Barrel aged Pannepot all I can say is WOW.The smoothness that the barrel aging adds is over the top and if there were any edges on Pannepot. Which I never detected any Panny by itself is a World Class brew. The barrel aging adds a whole new depth to this Struise masterpiece. All the wonderfull flavors from the Pannepot the carmel vanilla spice smoothness and the added aroma of the oak aging truly push this beer into a aficionados cellar collection to be savored. My highest praise . A true masterpiece. Its METAL

Snagged this bottle off a shelf at Dawson’s in Severna Park, hiding behind some other brews while home for the holidays. 2009 bottle poured to a Unibroue tulip on 1/9/14. The bottle says only 3,000 bottles of this made. Not a bad find! Pours a murky dark brownish purple with a small off white or khaki colored head. Beautiful aroma of plums, super ripe pears, raisins, tobacco, toffee, chocolate, brown sugar, lots of beautiful mellow oak with a nice helping of booze that makes me almost think this was bourbon barrels. Flavor of raisins, plums, brown sugar, some warming booze, light cocoa, toffee, tobacco, and much more spice than would be expected from the aroma. The oak dries out the finish a bit and keeps this a very smooth and mellow brew despite the alcohol and spice present. The mouthfeel is heavy, like huge imperial stout heavy, and yet has low to medium carbonation. This was pretty freaking awesome.

Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is vinuous with some dark fruits and a smidge of coffee. The vinuous character appears again in a big, big way in the taste - absolutely delicious. It's backed up by a dark fruit character with subtle notes of chocolate/coffee. Also layered with spices and brown sugar. Mouthfeel is excellent. Medium-heavy bodied with perfect carbonation.

This really is a tremendous beer. I was seriously disappointed by Pannepot and found it overly roasty. However, the barrel aging has completely muffled those notes in the Reserva and added a huge vinuous character. Phenomenal quad.

2006 bottling poured into a Chimay glass.

Great dark brown color. Extremely lively head. Excellent lacing that lasted till the last drop.

This is a truly a unique beer. I have never had a quad like this. Extremely well balanced. There are hints of star annise as well as sweet candy flavors.

Extremely smooth and drinkable for the high ABV. Don't get me wrong this is a sipper but I could drink this all night long.

Here's to the "Sturdy Brewers" for another great beer.

1st Review:

Poured from a 330 ml bottle, 2008 vintage, into a La Chouffe Tulip, served at about 50 Degrees F. Poured 3/4, swirled the remainder and added to the glass. Emptied the bottle, so hazier than a clear pour. Purchased at Burlington Canal's, $10.49 per bottle. Bought in September '10.

Looks a dark, acorn brown and hazy, with a constant effervescence, but little head retention. Very little lacing, and could see the liquid from the top of the glass. Got a bit more foam with the pour of the last 1/4 of the bottle, swirled with the sediment.

Smell of raisins, figs, and a roasty malt, intermittent with clove and coriander. Get your nose close enough and the fizziness will burst into your nostrils, which isn't a bad thing.

Tastes similar to the nose, but you sense the alcohol quickly, but fades after a couple of sips. As it warms, the toffee and oakey aromas are palpable, and the hops begin to come through.

My all time favorite Belgian beer. I know those are strong words, but this Quad is the strongest of contenders. Pricey, but worth every penny. Has improved with age as well, glad I waited an extra 6 months after purchase to review it.

From a 2008 lot A 4 DD, served in a Chimay Chalice

Brown with a reddish hue, lots of carbonation in the glass but thin off white head that sticks around the way down. Very little lacing on the glass.

Sweet metallic aroma. Smell reminds me of a Duchesse De Bourgogne. Can smell some of the alcohol.

Sweet up front dried fruit in the middle with a nice light spice finish.

Very smooth and velvety, a little burn from the alcohol.

This was one of the best beers that I have had so far. I could drink quite a few of these if I could get more of this. Blown away by this one.

2008 Vintage Bottle, poured into a Tulip Glass

Appearance: This quad poured a nice finger of head. A very creamy looking, tan head stands up nicely over time. The color is very dark, typical of quadruples. A chocolate brown appearance with a very slight hint of garnet. Around a 27-29 SRM.

