Amazing beer! It's sweet, dark roasty fruit dominates the palate. You can taste the subtle oak flavor making this a perfectly balanced Quad. This is Pennepot on steroids!The beer hides the ABV very well making this brew very drinkable.This beer is Legendary! its just so smooth. This beats Abt 12 which is tough to do.

Bottom Line: World Class Quad!

2010 Reserva poured into a tulip glass and you can immediately smell this beer. The aroma is big oak right up front, with sweet dark fruits in the background. I cannot wait to take the first sip.

First flavor is strong alcohol, but that quickly mellows out and this beer's true colors start to show. It's sweet, dark, roasty fruit. You can taste the wonderful oak flavor. It's deep and it sticks with you. Finishes with a boozy aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is outstanding. Silky, with the perfect amount of carbonation for the style.

Overall, comparable with standard Pannepot, but just.. different.

2005 vintage

Purchased from Etre Gourmet. Poured from an 11.2 oz bottle into my Chimay goblet. Murky, dense brown color with a minimal head and no lacing. A hard pure produces a covering of the top of the glass.

Smell is marvelous. Malt, brown sugar and dark fruit - plums and raisins.

Taste is great as well. Dark fruit and bready and caramel malts are dominant. Some sweetness.

Mouthfeel is rich and smooth. There is a little warming effect from alcohol but no burn. 8 years is a long time to age, provided much of the smoothness, but I wonder if there was any lost flavor during that time.

Enjoyed this one....an excellent Quad.

On-tap 9/20/2013 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a medium brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains apples, brown sugar, caramelized malts and Belgian yeast.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of brown sugar, fruit, caramel and some spice. Then some breadiness comes in from Belgian yeast and a hearty malt character. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, strong kick, decent representation of style, it’s a solid beer but there are others in the style that I would pick first.

Drank from my To Øl chalice, 2008 Vintage

A - Pours a dark cola colour, with a one fingered head that reduces to a film and laces.

S - Aromas of plums and dark woody fruits, chocolate and molasses.Plenty going on here.

T - Up front some nice sweet plums and vanilla. followed by some molasses and chocolate with a pronounced woodyness. The finish is very long and port like with the oak lingering. The booze is warming but no overpowering.

M - Medium to full body and low to medium carbonation. Very smooth

O - One of those beer that I not forget in a hurry. Pronounced balanced flavours, plenty of aroma just a little let down by the appearance. Recommended.

On tap at The Refuge in San Carlos; cylindrical, slightly curved glass. (Pasting notes & ratings from smartphone notes taken a few months ago). I had the 2009 "vintage."

A: Black, with short, tan head.

S: Cant smell too much because of the glass (was filled up all the way)... Mainly just some oakiness.

T: Cherry, chocolate, oak, hazelnuts, and lots of vanilla. Very, very tasty, especially upon the first sip. A little vinous (in a good way), probably from the high alcohol %. Lingering cookie-like aftertaste.

M: Medium-heavy body; bordering on just plain heavy... Maybe would have called it very heavy if I wasn't hungry. Flat mouthfeel, as expected, but feels syrupy and creamy.

O: Rivals the great oak-ages imperial stouts for level of complexity and tastiness.

2010 Reserva. poured into tulip.

A: pours a dark brownish/red. head is slightly off-white with hints of red. retention is decent. no lacing.

S: decent amount of oak with a lot of sweet unfermented sugar. a good deal of fruit underneath, but this is super sweet and relatively oaky.

T: a really rich drink. vinous. plums. figs. sweet heat, but not overwhelming. actually it is pretty mellow. oak is there and you can definitely tell in the finish. dries it out best it can. however, it doesn't completely. lingering fig flavor.

M: lower carb on a full body.

D: not too shabby. a full bodied brew with a good deal of flavor. very complex. the oak is present and adds one more dimension to regular pannepot.

11.2 oz poured into a snifter
2010 Vintage

A- Pours muddy dark brown. Turns black in the glass. A surprising two finger brown head. An intimidating looking beer.

S- Dark fruits, plum, figs, raisins. A caramel and candy sugar. A Belgian yeasty twang. Nice stuff

T- A syrupy beer. A good bittersweet balance. A massive dark fruit flavor profile starts this beer off. Candied raisins, ripe plums, a cherry pit flavor and a fig newton taste both in fruit and breaddy crust. A Roasted caramel and breaddy backbone. A slight char. A bit of dryness and crisp feel from the oak barrels. A bit of chocolate and pepper. A slight twang and spiciness from the yeast but the body and bold dark fruit flavor dominates the nose.

M- So much feel to this beer its fantastic. Silky smooth and great carbonation. A treat to the tongue.

