Poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a Duvel tulip. No freshness date. Received from my brother Greg -- nice one!

A: Black with beige 1/2-to-1-finger head that falls away quickly and leaves a rare spot or two of lace.

S: The aroma is that of a much bigger beer with strokes of coffee, fudge and a light dash of licorice. Powerful and very appetizing.

T: The flavor succeeds even more with big milk chocolate fudge and coffee flavors with licorice bite in the finish. There is a touch of milk sweetness, but the bigger roast flavors really carry this brew.

M: Feels a lot bigger as well. I didn't know the ABV and would have though this was an 8.5% ABV beer. Medium-to-full bodied with low carbonation which leaves it creamy without feeling syrupy.

O: One of the most surprising beers I have had in a long time -- the components come together optimally to provide a huge flavor and aroma experience in a relatively low ABV package. Moos Joos proves that you don't need high gravity to have big aroma and flavor. Great job Brau Brothers.

12oz bottle poured into a chalice. Thanks to storminspank for this.

A: Very black with faint light at the edges. Half finger creamy mocha head with decent retention and lacing.

S: Lots of oatmeal, coffee, and lactose. Light roast. Faint hints of chocolate and anise.

T: Chocolate and lactose upfront. Roast coffee and anise come big in the middle. Finishes with chocolate and oatmeal.

M: Medium light body. Medium light carbonation. Silky.

O: Haven't had many milk stouts but this is pretty tasty. Not a fan of anise but it wasn't over the top like Stone's Belgo Anise.

I have been wanting to try this beer for a long time! Ran into a 6er the night before KBS release party finally popping the top on a bottle!

poured into snifter glass.

Appearance: light black bodied beer with a one and a half finger high head that fades to a thin cap quickly. Spotty lace on side of glass.

Smell: smells like a good milk stout should! decent roasty malts and lactose are noted right away in the nose. Little smoke and a little black licorice and even a little fruity. Overall it smells fairly sweet.

Taste: A little inderwhelming compared to the nose, but its still tasty. Mild raost and smoke mixes with a sweet and lactose / milky taste. You can taste a little bit of the oats in this beer as well. Mild roast in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: light end of a medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Silky, creamy, and smooth thanks to the oats. Really drinkable stout, a little thinner than I like, but it works okay in this beer. Carbonation is good match for this beer.

Overall: Nice sessionable milk stout. Easy drinking and simple beer; make it a little thicker and a little more robust. It is an enjoyable stout!

Been meaning to try this for a while, finally getting around to drinking it. Enjoyed 5 Feb 2012, reviewed from notes.

Pours very dark brown, essentially black. A hint of light through the edges, but this beer looks thick. Medium brownish tan head, one finger, okay retention and a bit of lacing.

The smell is really interesting. I've never had an oatmeal milk stout before, but this smells like what I'd expect from one. A pleasant full milky-oaty sweetness. It's a blend that works really well together. I don't get much of the stout, just a bit of roast in the background.

Taste is a little bland, IMO. That same oaty milky sweetness, but it's muted. And again, I don't know where the malts went, as they just don't present much flavor here. A mildly bitter back end rolls through. I want more flavor out of it.

Mouthfeel is quite nice. Silky, slick, and full, all in one big mouth-filling combo. Carbonation is right where it should be - medium-low.

An interesting combo, and a pleasant, easy-drinking stout. My main complaint is that I want more flavor. For a beer with this much involved, the taste should have more potency or more variety or both.

a - looks like a fresh pint of black coffee, near zero clarity, thin latte cap

s - fresh cream, oily coffee beans, sweet honey, more coffee, really a pleasant aroma I think

t/m - milk and oatmeal as promised, aftertaste like a dark roast with half and half, the oats take a back seat to the lingering latte flavors - mouthfeel could stand to get beefed up a bit

o - overall, this is a solid offering from a brewery that is really hit or miss for me, I'd recommend this to any stout fan

pours out an opaque brown colour with the slightest of ruby hues. ruby stained dark tan head appears with vigor and reduces to some fine lace. chocolate covered cherry aroma with accents of malted milk balls and chocolate ice cream. very nice! the flavour profile hits first with some dark roasted malts, quickly followed by a milk chocolate/chocolate milk combination. the slightly sour/lactic aspect has it's day making the ripe red fruit nuances seemingly taste like liquid chocolate covered candies. pretty yummy stuff. this liquid delicacy has a medium body with a pretty tame mouthfeel...if the sour flavour can be described as a feel, then this has it, in a good way. very drinkable...a real treat.

overall...oatmeal stout meets milk stout works for me. recommended.

*disclaimer* 4-5 years ago i ripped this brewery for serious issues when it came to bottling/packaging after buying a bunch of bad/infected/horrible beers. i've been reluctant to purchase anything from Brau Bros. since then but moo joos has restored my confidence in the libations from Lucan. two in a row now from them that i enjoyed.
