Stopped by this whole foods on a visit to my grandparents house in San rafael. Given that many whole foods have some great selection I decided to stop in and see what I could find. As I proceded to the cooler I noticed that there was only one cooler of beer, which for a whole foods seemed rather small. Looking around there honestly wasnt much, no Pliny or Blind pig, a few good CA IPA's for moylans and lagunitas, but for the most part pretty lackluster. Ended up walking out with an 08 BCS which was a nice find but overall I dont think its worth the visit.

I went to this store to grocery shop for a 4-day, 3-night trip to Lake Berryessa. Based upon other reviewers's comments and my prior visits, I wasn't expecting much. But, I was pleasantly surprised to find a few gems.
They had Blind Pig IPA and Pliny the Elder, which I bought. I had given up hope of finding these in Marin County after striking out at the Mill Valley Whole Foods and the Greenbrae Beverages and More store. As an added bonus, I scored a 2008 Bourbon County Brand Stout.
The only complaint I have about this store's beer selection is that it's too small. Service is also nearly non-existent. But they have some good beer.

This is my local Whole Foods. Time for a BeerFly review.
The San Rafael Whole Foods is in the eastern part of San Rafael. This place can be quite a madhouse and parking can be rather tough.
The beer selection is extremely tiny. The beer area is right next to the wine and cheese. They carry a few six packs and a few random bombers. They carry most of the usual NorCal brewers, but typically only carry one or two from each brewer's collection. They have a few Belgians and Euro offerings.
The service is nothing to write home about. Their Mill Valley store carries Russian River and I was told they would begin carrying PTE. They had it once when I went there and it quickly sold out. When I returned to get more, I was given some lame excuse that they wouldn't be carrying it any more and wouldn't say why.
I typically avoid this store because the selection is so small. Everything they carry can be found at a better liquor store. I will say their prices are very fair, but the Mill Valley store has a better selection and gladly carry Pliny.

The San Rafael Whole Foods is probably the smallest I've been in and the beer selection isn't nearly what other Whole Foods are like.
They have a good well focused selection that includes some Belgians, some Micro, some local and some better international Macro. You will find something good here but if you're used to a huge selection at Whole Foods, this one is a little lacking. They'll have things like Allagash or Rochefort but not any small batch local beers.
As a result, I'd rather hit one of the better local liquor stores than the corporate machine.
