12 oz bottle at 40 degrees into standard pint glass
Aroma of roasted malt and molasses
Head small (2 cm), light brown, creamy, rapidly diminishing to 2 mm layer
Lacing good – mostly complete rings with small bubbles, a few stalactites
Body dark brown, opaque
Flavor of roasted malt, some molasses, and nutmeg (?), somewhat sweet; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate medium, creamy, lively carbonation.

A no too bad brown ale which from me is high praise since I don’t like brown ales. If the label had said “brown ale” it would still be on the shelf. That said, the beer is quite good. Despite the website description, I can find neither chocolate nor nutty tastes – but it does seem to have both molasses and nutmeg-like qualities.

Had AleWerks Tavern Ale in a restaurant called Rocco's Steakhouse right in Williamsburg, NC. It was a nice Black Ale. No head at all in the pour. Beer has a nice smell to smell to it and a decent taste. Was not overwhelming. It was a average Black Ale to me.

I love Alewerks's Pumpkin Ale, so I decided to give its brown a shot. Here goes:

A: Just OK. A very dark brown (nearly opaque). What really irked me was the fact that there was practically no head. What head was produced readily dissipated, leaving no lacing.

S: Not bad, but just OK. Faint hints of caramel and brown sugar, but on the whole almost no complexity or nothing to gawk over. Somewhat boozy, which is funny considering that it's only 5.6% ABV.

T: Slight better than OK, but not too good either. Brown sugar, some dark spices and a hint of dark fruit. Again, like in the nose, the taste was surprisingly boozy. Could taste lots of alcohol at the back of the tongue.

M: Rather watery, but not bad. Very little carbonation, too.

O: Just OK. Probably will not be getting it again.

A: Pours a dark garnet with a short pale tan head. little head retention but a wee bit of lacing.

S: Starts with a bit of chocolate and caramel. There is a bit of dark fruit with some bread crust and a mild undertone of earthy hops. Nice healthy malt aroma

T: Caramel and toffee up front with a bit of black coffee in the lingering on the palate. A little sweet. There's a bit of spicy, earthy hop that comes through. Nicely Balanced and has a good bitter hop foundation. A few dark fruity esters are present but not much. The finish is surprisingly a bit to the dry side and light bitter aftertaste.

M: Medium body, low carbonation which is good in my opinion. I bit of a velvety mouthfeel. Not too much acidity or carbonation biting the tongue in this brew. Nice.

O: This is a very nice beer. Seems to live somewhere between a northern and southern English brown ale but with a touch more hop presence. The hops come through but do not over power the malt. I like this beer quite a lot. It's a smooth drinking beer that doesn't attempt to overwhelm the palate with sharp flavors. I'll be buying a six pack the next time I'm in Williamsburg.

Nice ale which I am sure is suited for all of the masses that visit Williamsburg, VA and are looking for an authentic ale. It is a good beer but seems to fall a little flat as far as head and flavor. Overall, a commendable effort and I will definitely follow Alewerks in all beers that they produce in the future. Thanks for all the authentic beers that you produce !

A- good looking, dark brown, opaque. Thin (weak) root beer colored head, disappeared fairly quick.

S- malt, spice, chocolate.

T- a little hop, bitter, gingerbread cookie.

M- light to medium. Thin. Warm bourbon barrel kind of feel.

O- a very solid, good beer. Recommendable. I've always been a fan of Sam Smith's Nut Brown Ale, and I think this is better.

Cheers all!
