Good place for beer and visiting with friends if you are near the university. The location is about a 3 minute walk from the University of Sheffield Information Commons. Food isn't the best. Rather good bottle selection and a sometimes interesting, but small, draft list.

As other reviews have said, this is about 15-20 mins walk from main Railway Station (Or blue line tram and get off at West St and 2 mins walk)

Big barn of a place right in the Student area and adjacent to Hallem University. I thought the interior attractive for its size and plenty of seating, though could imagine it being very busy in evenings when students in residence or football matches on. Great beer selection both on hand pull, plus imported beers on tap, and big selection of bottled imports, though a bit pricey.

Food menu looked good, though considered it a bit costly, but not having seen any, cannot really judge.

Would certainly visit again, and do Kelham Island at same time (another 2 trams stops and 10 min walk)

The Devonshire Cat is a large modern pub situated in the City Centre off West Street a walkable distance from the main Sheffield Railway station and West Street Tram stop.

The pub has 12 hand pumps and a beer menu featuring bottle beers from around the world, a large selection of Belgian, German and US beers as well as other exotic locations. On my visit i drank Kelham Island Pale Rider and Devonshire Cat Bitter both on handpump.

The Cat is in a largely student area and also gets busy when the local football teams are at home (the pub also has football special offer menu's on matchdays). The food is good quality and reasonably priced. Worth a visit if only for the bottled beers!

My wife and I just returned from a conference at the University of Sheffield Yesterday. I had planned to hit four or five (real ale) pubs in the area; however we spent four out of our five nights (in Sheffield) at the Devonshire Cat. Although the overall atmosphere of the place wasn't as "traditional" as other English Pubs, it made up for it with the quality of their ale and the friendliness of its staff. During our four nights there I had three pints of real ale every evening (plus three half pints for lunch on our last day) without having the same thing twice. By our last day there the bar tenders knew where our seats were without asking. If we lived in the area, I'd be happy to be a regular there. Not only was their selection of real ales wonderful, but more importantly the staff there seemed to know how to care for their casks. Every pint was as fresh as the last, and when one bar tender encountered a problem with one of the casks, he quickly went to a back room (where I assume the casks are kept) and quickly fixed the problem. I'd recommend this place to anyone lucky enough to be in the area.

Visited Sheffield for my mates daughters 21st Birthday, this was deemed to be the meeting place before we walked to a booked meal somewhere close.

Great selection of cask and bottled beers, huge walk in, see through fridge for the bottles (staff only) and a good long bar for the handpulls. Staff overworked and not enough of them on my early Saturday evening visit.

Very modern design, which I can't claim to be a big fan of. However, if you have a room as big as a barn, open plan with loads of tables and chairs, with bench seated alcoves at one end, seems like a good idea.

Mostly student types, apart from pockets of older people and our party of really older citizens!

Visited this pub/bar three times during my recent trip to Sheffield, thanks to the kind recommendation of RichLightweight.

This freehouse is situated right next to the Victoria Hall of Univ. of Sheffield, thus the atmosphere is genuinely young and vibrant. At the first sight I wasn't sure whether it was the right place for good ales at all, as it even looks a bit like a chain pub from the outside, with its (semi-) open-plan seating, plenty of TV screens, game machines, etc. But once getting inside the pub, I was immediately attracted to a glass-covered, refrigerated storage displaying well-selected foreign bottled beers on the shelves, in total 80-100 to satisfy all kinds of palates. Sitting at a corner of this showcase are two real ciders (both from Saxon) on stillage, both covered with cooling jackets--a good sign for a serious pub, surely?

After getting to the main bar, any bit of doubt that still lingered in my head was completely dispelled~~ 11-12 handpumps serve 5-6 permanent ales (Devonshire Cat Best Bitter, Pale Rider, Deuchars IPA, 2 Abbeydale beers, and Old Peculier) and 6 rotating guest beers, and 10-11 taps do European draught beers incl. Liefmans Frambozen... I tried quite a few real ales there, incl. my favourite Thornbridge Jaipur IPA and Abbydale Absolution, all in very good, if not perfect, condition.

Although the service is provided by mostly young student staff, they all seem to know quite well how to pour a nice pint, and provide (pretty) efficient and (quite) friendly service. The only downside is that the non-smoking and smoking areas are not separated clearly, and music sometimes could be loud. But judging from the varieties of beers and relaxing atmosphere this freehouse has to offer, I must say this is a seriously good pub well worth a visit on anyone's pub crawl in Sheffield.

Note: Perhaps because this bar is frequented by students, it's open from 11 or 12 am till late at night, unlike many other great but traditional Sheffield pubs that still close for three-four hours in the afternoon. So this bar might be a suitable port of call to fill the gap between visits to other more traditional ones. Nearest tram stop: West Street.