Scent: Raisins, prunes, lots of dried fruit up front. I get warm aromas; cinnamon, caramel, heavy malt. On the finish I get a bit of sherry. Very little hop aromas. There seems to be a lot going on in this beer. Lots of complexity in the nose.

Taste: Just like on the aroma rich, stone fruit as well as dried fruit flavors up front. The taste of oak is prominent throughout, but it doesn't overwhelm the other flavors. Mild sweetness is complemented by a strong malt taste, which provides a hint of bitterness towards the back of the beer. Just a touch of spice at the very end of this beer. Complex with minimal hop flavors and just a slight presence of the high alcohol content.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth and heavy bodied. The mild sweetness works wonderfully with the slight bitterness of the roasted malts. Light carbonation on this beer.

Overall: I have had a few quadruples, but not many. This was definitely enjoyable and easy to drink. This Belgian Quad has been aged on oak but the oak doesn't overpower the beer. The flavors work wonderfully with each other and this 2008 vintage has aged exceptionally well. I wish I had more than one bottle of this vintage.

After the superb Pannepot, very excited to see this brew.
2005 vintage
Opening results in a nice hiss, but unlike the fresh version, not a gusher.
Pours a deep black coffee tone, head dissapates very quickly, leaving a well carbonated body.
Aromatically extremely inviting. Prune, raisin, oak, tobacco, ginger, smoke, fig, pepper, cherry, leather, a light warming on the finish from a touch of alcohol.. A nice boost of yeast adds a spicy creamy note. Rye bread, cocoa, tart, sour molasses, whisky, really musky as it warms.Imagine a cool damp barn. Wow, really complex aromatically, it slowly opens up. Allow this one to "breathe".
Flavor is..smooth. Carbonation is quite low, but fig, raisin, pepper, ginger, clove, anise, and a light peppery finish are upfront in the taste.Sourish molasses, wild field honey, sour apple, the sourness is outstanding, granny smith juice, lemon, citric, cabernet vinegar come into the mix. The sourness was quite unexpected, but very welcome, and immensley different than fresh Pannepot. A light peppery/oaky/smokiness rounds out the final notes.
..Beautiful, truly a display in what aging a great ale can do. A slightly sweet cocoa--raisin(impeccable) Quad is now a sourish-vinegar accented smoky dark "creation". Yeast has performed it's magic.
Mouthfeel is light, sour, tingling and smooth. Is there 10% in this brew? Amazing.

A: Pours a really dark mahogany with a one finger head that dissipates into a thin covering with some appetizing lacing.

S: smells like an aged barley wine. lots of dark raisin or currant, molasses and a bit of tobacco. has just a touch of an herbal profile. Has the characteristics of a really well made old ale... my fav style btw. I get some damp wood out of it after a while

T: like the smell but a bit more subtle. it has a nice belgium old funk... like an old closet but a closet with something good in it that makes you take a deep breath of it. if i didnt know it was aged on oak i wouldnt be able to detect it but right at the end i get the woody character with the dry vanilla taste from it.

M: It amazes me how thin it is. i really enjoy the carb level. just enough pop in it to let some flavor out but not a tongue stinger at all.

D: the mouth feel lets me down this beer even though i dont want to because its tasty and i want to savor it. really hardly any alcohol detected and the flavors really flow well. i would love to find a bottle of some older vintages.

Vintage 2009

Very dark, just like plums and blood. Thick and viscous with a bubbly tan head.

Raisin, nutty, spicy, milky, chocolaty, caramel, and lots of toffee

Heavy, well thought out flavors. Grape notes are great; buried in the right amount of sweetness. Nothing heavy, just strong robust flavors. Very chewy and nicely heavily carbonated. Smooth, no heat.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! This brew flies sooo far under the radar it's not funny. Amazing Quad!

I poured this from a skinny 11.2oz brown bottle into a stemmed globe shaped glass.

A= Poured a slightly murky brown color with some reddish highlights and a 3/4" cream colored head. The head dropped to a skim and did not leave any real lacing behind.

S= Sweet and complex aroma. I noticed dark/dried fruits like raisin, plum, fig, etc. I also got a good bit of candi sugar and molasses in the nose as well as some Belgian yeasty character. Very very nice.

T= Taste followed the nose with the sugars and the dark fruits again dominating, and the yeast adding its own character secondarily. If I had to compare this to another beer, I would say it reminds me of what a blend of Rochefort 8 and Gulden Draak might taste like.

