First off, this is the best (good) beer bargain I've ever found: $4.59 a six-pack. I wasn't expecting much, so I was pleasantly surprised.

This is quite different from other porters I've tried, as it has a very light body. The downside to the body is that head retention was pretty poor. Initially I got a nice big, fluffy head, but it soon disappeared completely, and swirling the glass just produced some fizz that also disappeared. The smell wasn't like a regular porter or stout either, and I think all I smelled was some black malt and fresh hops. None of the malt aroma I usually associate with dark ales. Color was straight up stout-black, so they must be putting quite a bit of patent malt in there. The taste was quite good, lots of chocolate and black malt roastiness, but still lacking the maltiness I associate with the style. Hop bitterness was minimal and there was very little aftertaste. Mouthfeel was unique as well: not big bubbled like a lager, but not small and creamy like a medium-bodied ale. It had its own unique smoothness, sort of a light, frothy, crisp feel. That's how I'd describe the whole experience - light.

Whether you're just getting into porters & stouts or are a seasoned dark beer afficionado, this will be a good experience. It brings crispness to the dark beer arena without sacrificing the roasted malt flavor. Pretty much the definition of a session porter.

12oz bottle into tulip.

A - Black as night with a thick tan head.

S - Coffee, roasted malt, slight milk chocolate.

T - Subtle but tasty blend of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and charred wood.

M - Light-medium mouthfeel, smooth, creamy. Lots of carbonation, chalky grainy finish.

O - This is a fairly decent, pleasant porter. The flavor is light but makes the beer very easy to drink.

Of the 25 American porters I have tried this one is my favorite. Easy to drink, affordable and loaded with roasted malt and dark chocolate taste. Although it is brewed locally it is hard to find in Southeastern PA, unfortunately. I am willing to drive an hour to pick up a case in Wilkes-Barre area because I am so fond of it. The other commonly available craft porters are a bit harsh or too weak and too high priced for every day drinking. Stegmaier is perfect for any occasion and goes well with any food.

Jet black with no light around the edge this Porter had all the components of a good stout. The head was thick in the middle and sat above a layer of carbonation.

The aromas were dark, dried fruits like prune date and raisin. A touch of chocolate and small bit of roasted coffee comes neatly tucked away.

The flavor is rich with the dried fruits and raisin seems dominant. Slight touches of prune and date mix with a dark chocolate. I did at times detect some malt, coffee and a smokey char but it was rare.

The feel is slightly thin with a higher level of carbonation than perhaps should be with the style.

Overall, at $1.50 a bottle in my local single shop, I'd rate this as one of the best bargains in craft beer.
