500ml bottle

Pours with a deep browny/reddy body, cloudy and fairly fizzy with lots of little bubbles of carbonation.Off white head with good retention, some nice lacing down the glass

Smell, bready malt, some slight alcoholic tinged esters, biscuity aromas

Taste, big malt character, slight alcoholic sweetness lingering on the finish, some english hop presence and some bitterness on the finish

A pretty solid ale from this new offshore Donegal brewery, much better than their other offering

Draught at the Bull & Castle, Dublin. Arainn Rua is a bottle-conditioned Red Ale (a red ale that has nothing to do with Killian’s) that weighs in at 5.2% but has the complexity of a much stronger brew. It is sweet and complex, peaty, hazel-nutty, and bubbly. As a blind pick, it was amazing with the dessert. The bottle-conditioning gives it a certain resemblance to the Old Speckled Hen, or certain Belgian ales. A definite classy edge here. The bottle enticingly says, a "secret essence of Arainn Mhor ingredient" is added. I wonder if it’s not some sort of herb, or perhaps heather -- contributing to the sweet, peaty earthiness that’s present. This is an excellent, excellent ale, perhaps my new favorite Irish beer, overall.

Tasted this 500 ml bottle on 28.01.07 best by 17.08.08.
The appearence was a slightly hazy light red/brown body with a fine foamy white head.
Very little smell apparent; some subdued hoppy freshness.
The taste was a bit hard to describe; kind of hoppy copper taste with nutmeg in the background. The taste grew on me as I drank the bottle. Alcohol well disguised.
Coming in at 6% ABV, this is a brave effort for an Irish micro and it works very well.

Shared this 500ml bottle with some friends after picking it up at Redmonds in Ranelagh.

Nice pour with two finger head that didnt stick around too long. The smell was sweet and carried through to the beer as well. As with the previous Árainn Mhór beer I tasted, this brew seemed to grow on me the more that I drank.

Happy to see an Irish brewery making their own beer (edit-this beer is actually brewed in Belgium.) A nice example of an Irish Red Ale that I will definitely try again-maybe an entire bottle for myself.
