Above average tasting beer again from Struisse. Pours light translucent orange with some white head, that later leaves lace teasting in the glass. Soft mouthfeel, with after tongue tingling. Orangey citrus flavour. Slightly below average smell of the spice. Nicely drinkable blend.

Refreshing in its soft tartness and earthen with grain and hop- the overall character of this Belgian wheat beer is less reliant on perfumy notes or citrus notes- but allows for a minerally, earthen, and spicy yeast tone that's normally reserved for farmhouse ale.

Highly carbonated (perhaps obnoxiously so) the ale pours an eruptive bright straw color but with a modest soft hazy glow. As the foam settles into a mousse visual texture it looks rocky and stubborn. Very well defined- the foam laces remarkably while the beer recedes.

Its understated perfume and earthen tones align softly on the nose- sweet grains, light bread, orange and lemon peels, and the soft herbal presence of coriander, lemon pepper, and straw act in complement to the malt sweetness. But to taste, the flavors are sharper, crisper and drier. Its grainy-sweet taste is short lived as the beer turns more Saison-like with a dry peppery middle. A strong minerally finish iron and maybe even blood-like with a hint of cilantro-type vegetable and soap character.

Its body is mid-light with a quick finish of snappy and mineral crispness. Its a zestier and more abrasive ale than is typical. Lightly bitter and mildly astringent, the ale surpasses drinkability and goes to battery acid to close.

With a much more rustic and spicier tone, this Witbier carries an "old-world" character that's charming and inviting- but its strong iron properties seriously impede drinkability and enjoyment.

Finally available locally, this is a good sign of things to come.

Pours a medium yellow-orange that more resembles opaque orange juice once the yeast is poured in. Initial burst of sudsy foam, 3-4 fingers high. This settles to centimeters of skim, but sticks around.

Airy, spritzy on the surface, carrying aromas of grassy wheat and white grapes.

Prickly mouthfeel at first, lessened with a few swirls of the glass. Juicy, tart grape, light bitter orange peel, and fairly light on the spice. A papery malt and light wheatiness comes out in the aftertaste. It has character, and has a touch heavier body than many other Wits. Approachable, with a mild tartness that's very refreshing.

Sun-bleached goldenrod topped by a huge expanse of eggshell colored foam that almost overflowed the glass. Crackly heads rarely look very good, last very long, or leave much lace. This one is okay on all three fronts, but is certainly nothing to get excited about.

The nose is strangely subdued. Tart fruit is uppermost, with very little of the orange peel and coriander that define the style. I find it interesting that even when all 11.2 ounces of beer are poured, the liquid is still barely hazy. Did they filter out the good stuff?

Witte's flavor follows the nose in that it's mostly unripe fruity, with much more sour lemon peel than sweet orange peel. A major problem is that there isn't enough malt to provide any sort of balancing sweetness or to provide a halfway decent mouthfeel. Corinader is next to absent as well.

Even keeping style in mind, the beer is too thin and easily reaches watery on the finish. Not only that, but the carbonation, while not abundant, has a harshness that more malt sugars might have helped to soften.

I expected delicious things from Struise Witte since De Struise Brouwers are responsible for some of the most highly regarded beer on planet Earth. I've had plenty of wits from barely known American craft breweries that could run rings around this stuff. Another bottle may be in order, in case this one isn't representative.

another nice tasting throwdown tonight down by the lake. brought some nice ones i needed to try and this one was one of the first.

it poured a bright hazy yellow with a nice two inch or so white head on top. Nice retention gave way to a good amount of lace. Lots of visible carbonation was apparent. Smell was full of wheat and yeast, very light with little in the way of any floral quality to it. The taste was decent enough, light grain mixed in with a touch of yeast, a little bit of a banana or some kind of kick in the in, with a smooth, and well carbonated light body to it. Overall not too bad, I have had better and I have had worse. It was average at best but no worse then that,. I could have had another easily as they were like water. An average witbier for me

33cl bottle of standard brown glass with pressure cap served into a weissbier glass in a hostel in Amsterdam. Reviewed live.

A: 3.5 finger head is thin, devoid of cream, and retains well. Colour is a cloudy murky dark yellow. No visible yeast.

Sm: Lemon, biscuit, and bland citrus hops. A mild strength scent.

T: Lemon and citrus esters. Some heavy malted barley comprises the foundation. Some unwelcome cream is also present. Balanced but poorly built.

Mf: Smooth and wet, complementing the flavour. A bit too wet.

Dr: Easily drinkable, but highly priced and of limited quality. I'd have it again at a lower temperature, but as is, it's the first disappointment I've had from Struise.

Picked this up at West Lakeview Liquors recently Lot B-3-BB, whatever that means. Served in a pilsener glass.

