2008 Vintage

Chestnut brown with a one finger tan head which vanishes quickly and leaves no lacing. The aroma has pears, candi sugar, grapes, dates, oak, and a heavy amount of alcohol.

The taste is just like the aroma. Pears, candi sugar, grapes, dates, oak, and alcohol. It is also sweet and boozy. A lot of alcohol heat in this beer.

Medium to full bodied. Sweet, smooth, decent carbonation, and a lot of alcohol heat. A nice tasting Quadrupel, but far from my favorite of the style. There is too much alcohol heat for my liking.

I suspect I would like the traditional Old Fisherman's Ale better.

Presentation:
The label looks something like a Roman mosaic of a sailboat. It looks very good.

Appearance:
Murky brownish-red. The anemic, mocha-milky head settles into a thin and disparate layer of bubbles.

Aroma:
Hmm, not getting too much out of the nose. Reminds me of toasted whole grain bread and raisins.

Taste:
Complex, uncompromising taste. It seeps deep into the tongue infusing it with the hefty sweetness of dark fruits--plums, raisins, and fig. Dark caramel and warm molasses round out the fruity flavor. It is toasted grain--charred bread crust to be exact--that creates the platform atop which intricate flavor structures assemble, stretch, strive, and erupt into a kaleidoscopic array of flavors. Orange peal, coriander, and ground pepper are imbedded into undulating walls of oaky malts. And then a vinous undercurrent threatens to plunge the whole proposition into chaos. The tannic transmutes, in the end, into something more like anise, silky, funky and expansive. Alcohol is infused into everything. It accompanies all stages of development.

Mouthfeel:
Heavy, almost viscous. Carbonation is there but you don't notice it.

Harmony:
A beautiful drink. It will leave you tired, but not weary. There is a feeling of accomplishment that grows throughout the process of understanding how all the flavors develop and coexist harmoniously.

Would I get it again?:

Picked this up on a New Jersey shelf for cheaper than I found the original in PA. Stoked to try this one out, never thought I would see this. 2008 vintage.

Into the snifter Reserva pours out the standard bark brown deep dirty pond water out of the bottle becoming dark burgundy in the glass. With a tilted pour not getting any foam on top. Some swirls create some soda pop bubbles but nothing beyond that.

More wood focused in the nose as the original had a more dark fruit vibe. Big scents of wood/oak with underlining vanilla. Some apple and plum with with toasted malt, caramel, raisin, werthers.

Im blown away by how tame and tasty this is at once. Reserva is luscious while big in smooth oaky vanilla up front. The fruit takes a backseat but remains present. Some cocco, apple, plum, raisin, bourbon tones, just all together marvelous.

Feel is so smooth it's not funny. it just glides down the mouth leaving oak and malt sweetness but no heat or intrusion. Approaching full bodied with a light carb letting you know your not alone.

I really wish I grabbed more of this. It was a treat and a sipped mine for a hour or so smiling. Not being a great fan of the original, the barrel aging, or perhaps this vintage just clicked.

11.2oz. bottle served in my Bruery tulip. 2008 vintage, lot A4DD. Pours a dull chestnut with a slightly murky clarity. Head is half an inch, loose, off-white and embedded with tiny ringlets. Head quickly disperses into a solid skim and a frothy band around the edges of the bowl. Some spots and strands of lacing were revealed during the tasting. Nose is tannic, expresses some ethanol, dark fruit and a trace of oak, which was much more pungent off the cap pop, but is much more diffuse in the glass. Taste follows nose; however, ethanol character is not really present in the flavor profile and oak character all but disappears. Mouthfeel is medium-light with a mild, even carbonation and some very minor, residual alcohol heat at the finish. A very good Quad - great balance and a well-hidden abv contributes to its exceptional drinkability. Not sure how much aging would enhance the experience on this one, but it might be worth securing an additional bottle to sit on for a few years.

Split a 2008 bottle into two snifter

A- Dark brown with almost no head

S- Caramel and vanilla up front, some oak, honey, roasted malts, yeast, very amount of alcohol

T- Amazing complexity, the caramel and vanilla come out up front right away, nice roasted malts in the middle, finishes with hints of oak and honey with some nuttyness. Hints of spices through out. Small amount of alcohol burn, but really does not make you think 10% ABV

M- Full body, smooth, silky, chewy

D- Amazing, I wish I had bought two bottles. Must try.

Bottle into The Bruery tulip; another bottle grabbed at Brusin' Ales in Asheville.