MF= Medium bodied and showed a medium carbonation level for the style. Lacked effervescence.

D= Very good beer here, and one I will certainly seek out again. Its been a while since I had the regular Pannepot so I believe a side by side is in order!

The Struise Brouwers were at the Borefts festival in Bodegraven, the Netherlands with a lot of super beers. In De Molen, a fine dutch brewery, were a lot of good breweries but the best brewer was The Struise.

Poured in my the Molen tasting glass this beer looks absolutely perfect. This is one of the best quads when you don't like the oaktaste.

Typical aroma of a banana, licorice and vanilla mix. Sweet spicey complex flavour.

Loved every sip of it. I asked Urbain when he is going to brew this pannepeut again because i need a crate of this beer!! I will have to wait a while.

Tried it alongside best quads (Westvleteren 12, Rochefort 10, St Bernardus 12 and La Trappe Q.) and it was very different. Smoke, chocolate, black berries - none of those is present in those quads. Not much of dried fruits, like in VW12, R10 and SB12. None of the honey and candies, like in La Trappe. More bitter. Also, much darker. I'd say it's something between BA Imp. Stout and Belgian strong dark ales. Very original beer, one of the best Belgian.

On tap poured into a wine glass. 2008 vintage.

Pours a hazy dark brown with a thin light brown head. Nose is malty, funky and sweet. A bit of booze but not too much.

Taste is amazing. Possibly the best quad I've had. Rich and sweet, super complex and flavorful. Very easy drinking its so smooth and rich.

2007 vintage tasted at the Kulminator in September 2008.
A: Murky ruby red with thin white head.
S: Aroma of nutmeg and allspice, maybe some vanilla.
T/M: Full-bodied balanced malt, hops and spice - figs and dates, raisins, that vary throughout, Complex mix of flavors and a long bitter finish.
D: Outstanding brew.

2008 bottle, drinking date of this review.

Deep chestnut, the only color seen in direct light. A one inch head quickly settles into a tight, thin layer of head.

A wonderful, rich aroma. Loads of figs. raisins, cherries, sweet malts, molasses, licorice. Wonderful. So deep and rich. Bit of booze but there's enough other aroma to support the booze.

Very complex taste as well. Follows the aroma. Plus chocolate. And some light spice, which offsets the sweetness perfectly. Chewy. Very dry finish. Moves from sweet and refreshing to chewy and fulfilling to a lingering dryness.

One of the greats.

Pours a deep dark purple red. Not quite stout in color but definitely Belgian dark ale.

Smells fantastic, plums, raisins, dried fruit and molasses, touch of alcohol smokiness. Belgian yeast is also present.

Tastes of definite dark fruits, black cherry and raisins with fig. Mixed into a vat of oaky chocolate. Some spicy notes from the yeast poke through along with a touch of molasses. Somewhat sweet yet highly balanced with a touch of its abv showing. Still I can't tell its 10%

Mouthfeel is perfect, creamy round and smooth.

Overall, I'm loving this one. Seems age does this 2009 version well. I'm already planning on finding more. A highly recommended try if you like quads and dark ales.

Look: pours hazy dark caramel brown color with a small light brown head.
Smell: Plums, yeast, candy sugar, cloves, pepper, oak and alcohol
Taste: Full of dark fruits, candy sugar, but also spicy (pepper, clove), vanilla and a bit alcohol hop bitterness in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation and medium creamy body
Overall: Great beer, one of the best in the style

I purchased a few of these and have been sitting on them for some time. Today it just hit me to give it a try.

2006 bottle

A - Deep deep brown with ruby corners and a deep tan head. The head sticks to the glass and remains as I drink it down.

S - Alcohol, plums and figs hit you first then some spice I can't put my finger on. Very unique nose.

T - Again dark fruits and a leather flavor. Molasses and caramel malts come next. This is so complex. The layers of flavor keep you guessing whats in here. As it warms some sweetness, almost cherry like, comes thru.

M - Rich and velvety. Nice low carbonation on this quad.

D - This thing is so smooth. The alcohol in the nose is completely absent in the taste...where is the 10%??

Overall a beauty! I cannot wait to try Black Albert after drinking this one!