A - Pours with three fingers of soapy white foam that dissipates pretty quickly and leaves a splotches of lacing and a decent cap. Lightly hazed, but mostly transparent, golden straw body, with tons of bubbles racing upwards and sticking to the sides of the glass.

S - Belgian yeast, candi sugar, lemony citrus, honey and spices. There's a bit of sourness and funkiness that I'm not 100% certain is intentional, but it's a nice touch. Maybe a touch medicinal as well. It's a little more complex than a typical witbier.

T - The taste is much more conventional, with some light lemon zest and spices, and a malted wheat backbone. The aftertaste has a little bit of graininess to it. Urbain calls this a lawnmower beer, and I'd have to agree. Simple, yet satisfying.

M - Lively, active carbonation. Extremely dry finish, with maybe a touch of stickiness in the finish.

D - I could drink a ton of this, if not for price and availability. The carbonation, while tingly, isn't overboard, the ABV is low, and the finish is very dry and clean.

33cl into a matching De Struise cervoise. I loved this beer to death when I had it on draft so I didnt hesitate in getting some bottles when the opportunity arose. I should have paid closer attention because this bottle I am opening for this review is old. Like... older than it should be for a wit. The label is different from the one listed here, instead of yellow, it is blue and very faded, scratched up and downright falling apart now that I look at it closer. The best before code on the side of the label is different from the normal struise labels I am use to seeing that have been imported by Shelton bros. I assume this to be best by 2013 putting this at a 2008 vintage possibly? The brew appears a very clouded color of yellow to golden with a solid 2 fingers of white froth that fade slowly leaving spots of lace clinging all over the glass.

The aroma opens up with a seemingly perfume-like lemony aspect. It is chalk full of yeasty notes mixed with some herbal and earthy components. Wheat tartness is somewhat evident with a blending of grain and then as it opens up, there is a bit of apple cider note coming into play. The taste includes a tart wheat character with hints of lemon and coriander with almost an oily touch. There is a bitterness here somewhat more exaggerated than i was expecting for a wit but it does a decent job contrasting the lemony aspect and the tart wheat presence.

This is a medium to lighter bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is light and easy drinking with the expected lemony aspects and wheat inclusion. I am a bit surprised by the herbal components and hop bitterness that is present. This is certainly a 180 degree turn from my experience of having it on tap. it is good in it's own right, just not at all what I was expecting based on previous experience. I guess it is understandable knowing the difference of draft version bottle conditioning and considering this specific bottle might be several years old.

A big pour into my Cantillon Tulip glass produces a big, frothy, pale tan colored head. The beer is quite hazy, even opaque and is gold colored with the white sheen required of a Wit beer. The aroma has a nice yeasty, earthy character to it and there is a nice pear-like fruitiness that is backed by hints of coriander and perhaps a touch of baby vomit (that wild Struise character). As the beer warms up the coriander becomes more noticeable.

As the beer first hits my palate it tastes earthy and feel cools and crisp. There are some nice orange zest notes as well as coriander flavors that intermingle with a soft sweetness and a very, very firm bitterness (especially for a Wit). There also seems to be a pronounced (again for a Wit), herbal hop character to this brew. Hay like grain notes as well as some cracker like malt start to come out as the beer warms up.

This is quite an interesting interpretation of a Wit; the hop character in this beer has really piqued my interest and really sets the beer apart from other Wits. Quite nice and I am definitely enjoying this.

Very well carbonated, the beer pours with a frothy, easily four-finger thick, light tan colored head (the head is actually darker than one would expect in a typical Wit). Without the sediment the beer is an almost clear, full gold color. The aroma is lemon like up front, but has a grain-derived grassiness, a touch of bright coriander and a touch of crushed malt aromatics mixed in. Mostly the lemon-like citrus character is noticeable.

The beer is quite dry up front and it immediately foams up as it hits my tongue. The combination of the light body and ample carbonation almost make this beer seem airy. Tart, with notes of lemon zest being prominent throughout the flavor profile. A very soft spiciness (other than the citrus) is just barely perceptible; perhaps contributing notes of white pepper, Japanese pickled ginger, and a hint of earthy / grassy coriander, and something like stinging nettle that adds a touch of green / vegetal character around the edges. The light malt character also contributes a touch of hay or grass.

This is really the consummate summer refresher, it is so light and refreshing that I could almost see drinking this instead of water, which is a rare comment from me when talking about beer. This has very little palate impact, and I would guess that trying to pair this with any type of food would completely swamp the subtle flavors of this beer.

Pours a slightly hazy golden with a very finely beaded pure white head that sticks around as a thin cap. Smells of orange cream, a spritz of lemon, and a touch of coriander. Definitely a bit unusual for the style, both in aroma and taste, but really quite nice. The taste is a bit sour for a Wit, and really tastes nothing light the smell. You'd really expect a lot more sweetness in the flavor based on the aroma. There is still some of the lemon spritz, but the sourness is almost acetic. A touch of cream and coriander remains as well, but the orange is gone. The taste is a bit floral as well. Fairly light in the mouth and a bit sour. Pleasant porch drinking brew.

