Pours about as dark and dirty as a quad can be without being a stout in quad name alone. A lot of yeast gives this is a nice thick cloudy and near black appearance. A nice bit of carbonation to start but poured into a chalice and I don't see any lacing or retention from the head.

Molasses, clove, dark fruits, and a bit of acidity that seems a bit high for this style.

A very acidic quad giving off dark fruits, molasses, brown sugars, and some grapes (no raisins nor a wine like flavor).

The body is a bit thin and not very creamy.

I'm not sure I get the hype on this one but it's a nice enough beer. It's pricey and I'm not seeing myself buying again unless I stumble upon a really vintage bottle. This being a 2011 served in 2013.

2011 vintage. Lot 2015190511-24FF.

Pours an opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, molasses, dark fruit, spice, and slight cardboard aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, toffee, molasses, fruit, and roast flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness and a slight alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with an interesting mix of aromas and flavors all around.

A: Dark Brown opaque with a slight amber tinge, a finger of creamy chocolate milk brown head with a distinct orange tinge.

S: Chocolate, as in a milk chocolate, dark fruits like figs and raisins, a salty brine of an ocean breeze, black liquorice.

T: Dark fruits, cherries, light sour note, white snow (as opposed to yellow snow) ends in a distinct salty taste and black liquorice. The combination is reminiscent of Dutch salty licorice. It unfolds with every sip. I got a metallic tinge on the second sip (a hint of ammonia perhaps as the salty licorice uses this as a component). The salty licorice becomes more dominant with each sip.

M: Thick body that might be sticky except the creamy foamy carbonation makes it smooth and silky.

O: Awesome! I got this in December 2013 in Bruges, just off the main square at De Struise’s personal store. I went to the actual brewery near Westvleteren earlier that day, and was disappointed as it was closed. Bruges was all set in Christmas lights as it was nearing sunset. Great memory! Enjoying this for the first time April 3, 2014.
