750 ml bottle into snifter; no bottle dating, but was released recently. Pours fairly crystal clear deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of tart cherry, cranberry, raisin, prune, fig, pear, apple, caramel, molasses, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light smoke, oak, clove, vinegar, funk, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark malt, fruity/funky yeast, and moderate barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of tart cherry, cranberry, raisin, prune, fig, pear, apple, caramel, molasses, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, oak, light clove, light smoke, vinegar, funk, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Light fruity/earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of cherry, cranberry, raisin, prune, fig, pear, apple, caramel, molasses, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, oak, light clove, light smoke, vinegar, funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, balance, and robustness of dark malt, fruity/funky yeast, and moderate barrel flavors; with a nice malt/acidity balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, moderately slick, and lightly acidic mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent sour scotch ale. All around great complexity and balance of dark malt, fruity/funky yeast, and moderate barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip in for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Purchased at Champagne's in Warren MI for around $13.00 for a 750ml bottle. Served at 12deg C in a tulip. Sitting on this one for around 2yrs or so.

A- Opens well and pours a tiny off white head that is gone by the time I put the bottle down. Nice dark ruby red colour and filtered clear

S- Nice peat hints. Not scotchy at all. Hint of sourness

T- Nice interesting complex blend. Has some fruits and a sourness to it that perks the brew up. Never had one like this. Rodenbach on steroids.

M- Hits you with sour than creamy then dry. Very complex

O- Nice brew. Wish I had another. Will buy if I see again though and if you get a chance you should too. No smokiness as others say. I do not like smoke beers at all and this one I got no smoke at all.

Food Pairing

This nice brew went very well with......... Brazed beef short rib in a mushroom sauce.

Enjoy

750mL bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours a clear yet dark sienna brown color. Some minimal grey froth.

(S)- Some deeper malts meets a lightly smokey/brined peat character with some underlying tart oakiness.

(T)- A bigger smokey brine profile meets some tart vinegar notes. Think raisin and grape meets olives. Fairly acidic.

(M)- A good carbonation level. An interesting blend of smoky briney peat meets some tart fruitiness.

(O)- It is different. An interesting blend/idea for a beer. This reminds me of the sweetness of a manahattan combined with the dryness and brine of a dirty martini

I picked up a bottle of Brau Brothers Brewing's Bancreagie Sour Peated Ale last week for $16.49 at The Lager Mill. I was looking for something new to try and a sour peated ale really caught my eye, so lets see how it goes. 2015 Vintage. Poured from a brown 22oz bottle into a teku.

A- The label looks ok, it's got a simple design to it and it isn't too eye catching. It poured a redish brown color that has a little bit of a purple hue to it and when held to the light it takes on more of a ruby color with two fingers worth of tan head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some nice patchy lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with some fruits being the first to show up and it impart some dark cherry and berry like aromas with the cherries seeming to stick out the most. Up next comes some tart aromas that are followed by some smokey aromas that are on the lighter side of medium and impart that signature peat aroma. This beer has a good aroma, it's tart, fruity and smokey.

T- The taste seems to be very similar to the aroma and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with those tart fruit aspects being the first to show up and they impart the same aspects that they did in the aroma with the cherries still sticking out the most. Up next comes a little bit of a malty flavor that's followed by the smoke which imparts a nice peated smoked flavor that's still on the lighter side of medium, On the finish comes a little more tartness with a nice fruity ans smokey aftertaste. This is a good tasting beer, all the different aspects show up evenly and work well with each other.

M- Smooth, crisp, not acidic, medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel is good and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and I thought it was a good example of the style, I wasn't sure how the smokey and sour flavors would work together, but this beer proved to me that they can actually go pretty well together and I thought they were nicely balanced. This beer has nice drinkability, one glass is the perfect amount for me, but I don't think I would have any trouble drinking the whole bottle to myself. What I like the most about this beer was how well the different aspects worked with each other, it was much better than I thought it would be. What I like the least about this beer is nothing, there isn't anything that I disliked or would change, it's good just the way it is. I would buy this beer again, it would be nice to have a bottle in the cellar and I would recommend trying this beer, especially if you like sour beers and smoked beers. All in all I was pretty happy with this beer and I'm glad I took a chance on it. So far this is my favorite beer from this brewery and it's above average as far as sour beers good. Good job guys this is a tasty beer, keep it up.

A big thanks to Jeff for this novelty. 750ml capped and waxed bottle into a Founders snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a rich 2 finger cream colored head with good retention. Lacing is thick and layered with excellent stick. Beer is a clear dark cola color. Fantastic looking beer.

Nose reveals an obvious tartness. Nose of tart plum, wood, soy sauce, and pureed red fruit. Aromatic but kind of awkward. I can't tell if this is supposed to be "wild" or the brewery is trying to pass off an infection as intentional.

Opens tart plum, raspberry and blackberry. Peat, oak and mossy tartness in the middle with a rumble of booziness in the back. Some caramel and molasses sweetness struggle to balance out the sour. Ends rather mellow with wood, brown sugar and caramel coming through. Aftertaste of tart red fruit and more peat. Strange but weirdly enjoyable.

Medium bodied with moderate to ample carbonation. Smooth but with some bubbles in the mouth and goes down viscous and oily. Finishes messy with a long, lingering aftertaste. For the high ABV, surprisingly drinkable.

This is certainly an "open-mind" beer in that one really has to go into it with no expectation. A weird combination of flavors that kind of works if one is receptive to it, this is definitely unique. Worth trying but no guarantees you won't hate it.

If you walk in knowing, and acknowledging its a peated sour - it is a good peated sour! If you do not like peat, then you wont necessarily enjoy this. I did, but it is quite unique!
