A - Poured from a 2007 vintage bottle into a Chimay goblet. Pours and has the highlights of dark raisin flesh. A medium, khaki head settles on top before dissipating into a film.

S - Strong sweet aroma of raisins, figs, cherries, malt, toffee and brown sugar.

T - Nice and sweet with a strong malt characteristic. Toffee and dark brown sugar, just a little bit of cherry tart. Potent alcohol taste lingers in the finish.

M - Medium bodied, chewy.

Poured into a bulb glass a deep amber tinged chesnut brown with a thick two finger tannish colored ead that held well.Aromas of deep dark fruit aka...raisins,prunes,and candied orange peel,almost a spiced cake element to it.Flavors again have a spiced cake note to it with some candied fruit,I dont really detect the calvadose barrel aging much though.A very good beer but maybe a bit overrated?

Deep dark murky brown with a thin and bubbly tan head. Aroma is boozy and figgy with some liquorish. Cinnamon and candied sweetness follow. Flavor is sweet and bready with raison liquor and sugary booze. Touches of chocolate. Unbalanced towards booze and sweetness. Off-putting. Slick, boozy feel. Full bodied. Not very pleasing.

This is worlds apart from the Belgian version I love so much. This beer lacks the wonderful spice found in the first version. It's booze, equally pronounced, lacks the depth of flavor required to make it pleasant and its sugars do not add complex raison or fig character but rather detract making this beer too sweet to enjoy.

2006 vintage.

A: Dark reddish brown with a medium-sized pale beige head. Good head retention and nice lacings.

S: Deep and rich malty aromas. Lots of fruity notes (cherries, plums, figs, currants) - this is like a fruit basket! Tagging along the fruits are notes of wood, cola and chocolaty fudge, and wonderful caramel notes. Very vinous. Some spicy yeast. Very complex, almost overwhelming.

T: At first, the taste is very very reminiscent of red wine- fruity notes, wood, earth and spices make for one vinous experience. After a few sips, things get easier to sort out and the red wine character decreases to some extent. Some malts, but not very powerful. Lovely balance of sweet caramel, fudge, and notes of ripe dark fruits (but not as complex as in the smell). Dry woody notes linger on, Belgian yeast, spices and earth. The sweetness is balanced by a gentle tart note that sticks around to the finish. The finish is mildly bitter with notes of well integrated warming alcohol, currants, wood, mild phenols and hints of iron. Beautiful and rich, very well balanced.

M: Surprisingly light with rather high levels of carbonation. The mouthfeel definitely makes the beer dangerously easy to drink.

D: Very good, better than the Grand Reserva version.

2011 Vintage. Poured from the bottle into a chalice.

Pours a deep, nearly opaque brown with a dark tan head that fades away to a dusting on top. There is some obvious sedimentation and a fair number of floaties.

The aroma is quite amazing. Deep and malty sweetness, caramel, toffee, dark dried fruit, leather and yeasty bread all coming through. As it warms a bit, even hints of dark chocolate.

The taste slowly builds on the tongue. there's sweet malt and light fruit up front growing to bitter dark chocolate and dark roast coffee and even hints of soy, although it's understated. As it warms, I get more raisin, even some fresh grape. There is a long lasting dryness on the tongue.

The mouthfeel is quite amazing. It's rich and smooth and creamy with a little bubbly feel as well.

This is a pretty remarkable drinking experience. You must try it. Awesome.

2008 release into a goblet

A - Pours a beautiful deep but translucent mahogany with half a finger of splotchy tan head. Head fades to a collar pretty quickly and leaves only small amounts of lacing.

S - Caramel and toffee, a bit of candi sugar, rum-soaked plum and fig, a bit of cinnamon and pepper. Very inviting aroma.

T - Initially a bit sweet, with candi sugar and caramel, but very quickly the sweetness is balanced with some spices that bring a bit of dryness, plum and a bit of raisin, and some noticeable alcohol. Finishes mostly dry, though there is some lingering sticky sweetness.

M - Initially medium with soem sticky sweetness. Finishes with some dryness.

O - Very enjoyable quad from Struise. There is some apparent alcohol, but it is not detracting in the least. It really works well with the fruits and spices.

11.2 oz bottle, dated 2006. Pours a murky brownish tea color with a thin white head that quickly diminishes to a thin film.

The aroma is sweet brown sugary malts, figs, and a little wood.

