If only it had ferns, it would be a fern bar. This is just not a beer place, much less a destination bar in San Francisco. But we were starving and I remembered the name from BA reviews.

As for the beer, you would have to make an effort to have fewer interesting beers in SF, where every coffee shop and corner bar has at least something fun. On tap is Bud light, Anchor, Guiness, Lagunitas IPA, couple other bowling alley standards. 25 bottles, a couple Belgians, but all common beers.

As a bar, however, it's very comfy. Large and roomy, lots of tables, a big horseshoe bar. Big wall of windows is nice. Music was even pleasant, if you like folky whining. "Cops" on TV, how can you beat it?

Food was decent. Bacon and tomato salad, and tofu and tuna sandwich were pretty good. Sandwiches, burgers, salads, and the appetizers, but well made and reasonably priced. Just east of Polk St. with it's many drinkeries. On the corner of Larkin and Sutter with trolley coaches careening by.

Transcribed from extensive notes dated M, 27 July 2009.

Located on the southeast corner of Divisadero (Viz) and Fulton (you CAN see the street sign in the user-submitted photo), the windowfront wrapped around to provide an ongoing vista of traffic (and time) passing by. The entry was angled to the corner with a line of booth seating fronted by standard tables and chairs along Fulton. A couple of tables and chairs were in front of the short Viz window. The "L"-shaped, rough-hewn, stone-topped bar was at a right-oblique to the door. In the back, up a pair of steps, sat a pool table. As to aesthetics, it was an artiste's dream - lots of paintings, most for sale; a jazzy mural above the pool table and a bottle cap mosaic above the back bar. Also be sure to check out the broken mirror mosaic and paintings. Call me an aesthete. John was my friendly server on that slow afternoon.

Beer: The drafts were very Northern California-centric. 2 from Speakeasy, SNPA, Anchor Steam, and El Toro Poppy Jasper. A total of nine (9) CO2 taps, plus Guinness on N2 and Ace Pear Cider. Twenty (20) bottles, ranging from Chimay, Maredsous, Duvel, Tripel Karmeliet to Lost Coast, Abita and 21st Amendment (in CAN) to Bud and Bud Light.

Worth a visit.

Fly Bar is another of San Francisco's beer/wine only bars that has a decent beer selection but refuses to rotate its draughts. Most creative would be El Toro's Poppy Jasper and I believe they carry a Moonlight brew, but they don't allow for change, and I know that they have recently rejected attempts by Beach Chalet to have their beer sold there. It's a nice place to have a pint, but I really don't like their close minded approach.

On with the review: the atmosphere is hip and loud, and I prefer to go early while I can still get a table... it gets PACKED on the weekend evenings. But one advantage of going early and liking it quiet is that I often make it for happy hour, which is a real treat, maybe the best in the city in terms of food/beer together. During happy hour, I believe it goes until 7, all pizzas are half price. This means $4.5 tops for a whole pizza. Plus, all draughts are a dollar off, so $3. Not bad at all. The pizzas are very tasty and I'm a repeat customer of the BBQ chicken pizza (pesto and mushroom also very good). Other beer selections are scattered well distributed CA breweries like Bear Republic and Lagunitas. The service is pretty slow, IMO, but it's always so damn crowded. There are a couple flat screen tvs in the corners, most often playing soccer (a treat!).

Anyway, over all if I need a quick fill-me-up and a pint and have only $10, this is a great stop before happy hour is over. There's a small pool table that's often available, and plenty of bar seating if you're alone and in the mood to socialize. I've heard plenty of complaints of the one uni-sex bathroom which creates very long lines, but personally have never had a problem getting in and out quickly.

If you're looking for a beer destination... this isn't it, especially not with the Toronado a few blocks around the corner. If you're looking for a great place to meet people, hang out on a weekday night playing pool, or grab dinner and a pint, then head to the Fly. There are few better hangout spots in San Francisco. This is definitely a locals spot, and there's alot of loyalty amongst the regulars. I moved to another part of the city, but I still make it back at least once a week, usually more. The staff is great, you go often enough you don't even think of them as servers but friends handing you beers.

Speaking of bee, the selection will not leave you unsatisfied: La Fin du Monde, Chimary Red, Maredsous 10 and Duvel if you're looking for Belgian styles. A good selection of local brews, and the usual Macros. I'd say about 10 taps and 15-20 bottle selection. Food is damn good, check out happy hour (3:30-6:30 everyday) for half price pizzas and dollar off pints.

The patronage is mid 20's to mid 30's for the most part, sort of the non-judgmental hipster crowd. Keep an eye out for the Mayor of Divisadero while you're there. He'll have a Budweiser in his hand, but we don't fault him, he's bring drinking it for over 50 years...

This really shouldn't be a destination on a beer trip to SF. If you live in the city tho, check it out if you like a classy place with dive-bar familiarity and comfort.
