A: Semi-clear, dark brown beer topped by a small off-white head. I only get a little bit of lacing and the retention is low.

S: Heavily toasted malts, it smells very porter-like. Other aromas are of brown bread and earthy English hops.

T: The taste has the same roasted malt character as noted in the nose, plus some caramel sweetness, nutty flavors and a slight coffee-like bitterness.

M: Medium body with a low level of carbonation. The aftertastes are of nuts and a light bitterness from coffee and hops. Fairly dry

O: A unique beer in that it reminded me of both a nut brown ale and a porter. Well executed, unique and enjoyable.

Thanks to Billy for this one!

not a brown ale fan, but felt that this beer held up its part in being allowed in the brown ale category. The beer has a nice flavor, not too bitter, and holds well as it is drank. Kudos to Alewerks for producing an ale from an ancient recipe that is very enjoyable today

Big nose of chocolate malts, dry cocoa powder, molasses, light cola nut, brownie batter and barley.

The flavors are dry but delicious; Chocolate malt, cola nut, molasses, barley malt, grain and Graham cracker. It finishes with light mint leaf and herb tones.

This is way too thin. It detracts greatly from the overall experience and flavor.

A: Pours a typical brown with a fair head.

S: Malty caramel and graham cracker with no hop aroma. Some raisin.

T: Caramel and a bit of toffee and graham cracker. Low bitterness. Sweeter finish but not too sweet.

M: Medium body, low carbonation. Nice creamy mouthfeel. no astringency.

O: WHat a pleasant surprise to find this in a cooler at Colonial WIlliamsburg. A beautifullly crafted brown ale with a malt forward balance. Alewerks has outdone themselves with this brew. My only criticism is that you can't get it anywhere else. Looks like I have to make more trips to Williamsburg, as this is now one of my favorite english brown ales.

On-tap at Chownings Tavern Williamsburg, VA. 18th century recipe. Pours no head, no lace. Deep brown color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. Light malty chocolate nose and flavor is roasted chocolate with a burnt chocolate finish. $5.50 for a pint mug.
