Very dark, near black pour with 1/2 finger of mocha head. Not much retention. Decent, but thin, lace sheets.

Nose is a nice mix of roast malt and cascade hops. Bit of coffee and chocolate in there too.

Roast hits first, but cascade really takes over strong. Dominates the finish. Coffee and chocolate break through, but roast malt and citrus hops cover them up. Nice and fairly complex.

Feel is about right for the style. Hop resin even sneaks through the darker flavors.

The only thing that brings this down for me is that it was a very limited release and the local shops that got it charged an arm and a leg for it. Hopefully, they'll make it again at a more reasonable price point.

Pours into a standard pint glass a deep chocolate brown with a half finger pillow-like light beige head atop,a nice layer of froth is left after it settles.Cocoa, caramel, and piney hops in the nose but the hops are on the lighter side.Molasses, roast, and bitter chocolate flavors hit up front with earthy and piney hops in the finish, the molasses flavor stands out up against the hops.To me it's a big earthy, hoppy porter but that's not a bad thing. Not bad.

It is black, and what I think at first is some light coming in at the edges around the bottom of the glass is, interestingly, actually a group of floating particulates. The head on this beer, light brown in color, isn't huge but is substantial, resting at nearly a finger's height. Most impressive is that the creamy cap never, ever fades. It leaves sticky, creamy lacing clinging to the glass in patches beneath rings that form wherever it rests.
There's lots of roast in the nose but also lots of pine and floral bitterness. Balance is good, heft is there, and it gets the median between two very different forms the way the style ought to.
There's not a whole lot more to say as far as the flavor except that the roast brings out some bittersweet cocoa and espresso without diminishing the hoppiness. Well done.
The body manages a median between IPA and stout as well, reaching medium with some depth as well as getting some of the brightness of an IPA. It's crisp and pretty smooth, though I think in the effort to even out the body, which must be very difficult, it does thin just a little at about the middle of each sip.

A - black with a huge, brown head that has great retention

S - citrus, faint roasted malt

T - coffee, roasted malts, spicy and herbal hop character

M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is a great blend of dark roasted malts and big hop character. It has impressive balance and yet each flavor has its time to shine. I could drink a lot of this.

Bottle poured nto a Goose Island piny.

Appearance: Pretty much black. Half finger of tan head. Pretty nice retention and some mild lacing.

Aroma: Dark roast coffee malts. Citrusy and herbal hops.

Taste: Dark roasty coffee malts play with a nice subtle citrus flavor with a higher than expected bitterness at 64 IBU's. Getting a decent bitter chocolate lingering on the back end.

Mouthfeel: Smooth almost creamy medium body. Moderate carbonation. Excellent bitterness and a clean roasty finish.

Tap at Macs Steele Creek. A rather thick looking black pour. Finger of light tan head. Laterally stuck to the glass.

Aroma, equal parts hops an roast. Pine and citrus zest. Malt and very light coffee.

Taste, strong anise and herbal/pine presence up front. Bitter dark chocolate malt backbone. A little coffee, more anise and pine finish. The bite lingers quite well, piney anise burps.

Not quite medium body, a bit too thick to be of the refreshing type. Carbonation was almost creamy, this coated the mouth very well. Well balanced and well done.

Dark, nearly black color topped with a nice, sticky tan head. Spotty lace. Roasted malt, coffee, and fruity hops in the aroma with a touch of yeast. Sweet roast, resin, juicy citrus, light esters, and a sturdy bitterness. Medium bodied, slightly oily mouthfeel with prickly carbonation.

Solid...not terribly hoppy, but tasty enough to have a couple.

On-tap at The Bier Garden, Asheville, NC

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a short white head that quickly died down, leaving a thin ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of dark malts and pine resin hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of dark malts along with notes of pine resin hops and roasted malts. It has a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and slightly crisp on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This Black IPA is quite easy to drink but still has a good amount of flavors.

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is jet black, with some sediment throughout. Thin, sparse, off-white head that starts around a half inch and settles into an uneven surface coat. Aromas of chocolate forward, with a solid roast character and some mild hops bitterness. Flavors are roast and char forward, with a campfire feel. Subtle bitterness in the backbone, with a pepper spicing and pine pitch profile. Very smoked, but with enough resiny bitterness to balance well. Smooth, mid-bodied, transitioning into a slightly filmy, slightly bitter finish. Smoky, bitter aftertaste lingers on for a bit. Dynamic and layered brew.