Appears a transparent, light gold with plentiful streams of carbonation quickly rising to the top of the creamy, 1 finger, white head. The foamy cap never falls out. Scattered speckles of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of lemon zest, rummy sugar, spicy dough, and perhaps a tiny amounts of caramel drizzled on white bread.
Taste is of raisin (white)bread minus the abundance of brown sugar. There is also a honey & citrus flavor that is highlighted by the freshly squeezed lemon qualities found zinging along the tastebuds.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, zesty, mildly spicy, with tartness leading to a somewhat dry finish.

A- This beer pours a crystal clear body of pale warm yellow on the first pour. The super thick snow white head last and last turning rocky after a bit. With the last half of the bottle poured in this beer turns very hazy. There are still strands of tiny bubbles seen trailing up the sides of the glass.

S- The soft light smell of yeasty bread dough has a nice soft spice hint and a green herbal finish.

T- This beer has a soft wheat dough flavor with a slight tartness that is like faint white wine vinegar. There is a soft hint of brie cheese blended with a green hop note at the finish. As this beer warms there is a nice faint sweetness and citrus zest flavor with a note of butterscotch coming though aswell.

M- This beer has a medium-full mouthfeel with a tight fizz that really crisps up the finish nicely.

D- In a world of bland wit beer after wit beer this one shines through. It has some nice subtle twist to it and has some wild hints to it aswell.

Cloudy and hazy. Dull bronze body. The white head is fluffy and airy....and it sticks around for a while. Aroma is nice and fresh. Belgian yeast, lemon zest, lavender and orange. The flavor is pretty dry and herbal like. Not a lot of sweet traits to be found. Spicing is moderate with a little corriander or something similar. Sour lemon is present. A definite tangy aftertaste. This is o.k. Nothing I'd need to seek again for the price.

Picked this up at Five Points Bottle Shop in Athens, GA.

Pours a hazy lemon-yellow color with a one-finger bright white head. The head dissipates quickly into a wispy layer on top leaving hardly any lacing.

Smells of lemon zest with hints of spices. As the beer warms a bit of barnyard funk comes out as well.

Tastes similar to how it smells, although the flavors aren't as strong as I was led to believe from the smell. The lemon flavors hit first, both sweet and tart, then very light spices, then a dry finish. As with the smell, a slight funk comes out as the beer warms.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a good thickness with solid carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I could have a lot of these on a summer day - not too much going on but very refreshing.

Overall this was a good wit - not great, but certainly good. Worth a shot.

11.2oz bottle shared with Carlo at De Struise...Pours a light hazy gold that is still semi clear. A light off white head, light and fades pretty quickly with light lacing...The aroma is yeast, lemon, spice, and a touch bitter. Its not the typical wit aromas, nice originality but not entirely working for me...The taste is light lemon, spicy, yeast, has a very champaign like quality from the yeast and dryness of the drink. The finish to harsh and dry for me, so despite its intent as a crusher beer its a tad difficult for me to drink.

Not my fav De Struise beer, I'd skip it next time around.

33cl bottle poured into my large Gulden Draak tulip, Struise Witte is a hazy straw yellow with a very large, fluffy white head, that is almost painfully flow to recede, leaving moderate lace.

Smell is phenomenal, sweeter, spicy, floral hops, fruity esters, just very appealing to me, lots of aroma without overpowering.

Taste is a bit of a let down after the aroma, a little to grassy hops, not as much floral and fruitiness, sour wheat tang. While I'm happy to not be overwhelmed by the spices and orange peel, I could use a little something more. Perhaps if the aroma was so appealing to me, the taste would seem better, as there's really nothing wrong with it, pretty standard witte.

Mouthfeel is moderately carbonated and drier, although not particularly crisp, with a lighter body.

Drinkability is pretty good, if only for the aroma.

Ok beer. Poured with a white head that quickly faded to a small amount on the surface and almost no lace. Color is hazy medium amber. Aroma is different: yeast, leather, earth, wood, and malt. Flavor is malt, tart, bread, yeast, and cookies. Interesting play between good carbonation and softness in the body. Decent finish. Could maybe be a session beer. Don't really pick up the spices touted on the label.

This one as well as the Dutch version of Pannepot arrived at the beer store last week.

A: Pours a hazy golden yellow color with a towering head. The head dies down nicely to half a finger and hangs around until the end.

S: Very natural smelling. Citrus, yeast rolls, and wet hay. There is a hint of spice in there as well. Coriander I believe.

T: A little different than the other wheat’s I have had there is defiantly a Belgian twist. The citrus is there front and center. It gives way to a mild spiciness before you are treated to a citrus finish. There is a mild underlying biscuity sweetness that you tend to find in Belgian brews. Makes it a little different than your average wheat brew.

