On tap in a pint glass at the Smokehouse on 4/11/11

1/4th inch cap of bubbly foam starts to swirl, leaving the center and continues morphing for a few minutes. Interesting. Deep copper and rust-colored. Cloudy.

Hints of booze show briefly, then filling out with a malty aroma. Lofty dark fruit notes - plum and a bit of raisin. Spot of apple juice. Candied malt and some floral hops. A little bit bread, a little bit caramel. Very faint cocoa at times.

The flavors progress in an odd fashion. Bread and watery caramel gives way to a lackluster mid-section with a neutral dark fruit and hop presence. Some earthy bitterness. The finish gets strange - medicinal, almost sterile, plasticine finish.

The finish really drags it down; not only does it taste bad, it's also waxy and coating. The middle is hot, too. Medium-full body with carbonation a hair on the side. Gritty and dry at times.

Unfortunately, this is all over the place; hopelessly unsettled at this point. This was a collaboration between the old brewmaster and the new guy. As such, it's either a most discouraging or hopeful suggestion as to the future of Barley's. I'm just not sure which.

Pours a darker amber, with some ruby shades. Off white head sticks around for a few minutes and leaves a few spots of lace.

Toffee, chocolate and some ripe fruit come to mind. Some earthy hops in the background.

Rich malt character, toffee and caramel. Milk chocolate, with a slight dark ripe fruit feel.

Medium body, fine carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden. Very drinkable and nice.

A great looking beer. Deep crimson, opaque, cloudy and what seems like sediment particles floating around yet I may be imagining that. Small to no head.

Nose not as good as the appearance but still not bad. Toffee with some date, and fig qualities. Very English smelling with earthy malts and hops.

Damn tasty and totally english in style, which I love!. Some sweetness on the finish with big toffee, milk chocolate, caramel, bready and biscuity malt, creamy on the mouth than a bit gritty on the finish. Earthy hops with dried pitted fruits in the middle and into the finish. Way to easy to drink and the style of beer I'd love to have endless in my glass.

Ahhhh. Barley's final beer bearing Scott Francis's fingerprints. Say it isn't so....

Tuck's Fury pours a dark caramel or nut brown color. It's quite hazy, and has brilliant crimson highlights with backlighting. Really attractive color. The head is vanilla and covers just above the surface. It recedes rather quickly, leaving a trail of light, stringy lace behind.

The nose is quite good. It smells like a mix of caramel and chocolate malts initially. The chocolate variety is very cocoa-esque. There's a hint of toasted malts and earthy notes that follow. At the secondary level, there's a little dark fruit. Smells like plum. It's subtle, but adds some nice depth. It definitely smells somewhat acidic. Alcohol is masked extremely well and isn't noticeable at all. This one has all the bells and whistles of a nice Old Ale and smells good.

The flavor is likewise impressive. The malt base is very sturdy and substantial. It's a mix of caramel and chocolate. It's slightly sweet and has a nice cocoa flavor. There's a light toasted malt flavor that fits nicely into the mix. Dark fruit is very subtle and light, but effective. It adds an acidic, slightly tangy twist that complements the other flavors extremely well. Alcohol is not strong at all. It's blended very well. Finishes malty with a slight tangy, acidic aftertaste. Pretty impressive.

Tuck's Fury has a body that's on the lighter side of medium. Carbonation is light and helps smooth it out quite a bit. Goes down smooth and easy. Drinkability is very good. I really like the flavor, and it goes down far too easy. A growler might be a little tough to tackle in an evening, but damage could be done.

While Columbus doesn't have a thunderous presence in the craft beer world, Scott Francis does have such a presence in the Columbus beer world. Tuck's Fury is quite a fitting farewell from Mr. Francis. Is it his best beer? No, but it is what Scott Francis is all about - it's a very tasty English style beer. As an Old Ale, it's nice - full of strong, malty notes with just enough of a tangy twist to make things interesting.

Scott Francis, the city of Columbus, Ohio shall be indebted to you forever. You've been the force behind the craft beer scene in this town for years. Tuck's Fury is just another fine example of the legend you're leaving behind. Thanks for all that you've done! I raise my glass of Tuck's Fury to you!
