Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is a very dark, almost black coloring with brown highlights and a bubbly, sparse, tan surface coat of head. Aromas of bitter roasted coffee, subtle grain spice, hints of chocolate, and caramel highlights. Flavors are pretty coffee-centric, with a blast of bitter coffee bean, hints of char, bittersweet chocolate, and spiced grains. The rye sharpens the bitterness quite a bit. Smooth and dry in mouth, with a roasted coffee rich and bitter aftertaste on a dry, lingering finish. Decent brew.

Appearance: A nice bubble show produces a three-fingered head that squats on the translucent coffee-colored liquid; ruby highlights appear at the edge; an impressive coating of lace leaves a curtain as well as some strands

Smell: Toasted bread, rye grains and a hint of chocolate

Taste: Toasted grains with chocolate, up front, with a spicy rye character developing after the swallow; husky, in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A fair amount of flavor in a relatively low ABV beer though I would prefer this one if there was a bigger malt bill that would give it a thicker mouthfeel
