious. Don't think I'll be shelling out the big bucks for this particular variant in the future though.

Syndicate broke out the Big Dick tonight!! Thanks a bunch Darrel... I appreciate the chance to try this one.

Pours thick with a dark brown head... good lacing and long lasting retention.

Nose is pretty interesting... Oaky rum... vanilla.. melted dark chocolate...

Rum is heavier on the palate and meshes better IMO... the oaky vanilla notes move well with the bittersweet chocolate.... smooth velvet dark fruits..

Bigger body with soooo smooth carbonation.... not EtOH bit at all... very nice.

Thanks Darrel... this is the best Eclipse I've had in memory and the best rum barrel beer I can think of. Very cool amigo.

650 mL bottle poured into a tulip.

Appearance - Black with a nice khaki head. Thick collar and some surface wisping.

Smell - Chocolate. Some vanilla. Oak. Rum and some fruitiness

Taste - Rum permeates the whole stout. Dark chocolate. Oak. Vanilla. Rum lingers in the finish, giving it a bit of sweetness.

Mouthfeel - A little creamy. Well carbonated. Oaky finish.

Overall - Like the High West Bourbon, the barrel doesn't overwhelm. Subtle differences from the liquor itself.

650ml fuchsia waxed 2013 bomber bottle run #2 poured into tulip 26/1/14

A like the other variants shes black with a cola edge, large mocha head has decent retention leaving a couple pencil thin rings followed by some random patches

S milk chocolate, a little honey, faint rum but woody char comes out, some sweetened coffee, some earthy notes I can't place, licorice, sugar coated raisins work well with some sponge toffee, hint of booze on a deep whiff, smells good

T darker roast, rum comes out more then the nose, everything's still there in one form or another just intensified, quite rich with slightly more booze then the nose but still well concealed considering 12%, tastes slightly better then it smells with just a little more oomph

M thick and silky, feels a little slick stopping short of oily, enough carbonation to please, booze hits my chest but not much on the way down, woody chocolate finish

O one of my favorite from the series, like the others I have a hard time believing this is nearly 12%, not lacking in any area and other then the price tag I have nothing to complain about

I think this is the 7th Eclipse that I've had the pleasure of buying in Alberta and it might be my favorite. I'm pretty stoked I have one of each to sit on as I can see everyone of them improving after a couple years and I'm sure I'll enjoy revisiting series down the road

22oz bottle, run number 1 of 2013, aged in La Cruzan 18-year-old rum barrels. Soul Coughing is currently singing 'It goes black black black black and blacker..." on my retro playlist - spookilicous.

This beer pours yet another almost perfectly black abyss, with still the subtlest of basal cola edges, and three fingers of densely puffy, finely foamy, and playfully bubbly mocha head, which leaves some pockmarked wavecrest lace around the glass as it easily subsides.

It smells of chalky cocoa, creamy caramel malt, toffee squares, sugary rum - weirdly sans the immediate nasal alcohol burn - some soft, well-sugared black coffee, anise, and musty, earthy hops. The taste is more bittersweet chocolate, bready caramel malt, neutered black licorice, likewise benign day-old coffee notes, an underwhelming dark rum sweetness, a touch of vanilla-tinged barrel astringency, and still understated earthy, wet leafy hops.

The carbonation is light and frothy, the body a solid, sticky medium-full weight, and beguiling in its smoothness, with a bare, tangential creaminess. It finishes still rather sweet, the chocolate malt, licorice, well-sugared coffee, and laid-back (is there really any other way?) rum barrel notes holding sway.

One finely rendered version of this broad-spanning barrel-treatment series - here, the rum guest star is inherently ineffectual enough to let the base imperial stout strut its own wares, and strut it does - all the good stuff, and hardly a wisp of alcohol warming, especially given the well elevated ABV. The best of the lot, so far, but for the wrong reasons, mi dispiace.
