L: Poured from a growler to a goblet. Had a dark, mahogany brown color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a quarter inch of foamy, off white head that quickly dissipated. Below average lacing.
S: A slightly muted aroma of malt, chocolate, dark fruit, and Belgian yeast.
T: Tasted of a bit of dark fruit (figs, raisins, prunes), a lot of malt (a major ingredient here), some light Belgian-style yeast notes, a little chocolate (could've used more), and some booze as well. An underpowered flavor all around. It has a thin quality. All the ingredients are there, just not in the proper amounts.
F: A fair amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.
O: A disappointing beer from Alewerks. Could've been better.

Beautiful color and aroma is of bourbon, malt. Taste is bold and the bourbon comes through quite strongly with touches of coffee and chocolate in the background. Belgian characteristics abound

For 12% this is a very mild beer. I do get plenty of whiskey flavor, without the bite. Undertones of a Quad, like date, prune, raisin and fig. Some Belgian yeast flavor. Drinks very easy.

Poured from a 500 ml brown bottle into a clear glass tulip. 2015 vintage. Purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA).
A: Murky brown with no head and no lacing. Unappealing.
S: Watered down fig and date and mild herbal hops. The barrel character is minimal -- maybe a little bit of sweet booze character.
T: Really poor, especially when you compare to their powerhouses of barrel aged beer (BB Porter and Cafe Royale) which they have also raised the price of significantly this year, so this is a tougher pill to swallow than it should be at $16.95. Watered down dark maltiness with some caramel, minimal phenolics, and some herbal hops. Barrel character is also meek with diluted vanilla and oak component. ONe of the biggest disappointments of the year.
M: Low carbonation and medium body leaves a thin, watery feel for the style.
O: Huge, huge let-down, really an embarrassment for Alewerks given their previous accomplishments. I thnk they should have poured this out frankly - I love their other two BB beers and their other special releases have been good, but this is really poor and hurts their credibility a lot because it is so far below the bar.

This beer is a triumph of packaging over good brewing. The box and fancy bottle set you up for a great experience, but what you get is thin, bourbonish, wine-like non-beer.

Even with an aggressive pour, there is barely any head on the slightly muddy dark brown. Aroma reveals some bourbon, chocolate, dried fruit, and anise. Flavor is comparable, with a nice balance between the bourbon and fig/raisin. An interesting bit of walnut in the finish. No ABV listed, so I'll guess around 9%. Carbonation is too subtle. For the cork and box treatment (and price for the size), this beer is underwhelming.