Pours very dark brown, murky, with a thin but quite persistent creamy light brown head on top. Fantastic explosion of lacing as the glass recedes.

Nose is beautifully rich - densely bready, cocoa and clove with some spicy alcohol, dense figs mixing with a bit of a currant bite.

Taste is more savory than expected - notes of richly spiced sweetbreads, figs and raisins, a lightly tart vinous note that brings to mind red grape skins and currants, very light earthiness on the finish that's got a bit of breadcrust. Alcohol and yeast bring loads of clove and just general spiciness to this one. A savory, almost leathery quality to it, though much more appealing in action than in description. Beautifully balanced between tart and sweet, spicy and savory. Every aspect perfect complementary to the other 3.

Mouthfeel is lightly fluffy, carbonation massages the tongue over a medium-full body that isn't heavy at all. Beautifully done.

Fantastic drinkability. Excellent all-around beer, but the flavor and mouthfeel really bump this one up. Beautiful.

Poured into an E&J Cask & Cream glass on 11/16/10

Lot A 4 DD

Flat brown color, not quite dull. Looks murky until held to the light as a few crimson highlights emerge. Two fingers of toasted brown foam. Head retention thins to 1/8th inch layer leaving decent swaths of lace.

The aroma is deep with notes of raisin & other dark fruit hints, brown sugar, bread, a touch of caramel. A little sweetness to be had. Woody with undertones of yeast. Spices emerge after swirling the glass.

Dark fruit flavors (plum & raisins) intermingle with a toasted blend of not-too-sweet sugars - brown sugar, caramel & cocoa. Nice spicy aspect throughout. The flavors really start to gel over time. Once it starts to warm & open up, oak flavors become apparent. Some bready notions, especially on the second pour. A dash of cinnamon.

The feel is kind of watery but doesn't strike me as too thin; in fact it fleshes out as it warms. Carbonation has a bit of a kick initially but calms down half way through each sip. Finishes dry enough with a slight gritty feel.

At 10% abv the alcohol is very well hidden & drinkability benefits because of it. Appreciable heat is minimized, though it does have a warming effect. The second pour is actually murky, as some of the sediment made it into the glass; it also seems a hair sweeter. In any case, worth a shot.

On tap at Pizzeria Paradiso.

Pours a very dark brown color, not quite black, with little to no light going thru the glass. Head is very silky and thin and has a beige color. No lacing on this one, after about 5 minutes it looks like a glass of wine.

Aroma could be a little stronger and I get lots of dark fruit, raisins, yeasty esters and a port-wine/alcohol note in the end.

This beer tastes very good. Lots of dark fruit (plums, figs, raisings) upfront with a honey-like sweetness throughout. Towards the end of the sip I can definitely get some oak character along with a hint of noble hops. The aftertaste is very rich and yeasty with some alcohol warmth and red grape astrigency.

Body is medium to high and carbonation is on the lower side making this beer incredibly smooth. I find it hard to believe that it is 10% abv.

Very pleasant on the palate and highly drinkable, this is what Belgian beer is all about.

Thanks to Smalls for hooking me up with this beauty! Nice ruby-brown pour with a quickly fading head and great lacing. Unique nutty nose with prunes, oak, caramel, red wine, and a touch of vanilla. The taste mirrors the nose and is just as complex. The nuttiness and complexity makes this stand out from other quads I've had. It reminds me of a nice red wine. Very woody and smooth and the vanilla and oak get really noticeable as it warms. The alcohol is really well disguised. Definitely the smoothest, most drinkable and enjoyable quad I've ever had. Another world class offering from De Struise!

This beer was poured into a tulip glass. It's color was a dark brown with very little off-white foamy head. Alcohol is well-hidden and it doesn't drink like a 10% abv beer. It is medium-bodied with little carbonation. Drinkability is good with this beer.

11.2oz brown bottle poured into a Westmalle chalice.

A: Pours very deep brown with no light shining through. Moderate head on the pour with some retention, mostly holding at a thick skim. Decent lacing.

S: Deep malty aromas with some complex spicing. No definite spices but a pleasant spiciness. Some light sweet aroma in the back, maybe from the oak. Maybe a touch of some blood/metallic. Overall, somewhat subtle.

