One of the few small grains still grown in Southwestern Minnesota, malted rye is the base for this one-of-a-kind ale brewed and aged in tiny Lucan, Minnesota.Following a long, slow fermentation, the beer is stored away in used rye whiskey barrels brought North from our friends at Templeton, located in the equally tiny town of Templeton, Iowa.

Brought a vintage 2011 bottle to a family Christmas party to share. It was a huge hit. We were smoking cigars and had just split a bottle of Bolt Cutter so my palate wasn't in perfect shape but I will do my best to review it here.

A. Beautiful dark amber with a slightly red and rosy hue. Forms a small but substantial head.

S. Gives a strong aroma of sweet caramel, vanilla, bourbon, and a slight hint of rye.

T. Sweet, boozy, and flavorful. Not harsh or overwhelming but packs a lot of caramel and bourbon flavors with a nice vanilla finish. A very refined flavor, possibly from the year of age on it.

M. Smooth. Not syrupy or thick at all but coats the palate. Slightly carbonated and easy to drink.

Overall: An awesome beer. I will be seeking this out again but my local store is now sold out.

Another beer from March Madness 2017. Don't think I've had a rye wine before.

Pours that brown and dark red mixture of a color. 1/3" light brown head. Good retention, small compact bubbles. Requisite caramel, vanilla, bourbon interplay aroma wise. Nothing specific to rye here, barrel or grain. Maybe its "maltier" I dunno.

Taste, I appreciate that this isn't super boozy, allows to get more in tune with this unique beer. Nice and toasty. I'm getting that very light residual rye spice and sweeter barrel as it warms, pretty nice mouth feel and taste to it as it continues, each sip settled in nicer than the last one. She's a sticky one and better for it. Feelings of molasses, brown malt, rye, caramel, toffee, bourbon, dark fruit, but nothing really dominated other than that smooth malty current all the way down.

I'd like to see more of these barrel aged offerings that aren't massive booze bombs. This was a good example of a 9% barrel offering that bangs/slaps as the kids say.

Pours kind of a brownish color, with a 1 finger slightly off white head. The head retention is decent, and some lacing on the glass.
The nose from my first impression is really rich with the rye barrel aroma. The aroma has a slight sweetness to it, and is pleasing.
Taste - first sip at 57 F - Is quite interesting, and a very interesting mix of flavors. Up front it's a mellow flavor profile, then the rye kicks in. The rye does linger for quite a while.
Smooth feel up front, then the alcohol - 9% - kicks in. There's a nice feel from the rye barrel. The beer does linger on the palate, and has a nice body.
I've got 4 more of these (and might be able to get more), and I know they can be aged. I will be ageing them and I'll see how they change over the years.

Waxed 750ml bottle vintage 2011. Poured into a snifter, the brew appears mahogany in color with ruby clarity and a firm khaki head.

The smell is vinous with caramel malt and oaky notes blending to vanilla sweetness. The taste has toasty almost bready rye upfront than whiskey oak and orange almost herbal character across the back that feels mildly medicinal. Plenty of smooth vanilla in the aftertaste.

This is medium bodied and modestly carbonated. Overall im really happy with how this has turned out. Im curious what it was like fresh because now with a few years of age on it, its pretty wonderful.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a dark and heavy looking caramel brown with extremely thin head that quickly disappears.
S: Sweet caramel malt, dark dried fruit, spicy rye, brown sugar, cola, and hints of clove.
T: Boozy brown sugar, dark dried fruit, notes of spicy rye and whiskey (subdued with time however these aspects do grow as this opens up and warms a bit), and notes of banana and clove.
M: Moderately heavy body. Loads of sweetness (mildly sticky) with shades of boozy bite (hinting at its former self). Extremely smooth with a nice lingering on the palate.
D: Reading recent reviews of this made me a bit nervous. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this has held up well over time...but I probably wouldn't hold onto it much longer (maybe just a tad past peak). Perhaps different cellaring techniques account for the wide swings of recent reviews. Very nice sipper...allow it to warm a bit for optimal enjoyment.