O- Not a cheap beer but a fantastic value. $8.50 a bottle? I may need to get more. The best quad I have had to date, simply fantastic stuff. If this is the Reserva, whats the Grand Reserva taste like?

4 oz. served into a tasting snifter at ChurchKey. From notes; 2010 vintage.

A: Pours a dark ruby color. The head is little more than a thin khaki film. Still, it's very stout-like in appearance.

S: There are some evident tones of nuts, dark fruits, oak, and spicing here, however it's not nearly as evocative as I expected. What is here, at least, is well balanced and pleasurable.

T: The opening is mildly nutty and spicy. This will progress into a middle of earthy toffee, with a light oak finish. Solid complexity, but the flavors themselves aren't blowing my mind.

M: It's medium bodied in texture. The alcohol (seemingly in typical De Struise fashion) is well concealed in spite of its (also seemingly in typical De Struise fashion) dry finish. Very drinkable, as well.

O: Decent, but pretty disappointing. The only brew from De Struise this night that didn't wow me. Mayhaps the keg isn't in fantastic shape? This would probably be better if it were bottle conditioned, in fairness.

2008 bottling poured into a La Trappe chalice. The pour is dark and mysterious with nice mahogany highlights along the sides of the glass. Not much head, but enough to leave a nice thin lacing on the surface. The nose is simply divine. I smell gingerbread, dark fruits, cocoa, cookie dough, and rum. There is just so much there and all of it smells delicious.

Full-bodied, velvety smooth feel, and a luscious, extremely rich, malty flavor. The beer tastes like liquid spiced cake. Loads of rich, bready malt, brown sugar, honey, dark chocolate, toffee, raisins, and dates all meld together perfectly. That distinctive puff-pastry taste of Belgian yeast adds the perfect dry, biscuity, earthy hint to the richness. A warming, rummy alcohol whiff on the finish merely makes the flavors richer and gives the beer a port-like character.

A phenomenal beer. The flavor is so far off-the-charts I need new charts. I suppose it feels just a bit thin for all that flavor and I hate to compare every quad to those nice bottle-conditioned Trappist Ales, but this one did come off as a tad under-carbonated. Still, if you like quads and come across this one, you must pick it up. Expensive, but definitely worth a try. The flavor and complexity are simply unsurpassed.

Served room temperature in a snifter from a 33cl bottle. This is the 2010 batch. Bought for $8.50, which I hear is on the low end of the price spectrum.

Dark appearance with hint of cola color around the edges. Very fine carbonation, so the head disappears quickly.

Smell of an upstanding quad, with aromas of alcohol, caramel, spices, dried fruit, and malt.

Very smooth, dried-plum with alcohol taste, licorice, and cinnamon taste. Warm alcohol aftertaste.

With !0% abv, this is one of the better quads, but the licorice flavor is overwhelming.

My favourite style from one of my favourite breweries. Pannepot Reserve 2010 vintage. "Belgian Ale Brewed with Spices and Aged in Oak." I've had all the other Pannepot variants; really excited for this one. I try to avoid buying Belgian beers while in the U.S. because I know how much cheaper I can get them in Belgium, but I couldn't help myself when this came to my local beer store. Acquired for $7.99 USD. Expections could not be higher; every Pannepot I've had has been incredible. I loved the Grand Reserva. 10% ABV cofnirmed. "PnP No. 4" Bottle lot: 29|01|HH. Unpasteurized, unfiltered, and bottle conditioned. Imported by the Shelton Bastards. 11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with unbranded standard pry-off cap served into a Mitchells of Lancaster flared stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live.

Served cold, straight from the fridge, and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a lovely tan colour head, about 1.5 fingers in thickness. Nice soft complexion and creamy succulent texture. Colour is quite appealing given the style. Even consistent lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Supple, luscious, and inviting. No bubble show. Retention is quite good, around 7 minutes I'd say. The last of the creamy head clings to the surface, tantalizing the consumer. Soft and approachable.

Body colour is a a very dark ruby-black; solid and opaque. Some ruby glow at the bottom of the glass from scattered light. No yeast particles are visible, but it's nontransparent. Colour intensity is mild.

Looking good for a quadrupel. Very excited for this one.

Sm: Great. Dark fruits - including plum and fig. Cocoa powder, caramel, biscuit malts. Berry skin. Cream. Subtle supple oak in the background. Buried raisin. Dark currants and cherries emerge as it warms. A delightful mix of beautifully integrated dark fruit with very subtle oak notes. Luxuriously appealing. Traces of biscuity yeast. Some grape. Plum is dominant. An extremely subtle aroma with magnificent complexity. Mild in strength. No alcohol comes through. Can't wait to drink this one.