T/M: Awesome flavor. The signature Pannepot dark spicy malts, almost brown breadish. Some pleasant alcohol that has mellowed and doesn't really have much heat. Moderate yeast profile with a bit of spice. The oak aging isn't huge in this beer and I think I'd actually like to see a bit more. Attentuation doesn't seem as high as much Belgians of this style but it does have just a bit of dryness in the finish. Carbonation doesn't seem quite as high as it should be, and might be causing some lack of dryness.

D: Very tasty beer and I could drink gallons of anything Urbain makes.

11/05/10- Had a 33 cL botle of the 2007 Pannepeut Old Monk's Ale.
A: Murky brown, pours a nice cream head that dies to an active collar and film.
S: Raisins, molasses, some leafy moldy hops, dark candi sugar, figs, bourbon (w/o the barrel).
T: Very sweet tar-caramel, cigar/molasses/raisins are big players here. Quick on the tongue. Mild leafy bitterness fades to a nutty bourbon roast finish. Mildly lingers.
M: Slightly thinner but with a mildly creamy carbonation. Sticky linger.
D: Pretty good, a little boozey.

Pannepeut 2007 in Chez Moeder Lambic (they didn't have the one I actually wanted). New young bartender made a point of pouring the beer and then made a hames of it...oh well. Even though there was way too much frothy head, some good head retained and stuck with us till the end. The beer itself was chestnut brown and quite cloudy (maybe to do with pour).

Dark fruits come through on the nose but also some malt and brandy. This follows through on the palate and it is almost like a christmas pudding - lots of dark fruit: figs, caramelised cherries, dates etc. There is clearly some biscuit malt there as well and the hopping counteracts some of the sweetness. Overall, it is a little too sweet for me (had a 2008 recently and wonder if the extra year is too much for the beer?). Really intense flavour for sure but quite heavy and I would struggle to drink more than one.

2008 vintage.

a - pour is dark brown with minimum head that dissipates immediately.

s - smell is carmalized brown sugar, plum, and spice

t - plum and brown sugar sweetness. very smooth. some booze flavor, but at 10% that's expected. some spice, but mostly a malty sweet flavor.

m - medium body. carbonation is low, but enough there to keep it from feeling syrupy.

overall - very tasty, I threw a second bottle in the cellar. This will age phenomenally. I'm surprised the lack of oak I taste/smell.

2008 33cl into a tulip. Pours a very deep reddish mahogany. Minor head dissipated rather quickly, low carbonation.

Aroma is rather highly spiced for a quad, much more than just the typical dark ripe fruits - superb.

Medium bodied mouthfeel. The aging is immediately obvious. Not too sweet. I expected the aging to mellow the alcohol but it is surprisingly obvious although it has no warmth. Still somewhat vinous as is Pannepot but the finish has been improved as the bitterness is down a notch, doesn't have the same burnt finish. I wish the after taste lingered longer

I prefer this over the regular Pannepot as the flavor is smoother from start to finish likely due to a year of age. While the barrel is obvious it is not dominant. De Struise certainly is interesting!

2008 bottle poured into a new belgium glass. Opaque brown with ruby edges, small mocha head with some lacing. Smell is caramel and sweet malt up front followed by wet barrel, sweet tobacco, and a hint of orange peel. Taste is not as big as I thought it would be. Only slightly sweet, caramel malts with a touch of bitterness and milk chocolate coffee. Doesn't have the characteristic quad yeast flavor i was expecting. Long roasty aftertaste and alcohol is very well hidden. Mouthfeel is more like a stout then a quad - medium to heavy and a mild carbonation. A great beer overall, although I am not sure it is completely within the style parameters. As far as the BA style description goes, it fits.

A: The pour is a dark amber color, perhaps we could call it mahogany with a fluffy tan head on top.

S: There are lots of different dark fruit aromas here, perhaps some figs, plums, raisins, along with a non-dark fruit--pears. A lot of caramel malt, brown sugar, and a hint of bread.

T: A mild spiciness followed by an intense dark, sweet fruitiness. Raisins, plums, figs, cherries, and brown sugar with a hint of alcohol and perhaps even a bit of oak.

M: The body is medium to full with a very creamy and full level of carbonation.

D: I like the regular Pannepot a fair amount and this is even better. A really fantastic beer and one that I would easily drink again.

Poured a 2008 into a chimay goblet. Great dark brownish red color with almost no head and slight lacing along the ridge of the top of the glass. Some large bubbles centered at the top. Letting it warm a bit before i dig in.

Great yeast spice up front with a nice nose of alcohol. Tons of candy sugar notes and raisin flavors abound. Slight carbonation but enough.

Great Beer!!!