I consumed a 3 bottle vertical for this review. A 2008, 2007, & 2006 Vintage each poured into my Duvel Tulip. Each bottle was 330ml (11.2oz).

Appearance: Very deep reddish almost ruby brown with a very nice ½”head that quickly receded to just a cap, lacing is very good. Each vintage remained virtually identical.

Smell: Very similar to the standard Pannepot, dark fruit and spice was common to all three. The major difference being the mocha aromas decreased dramatically with age.

Taste: Extraordinary flavor, as expected. Rich dark fruit flavors primarily raisin, some warming from the alcohol which is otherwise well masked. As in the aroma, the difference being the mocha flavors which increased dramatically with youth. The 2008 had very forward mocha flavor, the 2007 was less so with the mocha integrated and the oak more noticeable, the 2006 was extraordinary all flavors nearly in perfect balance, dark fruit, mocha, and a hint of oak.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth, very drinkable.

Overall: Once more a world class brew from De Struise. I would suggest drinking a fresh one and cellaring as much as you can as this beer ages, very, very, well (as does all Pannepot seemingly!).

One of three versions of Pannepot I've had the pleasure of sampling recently. This one, aged in French oak barrels, 2008 version. This one has a soft pour, as an aged ale should, relatively calm, russet brown. Definitely picking up plenty of oak in the nose, a nice layer. All the typical Pannepot flavor is there, but the barreling and aging and wood have mellowed it out quite a bit. Very nice. Layers of sweet spiced plum, raisin, rum, cake, nice matlyness and depth. Leathery. Velvety but slightly thinned out mouthfeel from the usual version. This is an outstanding beer - quite different really from the standard Pannepot. Not necessarily better or worse, but a different beast. Having sampled the regular Pannepot, the Reserva, the Pannepeut (Danish), and the Pannepot Wild, I have to say my favorite is the old standard issue, with a good year or two of age on it. But they all have their quirks making each one different, which is why we like beer. Cheers.

Poured into snifter

Appearance is dark brown with a reddish hue in the light. I get about a 1 inch off-white head that falls to a skim and stays.

Aroma is off the charts good with notes of raisins, dark brown sugar and molasses, figs, plums, dates, and dark cherry. VERY reminiscent of Rochefort 10, it even has the note that I would describe in smell as creamy (vanilla?) that I only found in Rochefort 10. Side by side, at least based on memory, I think they'd be hard to tell apart.

Taste is right up there with Rochefort too again with sweet sugar notes up front, raisins, figs, dates, but the difference here is in the finish that it leaves behind which is more spicy and woody and there's even a bit of an herbal hop presence.

Mouthfeel is not as effervescent as many Belgian beers but it still comes off as soft, medium bodied.

Really nice, certainly better than my other experience with the regular Pannepot, maybe that was a lame bottle.

Vintage 2010 (5 years aged)

About to follow this beer up with a Pannepot Grand Reserva 2009 Vintage.

Pours opaque dark brown with little khaki foam sitting on top. The nose is hints of dark fruit and booze. Flavors of chocolate, plums, vanilla, red apple, alky heat, toffee. Nice subtle crispy carbo, medium feel. Sweet lingering on my tongue.

2006 version into the Duvel tulip.

Murky brown pour with a thick creamy constant head that never fades out...

Superbly complex aroma of brown sugar, raisins, grapes, a touch of chocolate, perhaps some earthy oak, and loads of other things that seem to rush up out of the glass at me... Damn, this really smells delicious...I mean really delicious...

Oh... And I'm not disappointed at all... This is just terrific...a perfect blend of sweet dark fruits blended with brown sugar and vanilla with some definite chocolate notes that finishes with the slightest of booziness that sets this off....very earthy and dark...

I'm starting to find a real appreciation for Belgians and this is near the absolute top of those that I've had... I've been wanting to try this forever and to be able to secure the Danish version is extra special... You rock, Aliza!

Poured 2010 11oz. bottle into St. Bernardus snifter

A-Pours very dark burgundy with 1/2 finger beige head. Has minimal lacing.

S-Aroma is of caramel, fruits, toffee, malt, some oak.

T-Taste is of caramel, fruits, and roasted malt.

M-Mouthfeel is well balanced has a semi-stickiness to the tongue. Full bodied. Low carbonation.

O-Overall this is great quad a must have. Hides the 10% very well. Must get some more.