The flavor is sweet caramel malts, some dark fruits, earthy yeast and some spices with a light grassy bitterness at the finish. The alcohol is present at the finish, but not overdone. The mouthfeel is medium to full with soft carbonation.

Overall, a nice dessert type beer.

On tap poured into a wine glass. 2008 vintage.

Pours a hazy dark brown with a thin light brown head. Nose is malty, funky and sweet. A bit of booze but not too much.

Taste is amazing. Possibly the best quad I've had. Rich and sweet, super complex and flavorful. Very easy drinking its so smooth and rich.

2008 vintage

11.2 oz bottle at cellar temp poured into an ommegang goblet. bottling code: lot B 4 DD translates to this being bottled in April of 2009, about 2 years in the bottle.

pours a very dark murky brownish red color with about one finger of off white- light biege colored head, slowly faded to a very retentive thick lacey ring and some bubbly patchy foam.

a very fruity aroma. apples, pears, grapes, some dark fruits behind that. some toffee, caramel, bits of dark breads, and some very slightly acidic yeasty notes. some alcohol with just a hint of vanilla and oak.

again lots of fruits, grapes and dark fruits mostly, but also some apples and pears. caramel, fig, vanilla, slight oak, dark breads, cinnamin and hints of other spices. almost a hint funky or something. some sweetness.

medium to heavy in body. carbonation is appropriate. feels a little lighter than it actually is. actually pretty easy drinking, but the alcohol is still there and becomes more warming as the beer itself warms.

i expected just a little more out of this. still decent and very different from a lot of the quads ive had. i have more bottles of this vintage, but i think id want to try this more fresh. im guessing this was aged in wine barrels as it states on the bottle " barrels from france" and there is a pronounced grape aroma and flavor.

2008 Vintage, 11.2oz bottle. Poured into a balloon tulip.

Pours a cola brown. When held to the light, the soft brown flows into red highlights. A thin tan head bubbles up gently.

The nose is a delicate mix of spices, dark fruit, and subtle yeast.

Taste mirrors the smell, except there is a very very slight tart note on the tongue.

Mouth is nice and smooth, drinks great for a great big quad.

Bottle poured into a GI goblet

A - Dark chestnut brown with a slight reddish hue. Looks to have a medium body. Only a small layer of foam sits on top like a layer of moss on a pond

S - Malty nose. It is bready, has dates, figs and raisins, tart cherries, brown sugar, and light oak.

T - Up front, there are dark fruits with dates and figs. There is also bread malt, brown sugar, and light oak. The finish is slightly astringent with light lemon and oak as well as a brandy-like alcohol kick

MF - Creamy body that just rolls and coats the tongue. Low carbonation overall. Finish is slightly astringent with oak and it is warming alcohol that lingers on

O - Great beer. The time in the barrel allows the flavors to mellow out and blend together better than they do in regular Pannepot.

2005 version.

Pours a hazy, rustic brown color with a big off-white head. The head recedes fairly quickly into a thin pancake of bubbles on top that leaves decent lacing.

Smells of booze and Belgian candy sugar soaked fruits - plums, raisins and pears - with hints of spices. I'm not getting a lot of woody aromas, but the spiciness seems toned down a bit from the normal version.

Tastes very good. Belgian candy sugar and fruits join a sweet malt background. Hints of cinnamon and nutmeg come out every now and then.

Mouthfeel is great. This is the biggest improvement over the normal version of this beer in my opinion. It's almost velvety.

Drinkability is good. The sweetness from the Belgian candy sugar isn't overbearing, nor are the spices. This goes down easily, especially considering the 10% ABV.

Overall this is a tasty beer, but for the price I would recommend sticking with the non-Reserva, though if you're curious it's certainly worth a try.

2008 vintage
A- This beer pours a dense opaque brown body with a light sticky tan cream head that leaves register marks after each sip. There is some jetsam of trub swirling around in the body.

S- The aroma of dark candi sugar is soft with a tartness of fruit and red wine tannins to follow. There is a oaky vanilla note that comes through in the finish as the beer warms.

T- The sweet candi sugar is dark and raw with a jam sweetness to it and a cream flavor to follow. The finish is pretty clean from the fizz.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a tight fizz that is full in the finish. There is a creamy texture and a very soft alcohol warmth that hangs on the tongue after each sip.