T: Ripples of luxurious dark fruit throughout - dates, dominant plum, fig, dark cherry, dark currants... Fruity notes are more overt than in many other top of the line quads; it lacks the masterful delicate subtlety of something like Westvleteren. Caramel. Hints of nutty notes. Biscuit malt. Some brown malt. Light cocoa powder. Some grape. Fruity sweetness up front slowly gives way to a bit of a more dry raisin body which still feels smooth and wet in spite of the hardening of texture. Nuanced. Oak isn't as splendorous as the aroma indicated; it's too restrained and timid here. I get the sense that the oak helps lend cohesion and focus to the many different flavours, but it doesn't offer much in terms of oaky or wooden taste. Not getting any subtle toasty or vanilla notes you might expect in an oak aged beer.

Overall, it's far more fruity than I expected. As a result, it's not quite as well balanced and built as other top Belgian quadrupels. Do I like it? Shit yes.

Mf: Supple, soft, smooth, and wet. Good carbonation; the bottle conditioning definitely helps it feel natural and apt. Good thickness and body. Good presence on the palate. Feels custom-tailored to the flavour profile. Extremely well done.

Still, it lacks the delicacy or fragility of superior quads.

Dr: Definitely a fine quad, no doubt. I'd definitely get it again at a better price; I can't justify the cost in the U.S. again knowing how little this would run be in Belgium. Hides its ABV very well and shows signs it would develop nicely with age. I'd definitely recommend this one to friends. Another jaw-dropper from De Struise. I tend to be hard on quads since they're my favourite, but this one I hold in high regard. I'd happily drink more than one of these in a night. I'm glad I'm not sharing it with anyone else.

Constructively, I'd like to see still more complexity and subtlety, as well as a refined fragile and delicate mouthfeel. Also, bring that oak out more, please! And maybe tame the fruit a bit. A bit too sweet and syrupy; I'm sure some reviewers will accuse it of being reminiscent of cough syrup but that's juvenile and reductive.

330mL bottle from Belmont Station. 2010 vintage. Westvleteren goblet.

A: Fizzes up from the glass. Very dark mahogany to the point of nearly being black. Creamy head disintegrates into leftovers. Leaves some pretty nice legs.

N: Greeted by a cavalcade of walnuts, sweet malt, raisins, prune, and oak. There's a touch of molasses about this. Some cola and plenty of clove. Cinnamon, peppercorn, fig and caramel. Very aromatic and pleasing if disjointed.

T: Heavy on the wood with a hint of savory flavors over the top of a bread sweetness. Tastes very exotic if a little overspiced and almost 'funky'. Shows some biting astringency. A little bit of soy sauce/salt.

M: Dense and full with lively carbonation.

O: I'd much prefer the base beer, the Monk's Ale or the Grand Reserva. Though this beer is very well rounded, it's almost got a wild element to it. Disappointed, I admit.

Dark plum like coloring it was served with out much head but had impressive lacing.

The scent was rather weak but once I had time to really investigate I caught plum, prune, fig and raisin.

The taste was very interesting as I caught huge chocolatey notes. Not barrel aged but impressive vanilla and caramel malt flavors set outside the typical dried fruit. I catch no alcohol but tons of candied sweetness, it's enjoyable but washed away with a wateriness.

Overhyped, perhaps, but enjoyable and tasty, oh yeah.

Pours an opaque deep brown with a modest beige head that dissipates to minimal lacing.

Fairly subtle aromas of plum, prune, and dark belgian candi sugar complement toasted oak and a hint of belgian yeast. Raisins emerge as it warms.

Boozy oak, with sweet maple backbone and underlying dark fruit notes of fig, prunes, and raisins form the flavor profile. Hints of rum and vanilla add complexity at the peppery finish.

Body is moderate, with minimal carbonation and lots of alcohol heat.

Pretty hot. Could use some aging to calm that down, but the flavor and aroma were more subtle than expected. Somewhat disappointing. Overrated, imo.

Pours a deep brown though surprisingly for a 2010 I'm not seeing a lot of yeast clouding. A bit of creamy head forms but no retention and fades before the glass is even 1/4 consumed.

Oak goodness really dominates the aroma giving way to chocolate, molasses, clove, and raisins.

Oak accents a very fruity almost sour base beer and then dominates the finish. There is beyond a complex brew but almost to a fault. A berry medley underneath oak and alcohol heat with light sugars sounds far better than this mix is providing. I think this beer needs another 2-3 years in the cellar to meld these flavors together more.

A bit hot and thin.

Pannepot reserva has a lot of potential, the oak flavors really add a nice adjustment to the regular beer. The problem is the base beer seems weaker and less prominent. I think age is needed on this. A 2010 served 2013 perhaps a 5 year gap between the bottle date and tasting are needed here. A shame as I thought I'd like this more from the nose and the first sip.

