This place defines the term "hit or miss."

Here is the back story as I have heard it:

Mellow Mushroom operated many franchises in Athens but as they grew and began to use more frozen ingredients (e.g. pizza sauce), they lost several franchises. Regardless of whether that story is true or not, all Mellow Mushrooms in Athens closed and this place seemed to simply change names. The food is the same and the owner has used the opportunity to increase his homebrew tastings.

They have one of the largest number of taps in Athens (~25 maybe) and almost all good beers: Unibroue, Sweetwater, Brooklyn, Terrapin, etc. They have a pretty damn good bottle selection too but be careful as some of their beers are likely to be expensive. Also be careful with the rarer of the beers as there is no telling how long it sat in the cooler.

The food is typical mellow mushroom food, yummy pizza and subs. I don't believe the menu has changed at all actually.

On a side note, a new mellow mushroom has opened in town and apparently has some good brews. I have yet to visit.

I had lunch here at about 4pm. There were maby three other people in the place at the time so it was quiet and the service was really great. The atmosphere is that of a semi-dive neighborhood pub. It was a nice place to have a quiet lunch, at least at 4pm, but I get the impression that it would be loud and crowded on a Friday or Saturday night.

I had a pizza w/ sausage and mushrooms. The crust was especially good and the toppings were about what I would expect from your standard "mom and pop" american pizza place. It wouldn't stand a chance against real Italian pizza, but it is as good as anything I have had in the US.

The tap selection was quite good. I think they had about 30 beers on tap and it looked like quite a few bottles as well. They did have Bud light and heavy, but you can't really blame them in a college town, and other than those two everything was at least respectable. They even had a couple of things that you don't usually see on tap in the South such as Saison Dupont. I had a Terrapin IBA and a Brooklyn Lager (both good pizza beers) and they were both fresh and quite good.

Overall I was very pleased with this place, especially considering I didn't look it up on beerfly and just chose it randomly while walking through downtown Athens.
