look: 3.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance: Arrives with a ruby tinged mahogany color with an unimpressive head; no lacing to speak of

Smell: Toasted rye bread with hints of brown sugar

Taste: Rather malty, with rye toast, brown sugar and a touch of caramel; subtle peppery bitterness arrives in the middle, but the profile is really focused on the malt

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Once you realize that this beer really is about the malt and not the hops it becomes much more enjoyable

Had on tap at Sessions a few nights back.Poured into an imperial nonic a deep ruby red with a thinner off white head atop, really liked the rich clarity of the pour.Aromas were mainly of brown sugar, toast, and a smattering of sharp rye but the brown sugar stood out most.Flavors of sweet bread dout and caramel malts with a little more the toast,a decent sharpness from the rye hits in the back end. Most American rye beers I have had lean in the hopped up side of things, this amber rye leans in the malt direction and isn't bad at all.

On tap at the brewery's tasting room

Pours an amber with one finger of thick head. Smells of malt and faint rye. Initially this beer is sweet and citrusy then a little bitterness shows up in the end. I don't notice any rye at first, it shows up only faintly as the beer warms. This beer was a little over carbonated for me making it lighter bodied than I expected.

on draft at beer study in chapel hill. into a snifter. 5.55% ABV

pours a dark red with an inch or so head. I can definitely detect the rye on the nose, very apparent. the taste is a big split between the rye and typical crisp amber notes . its blended very well and actually very tasty. medium bodied with medium carbonation.

overall very enjoyable rye beer . ill gladly have another.

Poured from my home tap, this one looks great in the glass, with a deep mahogany-amber color and a thick, creamy, foamy, sand-colored head. The aroma is light and fresh albeit usual, with a light citric acidity (primarily lemon) being complemented by some bready malts. The light bready sweetness and subtle bitterness again balance each other in the flavor, but there is also an ashy, almost smoky earthiness, which presumably is contributed by the rye. The contribution isn't substantial, however, and only provides some nuance to an otherwise common flavor profile. The carbonation is a bit high initially, but the texture also gets a bit syrupy in the finish, although not terribly so.

Overall, this is a light and pleasant amber that is plenty drinkable, but only the subtle earthiness from the rye addition sets this apart from any other solid amber ale.
