Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Opaque seal brown liquid rests beneath a highly active mass of foam which disappears before I even have a chance to evaluate its color. Minimal lacing; poor retention.

Light roast barley, chicory, and a hint of dusty graininess from the oats. Low caramel aromatics are hinted at as well.

Light lactic tartness melds with a gentle roast malt core. Mid palate I taste berries, cherries, and raisins. A sweet vanilla/white chocolate mixture comes out in the finish which is sweeter than you'd expect from the palate entry though not overly-so. Hints of spice and marshmallow are thrown in for good measure.

Medium-light-bodied, and a touch thin with low carbonation...though it "tastes" creamy per the addition of lactose sugar and oats.

A simple but tasty breakfast beer - a good example of a style well suited to the Mid-West.

Pours a light tan head. Color is dark brown nearing black.

Aroma: Espresso and cocoa with chocolate mixed in. Some vanilla and roast. Creamy lactose flavors.

Taste: Mimics the nose, but it is a little sweater and has more of a vanilla and caramel flavor. Nice coffee and a light roast flavor. Pleasant.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy. Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Ends with a little coffee bitterness.

Overall, a decent milk stout. Very enjoyable and a solid offering. I'd drink more.

On tap at Pat's Tap. The script with Brau is that everything is good with the beer until it hits the mouth. Then the trouble begins. Let's see how it goes this time. The Brothers should have a leg up - it's a style I love.

Pretty dark pour, not a lot of head. Good lacing though. Smell is more coffee than advertised. Roasts. Bittering. Not as many sweet smells as a fella might expect from a Milk Stout. Then again, a fella might not know what the F he is talking about. Still, an enjoyable smelling beer. So far so good...

...And right on cue, Moo Joos goes into the mouth and off a cliff. Bitter, malts, roast, and that damned, can't-escape-from-it dirty water Brau taste. Again with the dirty water? Are you kidding me?

Moving on to mouthfeel. You know, dirt doesn't just taste bad, it feels terrible in the mouth. Aggravating gritty feel. And this comes light years away from the thick, coagulating feel of a Milk Stout.

And with that, I throw my hands up in the air in dismay. I would love for another Minnesota brewery to step up and make like Surly and THB and be great, and I would love for it to be Brau. But they're not. Frankly I'm baffled by the ratings for this beer. In my book, if you can't get milk stout right, you can't really be redeemed. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a Brau beer and said "maybe this is the one they turn it around with". No more. This time,I mean it.

Dark brown, plenty of light gets through around the edges, very small head on it, less than 1/8". Aroma, what the, where are the stout like qualities? Coffee, chocolate, 2 row, roasting,. . . .hello?

Taste, very bland, gritty lactose like character as if it didn't dissolve. Really reminded me of an even blander oatmeal stout with some creamer added to it, to give it that weird textured sweetness I'm pulling down. Middle of the road in almost every way, doesn't make me like or dislike it really (I guess dislike since I had my expectations up). Overall the bland and thinness of the experience were probably the greatest letdowns.

If it was any thinner, I'd think people were cutting this with like, water and nonfat milk.

Poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a Duvel tulip. No freshness date. Received from my brother Greg -- nice one!

A: Black with beige 1/2-to-1-finger head that falls away quickly and leaves a rare spot or two of lace.

S: The aroma is that of a much bigger beer with strokes of coffee, fudge and a light dash of licorice. Powerful and very appetizing.

T: The flavor succeeds even more with big milk chocolate fudge and coffee flavors with licorice bite in the finish. There is a touch of milk sweetness, but the bigger roast flavors really carry this brew.

M: Feels a lot bigger as well. I didn't know the ABV and would have though this was an 8.5% ABV beer. Medium-to-full bodied with low carbonation which leaves it creamy without feeling syrupy.

O: One of the most surprising beers I have had in a long time -- the components come together optimally to provide a huge flavor and aroma experience in a relatively low ABV package. Moos Joos proves that you don't need high gravity to have big aroma and flavor. Great job Brau Brothers.

12oz bottle poured into a chalice. Thanks to storminspank for this.

A: Very black with faint light at the edges. Half finger creamy mocha head with decent retention and lacing.

S: Lots of oatmeal, coffee, and lactose. Light roast. Faint hints of chocolate and anise.

T: Chocolate and lactose upfront. Roast coffee and anise come big in the middle. Finishes with chocolate and oatmeal.

M: Medium light body. Medium light carbonation. Silky.

O: Haven't had many milk stouts but this is pretty tasty. Not a fan of anise but it wasn't over the top like Stone's Belgo Anise.

I have been wanting to try this beer for a long time! Ran into a 6er the night before KBS release party finally popping the top on a bottle!

poured into snifter glass.

Appearance: light black bodied beer with a one and a half finger high head that fades to a thin cap quickly. Spotty lace on side of glass.

Smell: smells like a good milk stout should! decent roasty malts and lactose are noted right away in the nose. Little smoke and a little black licorice and even a little fruity. Overall it smells fairly sweet.

Taste: A little inderwhelming compared to the nose, but its still tasty. Mild raost and smoke mixes with a sweet and lactose / milky taste. You can taste a little bit of the oats in this beer as well. Mild roast in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: light end of a medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Silky, creamy, and smooth thanks to the oats. Really drinkable stout, a little thinner than I like, but it works okay in this beer. Carbonation is good match for this beer.

Overall: Nice sessionable milk stout. Easy drinking and simple beer; make it a little thicker and a little more robust. It is an enjoyable stout!