Dark, cloudy, brown body with a two finger thick, dense, foamy head. This looks very nice.
Smell is very sweet with plenty of toasted malt aromas and some mild spices. Also a little bit of dark fruits, namely raisins.

Flavour is big dark fruits; whiskey soaked raisins and cooked plums. A bit of caramel, and at 10%, a decent bit of detectable alcohol. This is a bit strong, but certainly very well crafted; a sipper, for sure.

Mouthfeel is very smooth and silky; almost oily, but not offensively so. Very well crafted, but a 'one and done' for sure.

2008 vintage. Light pour for this quad, a somewhat lightish brown, almost cola colored. Lots of raisins and Belgian sugars in the nose along with a good bit of whiskey. Smooth taste, rich and hearty; almost chewy like a strong stout. Oak-aged barrels show through with the whiskey-like smoothness. Dates, raisins and other dark fruits emerge. Immensely drinkable. A true classic here and one I need to find again.

Pannepot Reserva pours a dark reddish brown color. It has a quite a hazy look, and light cutting through gives it a deep red appearance. Very attractive color. A soft tan head caps it off. It rises to about a finger and a half in depth before falling to a surface covering quickly. It held firm there for a quite a while. Lacing was light and spotty.

The nose is good, but isn't a stunner. It's lacking just a bit in terms of overall strength. Initially it features a nice mix of dark fruit and spices. Raisin, fig, and plum are all present. A little cherry is also noted. A little cocoa like chocolate is noted throughout. Honestly it smells a little like fruit cake. Oak is definitely in the mix and adds character and depth. Sweet caramel and faint honey are noted on the tail. Alcohol is noted, but doesn't smell very strong. Smells good, but needs more muscle.

The flavor is very impressive. It starts out with a nice cocoa flavor. Chocolate malts give it a very solid, flavorful base. There's a hint of sweet caramel, but it's not as strong as the chocolate. Dark fruit is very prominent and resonates throughout. Raisin, fig, and plum flavors are very tasty (and a little tangy). Spices complement the other flavors well, but aren't overly strong. Secondary flavors include cherry, oak, tobacco, and musky and earthy notes. Alcohol is blended very well and isn't strong at all. Finishes tangy and a little spicy. Very deep, complex, and satisfying.

Pannepot Reserva has a medium body that's very svelte and smooth. Carbonation is light lends much to its smooth feel. Drinkability is very high. This is tasty stuff that goes down incredibly smooth and easy. Unfortunately this bottle contains only 11.2 ounces. More, please.

There's not much bad to say about Pannepot Reserva. Aside from the nose being a little weak it's extremely impressive. The flavor is very deep and complex. Personally, I don't think it's quite as good as Pannepot-Old Fisherman's Ale, but it's not far off at all. This is very impressive beer that needs to be experienced. Find a bottle.

2008 11oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.

Appearance: dark chocolate with off-white head and minimal lacing.

Aroma: prunes, raisins, cherries and sweet spices.

Flavor: caramel, dark fruits, roasted malts and raisins.

Mouthfeel: creamy medium body with medium carbonation.

Overall impression: lacking on the aroma and appearance but outstanding flavor. complex and unique, this is good but not worth the price.

Poured into a bulb glass a deep amber tinged chesnut brown with a thick two finger tannish colored ead that held well.Aromas of deep dark fruit aka...raisins,prunes,and candied orange peel,almost a spiced cake element to it.Flavors again have a spiced cake note to it with some candied fruit,I dont really detect the calvadose barrel aging much though.A very good beer but maybe a bit overrated?

11.2oz bottle from 2008 picked up for $9 and drank from my chimay chalice.

A- this one pours out a dirty looking murky dark brown. there is also a thin beige head on top. the head quickly fizzes away into little more than a crown. small spots of lacing are left behind.

S- the smell is pretty subdued. the first thing i pick up on is a brown sugar like sweetness. after that comes some spice and a heavy blast of alcohol. the evidence that it was once in a barrel comes through very faintly with some oak/vanilla.

T- the alcohol i could smell is the first thing that comes to mind as i take my first sip. after that comes the sugary sweetness and some faint cherries, figs, and plums. the oak and vanilla are more pronounced in the taste than the nose. some spices are mixed in here as well.

M- light bodied with a high level of carbonation that is common with this style. moderate to high level of warming from the booze.

D- i was very excited to try this one, but after i did i was left with a feeling of disappointment. the original version is better and cheaper. ill stick with that one from now on.
