Served in a tulip glass. Vintage 2011 release poured 07/06/2013.

Appearance: Pours a a slightly hazy brown copper coming off pretty damn dark. The head is a bit thin rising slightly high in the beginning and before a sip settled to less than a quarter inch coming off a light tan with a somewhat orange tint to it.

Smell: A bland yeast that smells very good but lacks a bit of potency.

Taste: A smooth nutmeg with a nice yeast feel. A little sweet purple grape. You can feel a little hit of the alcohol and sugars...me personally I think this is one better suited with dessert or at least make this one your dessert after dinner.

Mouth: It is definitely light to medium carbonation with a sticky sweet yeast. after taste. reminds me a bit of raisin bread at the end.

Overall: Nice pick up not knowing anything about the beer except that it was from Belgium. A little pricey when you think about it but thinking again you spend a lot more for crap at local bars. So this I tell you to grab a glass and enjoy. Salud!

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a super hazy dark brown-mahogany color with a billowy off white head. The head fades rather slowly over time to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of darker fruit smells with lots of plum, raisin, and fig. Along with the darker fruit smells comes plenty of bready and lightly roasted malt smells. Some yeasty smells as well as some other sweet aromas of a caramel and toffee nature come along as well. A bit of spice of coriander and clove as well as a slightly funky like smell come and linger on the nose creating a rather dark and sweet but slightly funky off aroma to sit on the nose.

Taste – The taste begins with a very dark fruit sweet flavor with tons of raisin, fig, plum, and cherry. The sweeter flavors are matched by a bit of a bready and doughy taste with a hint of a chocolate and a bit of roasted malt mixed within. The yeast and spice that were detected in the nose come on more strongly toward the middle of the taste and bring a very nice dimension to the brew, complementing well the sweeter dark fruit flavors of the brew nicely. Some candied sugar flavors and a little bit of a rummy booziness develop on the tongue as the flavors advances, bringing a little bit of warmth to the taste. At the very end, a little bit of earth and a light woody/oaky flavor join the profile which end up leaving a very tasty and somewhat smoother, but robust sweet dark fruit quad flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of thickness and creaminess for a brew of 10 % abv. with a carbonation level that is on the average side as well. The average thickness and carbonation are a nice compromise for the sweeter dark fruit and boozy, oaky, and spiced flavors of the brew and makes for a nice easy drinking, yet slower sipping brew overall.

Overall – This is one quite tasty quad. This one is on the tops of my list. Dark fruity, nicely spiced, and yeasted, with a good blend of a warming taste/feel, but all while maintaining a great drinkability and enjoyability. This is quite a nice quad!!

2010 vintage bottle poured into a Karbach sniffer

Poured super dark with a small, light and tan head that dissapated quickly.

Smells of raisins, figs, and honey.

The taste is fantastic. It's definitely a quad on the tongue; heavy on the palate and a medium amount of carbonation for a 4 year old beer. Thus is a super sweet beer that has a large raisin taste profile, typical but delicious Belgian sugary tatse. I could imagine myself drinking this on a cold winter night with oatmeal cookies after dinner!

After half an hour the raisin taste fades to the background and I get honey and molasses. This had become a very drinkable beer!

This may be worth driving 20 miles back to the shop I bought it from.

Dark and rich, this was recommended in a local beer shop when "the darkest Belgian beer you have" was requested. Surprisingly sweet and syrupy, this isn't a light dainty beer. Quite heavy, but even on this hot summer day it still worked. Overall fantastic.

Pannepot from 2010. Poured into a Corsendonk tulip (the glass that I own that most closely resembles the Pannepot glass).

The crack of the bottle was very promising with a snap hiss. Poured with a massive dark khaki-colored head. Super dark brew, as well. The ale is dark brown/purple. Burgundy hues. The foam laces. The look is amazing.

Definitive malty breadiness with a pumpernickel-like spice. Hints of baker's chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, earthy roast, and nuttiness. Obvious phenols with medicinal notes. Herbal, also. Very good.

There are more fruits that pour out in the flavor, but it's definitely a roasty dark quad. Caramelized sugars, molasses, and roastiness overtop of lightly vinous black grape, clove, and raisin. The body is very solid, medium-full. Lots of carbonation still residing in this bottle. The conditioning works. A much coarser bubble than I expected.