O- This beer has some nice flavor with a subtle complexity and a soft woody note. There is a nice full sweetness but a little more alcohol to cut it would be nice. There are very faint notes of brett and yeast character that would be nice to taste more of but they just didn't come through.

11.2oz brown bottle poured into a Westmalle chalice.

A: Pours very deep brown with no light shining through. Moderate head on the pour with some retention, mostly holding at a thick skim. Decent lacing.

S: Deep malty aromas with some complex spicing. No definite spices but a pleasant spiciness. Some light sweet aroma in the back, maybe from the oak. Maybe a touch of some blood/metallic. Overall, somewhat subtle.

T/M: Awesome flavor. The signature Pannepot dark spicy malts, almost brown breadish. Some pleasant alcohol that has mellowed and doesn't really have much heat. Moderate yeast profile with a bit of spice. The oak aging isn't huge in this beer and I think I'd actually like to see a bit more. Attentuation doesn't seem as high as much Belgians of this style but it does have just a bit of dryness in the finish. Carbonation doesn't seem quite as high as it should be, and might be causing some lack of dryness.

D: Very tasty beer and I could drink gallons of anything Urbain makes.

Vintage 2008 Lot C 4 DD

Purchased through Lakeview Liquors, Chicago, Illinois

Price - $9.04/bottle

Appearance: A murky reddish brown pours from the bottle with bits of sediment followed by a lite tan head which appears briefly for a moment before fading out and retreating to the edge of the glass. Lacing tries to make a stand but falls slowly back into the liquid sensation.

Smell: The nose is filled with grapes, plums, cherries, spices and wood.

Taste: A near perfect balance between sweet and bitterness. Brown sugar, vanilla and oak. This is where this beer shines.

Mouthfeel: Smooth with a medium to thick body. Very little carbonation almost flat like. Dry in the finish.

Drinkability: Bring it on. At 10% its super smooth and dangerous if your not careful. Though I prefer the regular version over this, it still stands out as another fine offering from a great brewery.

Poured from a bottle into my DFH snifter. 2008 vintage shared with BAs infi, brun, NYManc and several others.

Deep hazelnut brown color fills the glass, coalescing into a translucent hue that lets light filter in very hesitantly. Smallish off-white head leaves a decent coating of sticky lacing as the liquid is swirled around to agitate the aromas. These aromas are of dark fruits, along with a fairly potent alcoholic twinge. Concentrated whiffs reveal vanilla and oak, tempered by the years in the bottle. Quite sweet and quite enticing.

I haven't had this beer fresh, but I can sort of imagine what it'd be like, just from what it tastes like now. The alcohol has definitely mellowed out, but is still prevalent and gives the taste a good bite. There's a complex mixture of flavors that only age can impart, including dried dark fruit, burnt caramel and an earthy oaked quality. It all comes together as a sweetish taste on the tongue, but not overly so. Mild yeasty notes show up on the backend, lending a pleasant breadiness to an already tasty brew. Mouthfeel is very smooth and silky, with just a hint of dryness. Not too much carbonation coupled with a medium body make for an easy drinking experience.

An exquisitely crafted quadrupel. I've thought the few that I've had in the past had a bit too much heat, but this beer strikes a good, age-evened balance and drinks very, very well. Extremely happy to have tried this.

Old Fisherman's Ale aged on Oak, 2010 vintage.

A great, well rounded and rich quadruple. Aroma is a little weak and non-distinctive, just some fruity esters and Belgian yeast. Get some sugar as well. On the palate though it has a great depth of flavor: dark chocolate, old leather, Belgian spice, dark cherry though no tartness, some currant and dates as well. Do not get any oak, maybe just some slight vanilla sweetness.

Very smooth, drinking very well

Poured into St Bernardus goblet
A- poured a dark color with brown highlights. A bit of sediments floating around. Not a big head, but a lingering cream-colored head with near zero lace.
S- sweet bready malts, ripened dark fruit along the lines of raisins, figs, dates.
T- follows the nose, loses some of the fruits. Tastes much better than the 2009. Hardly any heat at all
M- medium-bodied, medium-carbed.
O- as stated earlier, this one really outshines the 2009. Tasted very similar to St Bernardus' Abt 12. This is what I expect a Belgian Quad to taste like!

750 ml bottle from 2006 Vintage. Shared with family a few weeks back.