330 ml bottle into chalice, 2009 vintage. Pours murky dark reddish brown color with a small khaki head with decent retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Minimal glass lacing with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, prune, fig, molasses, toast, clove, pepper, oak, light roast, brown bread, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and fruity/spicy notes with moderate oak presence. Taste of raisin, prune, fig, molasses, toast, toffee, clove, pepper, oak, brown bread, light roast, and toasted earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruit, molasses, toast, toffee, oak, clove, pepper, brown bread, light roast, and earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of malt and fruity/spicy flavors; with moderate oak presence and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic oak aged quadrupel. Big complexity and great balance of flavors; and quite smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

2010 Vintage. Consumed May 19, 2013

A: Pours a very deep red, almost black/brown color with a fingers worth of tan head

S: Booze soaked fruits, spices, Belgian yeast, light oak, phenolic notes, and light alcohol all come through nicely

T: Follows the nose. Nicely complex right off the bat. Starts with the spices and dark fruits and moves into a light oakiness, phenolic notes, and warming alcohol. Finishes with lingering spices and oak

M: Medium-full bodied with low-moderate carbonation

O: A very good oak-aged quad. Regular Pannepot is solid, and the oak rounds out some of the harshness that it can have. It could also be rounded out due to the age itself, but regardless, it is a bit more complex than the regular version which is saying quite a lot. Definitely worthy of a purchase, especially if you can find it for under $10

This thick and heavy looking brew came to me in a fine tulip glass. It had a tall head, beige and lingered until the end. It's garnet brown color made a striking contrast.

In the nose I find dark fruits such as figs and raisins. Some spices also. Smells sweet too with a hint of alcohol.

Drinks with some essence of cheeries and berries. Candied sugar weaves it's way through the beer. Malty sweetness. I think I taste some oak high lights I don't know.
Flows heavy across the palate with a smooth sweetness. hints of alcohol peek through too.

Pours a deep dark purple red. Not quite stout in color but definitely Belgian dark ale.

Smells fantastic, plums, raisins, dried fruit and molasses, touch of alcohol smokiness. Belgian yeast is also present.

Tastes of definite dark fruits, black cherry and raisins with fig. Mixed into a vat of oaky chocolate. Some spicy notes from the yeast poke through along with a touch of molasses. Somewhat sweet yet highly balanced with a touch of its abv showing. Still I can't tell its 10%

Mouthfeel is perfect, creamy round and smooth.

Overall, I'm loving this one. Seems age does this 2009 version well. I'm already planning on finding more. A highly recommended try if you like quads and dark ales.

Pours a semi-hazy, dark brown body with a wispy, khaki colored head. As it recedes I get some decent spotty lacing.

Aromas begin with a melange of dark malts and toasted oak wrapped up in a luscious, sweet-smelling raisin/plum syrup. Medium-dark fruit and a light cola like rooty, spiciness.

The tastes begin with toasted brown bread soaked in caramel, tangy plums, golden raisins and an herbal, almost root beer spiciness. As it warms you get a little more of the Belgian esters from the Belgian yeast.

The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with moderate to light carbonation. Finish is dryish and semi-sweet. Finish is farily dry for such a big beer but dont get me wrong there is some candy sweetness here as well.

Overall this is a great Quad from a great brewer. I really need to sample this, the original and the Grand Reserva at the same time because I really can't recall a great difference in flavor but a horizontal tasting will hopefully alleviate that. Probably my favorite (and decently available) brewery of the Quad style.

I had the 2009 at Torst.

This comes in a rich dark brown, black color with a small head.

There is a big bready plum aroma. It's somewhat mellow without big booze and of dark fruits.

The flavor is similar to the aroma. It has a clean finish with this wonderful fresh pop despite being barrel aged. There's burnt caramel and sugar flavor. It has some prot wine characteristics. It really is one of the best quads I've had.

The mouthfeel is what I love because it has such a creamy smooth character.

330 mL bottle poured into a De Struise chalice. 2008 bottle.

Appearance - Deep garnet body that doesn't produce a head until the pour is almost complete. Chunks of sediment start flowing in and suspend themselves in the reddish fluid. The head is fleeting and results in just a lopsided collar of khaki foam.

Smell - Dark fruit dominated aroma. Brown sugar, caramel, all that stuff. Lacking the earthy component of regular Pannepot. Reminds me of Pannepeut.

Taste - Dark fruit flavors abound here as well and build to a slight cola flavor. The oak builds as the fruity sharpness does as well. It culminates in a bite that covers up much of the depth of the malt flavor.

Mouthfeel - Medium low carbonation and that bite lingers on the palate. Not sure what to call it. Tannins maybe?

Overall - Well it's Pannepot so it's still a great beer, but I guess I'm just disappointed that the oak seems to have cut out the great flavors instead of augmenting them.