M: Light and sparkling. Refreshing.

D: I enjoyed the bottle, but one was enough. I have had better Wit's before.

Overall: A nice mild and refreshing brew. The citrus taste is wonderful and the spices used and malty sweetness makes this beer a bit different. I enjoyed it. Since there are only 6 reviews, I guess this one is pretty rare. It was nice to give it a try.

Reviewed on 3/16/08. Bottle. Poured a light yellow with a small white head, pretty carbonated. Aroma of light fruits (apple, pear, citrus). Taste of the same light fruits also some darker fruits like plum. The taste also had lots of spice that really complemented the beer and didn't overpower it. A nice blend of flavors. Very refreshing and very drinkable. I loved this! 7/4/8/4/15 (3.8/5)

Poured from an 11.2oz bottle into a Loterbol tulip.

A: Pours a pale gold color with a creamy white head that quickly settles into a nice, solid one finger. Quite effervescent at first, but fades with time and temperature.

S: Right off the bat, I'm greeted with some citrus. Lemon and orange peel. That leads right into green apple, bread, and some subtle spices.

T: Again, tart citrus blended with slightly sour/tangy apples. Spices, dry toasted malt, and an excellent bready yeastiness.

M: Feels thicker than what I expected. Prickly and bubbly with a nice, long, fruity finish.

D: Loaded with compelling tangyness. Very refreshing!

Single, 11.2 oz bottle copped from State Line Liquors in Elkton, Maryland...
Pours a hazy, cloudy, straw-colored hue with a decent-sized foamy head that quickly receded but left a copious amount of lacing around the glass...
Astringent-like aroma bubbling with yeast, wheat, coriander, spices, and lemons...
"Ale brewed with spices" on the front logo sticker, and those very spices were certainly noticeable in the taste, with a punch of coriander, lemons, citrus, grapefruit, and ripe pears... Spicy taste, which was a little more than what I was expecting from a Witbier...
Good, crisp, clean, rich mouthfeel and a very good level of drinkability due to the relatively low ABV and lack of cloying flavors...
Definitely an interesting take on the style...

Poured from the same 11.2 oz. bottle that I purchased at De Bier Tempel in Brugge, Belgium on or about 6 9 09 for 2.50 Euros. I took it with me all over Italy, finally returning at the end of June.

A Kind of basic moderate yellow translucent body with visible carbonation rising up but no sediment viewed by me. Nice, white, creamy head that stuck around for at least 10 minutes. 4.0

S Nice belgian yeast, malt smell and, thankfully, no hops smelled by me. Some light citrus but really this beer does not have a strong smell. 3.5

T Nice sweet, light syrupy malt taste and some grains but not as much of the wheat taste and no significant spices which I tend to like. Really this beer tastes more like I would call a Belgian Blonde but what do I know? What this beer does have, however, is the by now unmistakable Belgian taste as described above. 3.5

M Moderately smooth but most significant feel is a light syrupy stickiness. 3.5

D Good and if it was any easier to get I could test that theory. 4.0

Notes: I would like to taste a Witte from this brewery (a world class one at that) as an unfiltered version. As it is this is a solid beer, but probably a Blonde Belgian Ale. I have to admit that I was a bit let down after having some absolutely stellar beers from DSB in the past. Coming up are two Pannepot beers though....

Notched 4 BB which I beleive indicates it was bottled in 2006.

A - Pours a pale, slightly hazy yellow with a thin layer of white head that settles to a skim of foam.

S - Tart green apples, white grapes, lemon, hay, coriander and a slightly bready yeast.

T - Sour green apple and white grape mixed with a grassy, lemony citrus and a wheat bready, yeasty flavor. Some wine notes and light spicing are also present.

M - Very carbonated and spritzy feeling in the mouth. Dry finish.

D - I believe I heard in an interview that there is some wild yeast in this one. I assume that is what creates the tart, grape, apple flavors that are a nice change compared to many wits.

I really liked this witbier because of its complexity and very characteristic Belgian qualities. The beer pours a slightly cloudy golden orange with a foamy smallish white head that dissipated quickly. The smell is sweet yeasty malts, Belgian sugars, some florals as well. The taste was very light, easy to drink, refreshing, with a hearty yeasty effervesence, orange rind, coriander, maybe some pineapple. The taste is quite nice, a little on the dry side, and there is sufficient complexity which you will notice as the beer warms and more fruity and citrus flavors develop. The beer is a real treat and well worth seeking out. L'Chaim.

The weather is warm in Holland so this morning i put this Struise witte in my fridge.

Poured it in my Struise glass this evening and the beer is very nice in the glass; a huge white head with an unclear (?) fluid.

Fresh smell and an even fresher taste. This is a nice witbeer from the guys from Oostvleteren