The beer poured a deep black body with a very thick tan head, fluffy and rich. The beer had a deep earthy nose, some chocolate tones as well. The taste gave me dried fruit up front and then some alcohol tones as well. Very pleasing. There is some subtle but distinct wood notes as well from the barrel aging. This version of Pannepot is an excellent, well balanced and complex beer. I only wish I had tried this bottle along side the other versions of Pannepot. Maybe next time.

2008 Vintage.

A: Pours a hazy purple/brown color with a small off-white head. Very little retention, quickly reducing to a ring on top, sporadic lacing.

S: Extremely heavy in dark fruit and sugar. Lots of raisins, figs, and plums. There is a bit of dark cherry in there too. At the end there is some grape and spices. A little bit of wood coming through.

T: Not as strong and fruity as the aroma lead on, unfortunately. There is still some fruit flavor, but it just seems a bit muted. On the sweet side with some candied sugar and light spices as well.

M: Very smooth, medium bodied. This where this beer shines, its almost velvety smooth.

O: A pretty good beer, just wish the flavor profile lived up to the aroma. Age could have played a factor with that one.

2008 vintage.

For a 3-year-old beer, the head keeps this beer looking lively and fresh...it disappears to a skim pretty quickly, of course, but its mocha color is nice while it lasts. The liquid is a dense, muddy dark brown.

Aroma is a tantalizing, heady mixture of cinnamon, black pepper, coffee grounds, allspice, anise, yeast and alcohol. Nothing spikes out further than the other, all is in balanced accord. Even a bit of pumpernickel emerges with some warming. Smells like a pretty serious beer.

The nose hints at what's to come on the tongue, and does not falsely advertise. All of that is there, with the same balance exhibited in the nose. There's also a nearly astringent herbal essence that comes in, which seems like it must be hops, but with three years for those to fade, it's probably the unrevealed "spice" that the label touts. Some raising and less identifiable dark fruits emerge. The heady, vinous, almost charred-meat character is likely the wood, but even the French oak barrels this was aged in don't exactly scream "barrel" or "wood." There's nothing literal in Pannepot Reserva 2008; all ingredients and brewing techniques take on more interpretive, symbolic characters.

Soft and smooth on the tongue with just a little bit of carbonation caress. With all the complexity and depth of flavor, it's nice that the texture doesn't budge in too thick or cloying. Spice and wood mingle in the finish, with a nearly citrus-like sourness being hinted at but never totally delivered, all keeping the imagination soaring...

Man alive, this is one complex and satisfying beer. Another incredible Belgian delight.

2008 bottle poured into a new belgium glass. Opaque brown with ruby edges, small mocha head with some lacing. Smell is caramel and sweet malt up front followed by wet barrel, sweet tobacco, and a hint of orange peel. Taste is not as big as I thought it would be. Only slightly sweet, caramel malts with a touch of bitterness and milk chocolate coffee. Doesn't have the characteristic quad yeast flavor i was expecting. Long roasty aftertaste and alcohol is very well hidden. Mouthfeel is more like a stout then a quad - medium to heavy and a mild carbonation. A great beer overall, although I am not sure it is completely within the style parameters. As far as the BA style description goes, it fits.

Pours a dark cola color with tan specks of yeast suspended throughout. A small, resilient tan head is present which is reminiscent of froth on top of a cappuccino. I smell toffee, rose, grapes, and caramel. Tastes of raisins, figs, sugary malt, pepper, and finishes with ginger (nice of them to help clear the palate before the next sip). The perfect amount of sweetness, nowhere near cloying. Surprisingly smooth. Creamy with a dry finish. The alcohol is almost entirely hidden. Overall, delicious! It is a complex yet very drinkable quad.

Small tan head, quickly fading. Extremely dark brew straddling the line between brown and black; relatively clear.

Classic quad aroma; prunes dominant; barest hint of dry spices; cola, vanilla, and a bit of oak.

Flavor is a lovely, thick, complex blend of all things Pannepot and oak: prunes, plums, and red grapes; dry spices; notes of creamy chocolate and coffee running throughout; slightly tart and very woody oak; brown sugar and molasses; kiss of vanilla on the finish.

Thick and extremely smooth mouthfeel; nice warming in the chest, but otherwise no real hint of alcohol; lively mouthfeel with no sting or foaming. Long lingering aftertaste, sticky and cloying and sweet.

A fabulous, one-of-a-kind quad, Pannepot again hits it out of the park. Just the right amount of sweetness.

2010 bottle, reviewed Jan 2015. No sign of oxidation whatsoever.
