Peaks around one finger’s worth of deep brown foam, many larger bubbles, disappears very quickly with only a thin ring around the edges, the lacing is equally thin to nonexistent. The liquid is a fully opaque brownish to black color, once in awhile you’ll see a tiny bubble break the surface, barely any sign of an orange or yellow tint. The nose lays it all on the table immediately, fully loaded with malty chocolate, coffee ice cream, vanilla, marshmallow, caramel scents, challah bread too, there’s good roastiness to it too but not really texturally sharpening the sweetness, no citrus, no earthy qualities, it’s a one trick pony but it nails that trick. Medium-bodied, surprisingly focused and dry in texture, the carbonation is strong and full of pinpricks across the palate. At times you do get a light minerally aspect along with mixed sweet grains. Besides that it’s back to the cocoa, coffee, cola, vanilla bean, whipped cream and so on. Monochrome yet has very good length, the flavors persist for some time. It does not overreach, does not good unduly sweet, it’s just a friendly, malt driven porter, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Purchased on vacation at Wine Cheese & More at Chincoteague Island, VA

Very dark brown in color with a scant 2 finger tannish head that recedes to a ring around the glass.

Wow! First impression of the aroma is of hot chocolate with a hint of vanilla. Later on it's more like coffee and toasted malt.

Fairly tart at first taste, but it settled down to mainly rich black coffee and light toasted malt. Some whiffs of chocolate. A bit of caramel in the back. The tartness moderates, but lingers throughout with some sweet malt punching through now and then.

Moderate in feel with some peppery carbonation and light astringency. Warming.

Very good porter. Normally I like my porters sweeter than this, but I liked this rendition. It's got good balance and an interesting blend of flavors and aromas.

poured 12oz bottle into snifter.

A - Dark cola brown with a khaki head. Thin ring and some spotty lacing.

S - Coffee, cola, and charred wood notes.

T - Some roasted malt that gives it a coffee like flavor. There is a bit of sweet cola and a bit of charred wood. Not all that exciting.

M - Thin body, modest carbonation yet smooth.

O - Basic porter that is somewhat timid in flavor. I really enjoy porters and have some good ones to drink in WI. This just didn't do it for me.

12oz bottle poured into an AleWerks snifter.

The beer pours a deep cola brown color, almost black, nice and opaque with a thick, soapy caramel head that has moderate retention and leaves a few spots of lace behind. The aroma is of dark, rich, malted grain, light cocoa, toasted coffee beans, very earthy ones at that and a bit of chalkiness. The aroma definitely straddles the line between earthy and sweet, but doesn't have a lot of depth or complexity. The same rings true for the flavors, lots of dark barley, burnt and bitter cocoa, toasted coffee bean is very light and faded, but brings out some earthiness and almost an ashiness that isn't out of place or unpleasant, but doesn't really congeal the beer that well. Again, it's lightly bitter, not too sweet, but straightforward and simple. The mouthfeel is okay, lots of carbonation but it's still quite smooth, a little lighter and thinner than I'd be prefer with an easy going finish that sits well.

Verdict: A nice rendition of an American Porter from AleWerks. I wish it was a bit more robust and richer in the mouth, but all in all, it achieves what it set out to do. I could definitely drink a few of these in the winter time.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours an inky black, completely opaque, with a full finger of chocolate colored head that quickly disappeared into a thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass.

Aroma: Lots of malt and freshly baked dark bread. Bitter-sweet dark chocolate and caramel. Slight coffee notes.

Taste: Lots of roasted malt and coffee and chocolate up front with some mild sweetness at the finish. Some slight tobacco flavors to, maybe from the roasted malt.

Mouthfeel: Medium and slightly more than a little chewy. However, there’s practically no carbonation to the beer, zip, zero, nada.

Overall: This is a very, very good porter. I really enjoy the roastiness that this beer has. That being said, compared to the other Washington Porter, that being brewed by Yards, this porter comes in second best. However, I still look forward to having another of these.
