Tried it alongside best quads (Westvleteren 12, Rochefort 10, St Bernardus 12 and La Trappe Q.) and it was very different. Smoke, chocolate, black berries - none of those is present in those quads. Not much of dried fruits, like in VW12, R10 and SB12. None of the honey and candies, like in La Trappe. More bitter. Also, much darker. I'd say it's something between BA Imp. Stout and Belgian strong dark ales. Very original beer, one of the best Belgian.

Pours a black color. 1/5 inch head of an off-white color. Decent retention and slight lacing. Smells of European yeast, alcohol, sweet malt, hint of spice, hint of wood, hint of liquor, and a hint of pale malt. Fits the style of a Quadrupel. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of European yeast, alcohol, sweet malt, hint of spice, hint of wood, hint of pale malt, and slight liquor. Overall, weak appearance, complex aroma, complex body, but not well blended.

From a 330 ml bottle (2009 vintage) into a chalice. Reviewed from notes dated November 10, 2014.

A-The beer is very, very dark...nearly black. A short, creamy head of mocha foam lasts for quite a while. Not much in the way of visible carbonation.

S-The aroma is more like a stout than many quadrupels with some nutty, chocolate and roasted flavors coming through. That being said, there is still a healthy dose of Belgian flavors like nutmeg spice, molasses, brown sugar, molasses, prune, and raisin.

T-The taste is more fruity than the smell with plum, raisin, prune, and grape flavors hitting my palate. I also taste brown sugar, tobacco, and a light kick of black pepper spice on the finish. Alcohol is mostly concealed but a little bit of medicinal flavor comes through. My bottle was a 2009 vintage so I'm not surprised that I taste a bit of oxidation.

M-A lovely, creamy, mild carbonation rolls across the palate. The body is medium to full. Very nice.

O-This is another really good De Struise beer. The Reserva, like their other BDSA/Quad style beers is a nice mix of traditional flavors that have been tweaked just a bit. The high point of this beer is the mouthfeel, which is damn near perfect. Really well made beer here.

2010 vintage into Westy Chalice


Big brown pour with dark roasty brown fuzzy head that settles to nothing. This baby picked up some carb and became a gusher.


Aroma is deep of fruit cake, dark fig, sherry, sweet date, rum raisin, and faint oaky vanilla. Smells fabulous.


Taste has a deeper chocolate powder potency than the nose. Alongside that is stewed plum, sherry, old raisin, Madeira, sweet molasses, and a roasty caramel presence. Smooth flavor profile and certainly showing signs of age.


Mouthfeel is a bit thin likely since compared to regular Pannepot this was oak aged and already has some years on it. Still a good amount of carbonation and overall pleasant feel on the palate.


Overall very nice but not as great as two year old Pannepot.

Poured 2010 11oz. bottle into St. Bernardus snifter

A-Pours very dark burgundy with 1/2 finger beige head. Has minimal lacing.

S-Aroma is of caramel, fruits, toffee, malt, some oak.

T-Taste is of caramel, fruits, and roasted malt.

M-Mouthfeel is well balanced has a semi-stickiness to the tongue. Full bodied. Low carbonation.

O-Overall this is great quad a must have. Hides the 10% very well. Must get some more.

Vintage 2009. A little assertive and astringent. Slightly sour. Otherwise, rich and spicy and magnificent. Still. Would rather have normal Pannepot.

2010 bottle

Real dark brown, lacing beige head, lingering sediment.

Bread, yeast, wood.

Toffee and a rich, robust black tea. Fruit's not more than background, bread and caramel, though, little smoke. More than anything is black tea. Hard to come by unique quads, this one isn't like the trappist's.

Dense, not stout, but unexpected for a quad. Fitting, though.

2008 bottling

Appearance: A rather disappointing pour for a Belgian, with the head quickly dissipating and leaving the opaque mahogany colored liquid behind

Smell: Layered dried plum, oak, leather, caramel and brown bread

Taste: After sniffing the aroma, the taste is a bit of a letdown; the plum flavor is there in spades and the bread and caramel builds through the middle, but something is lacking; I am looking for a rich finish, but the oak and leather enters and fades without delivering; somewhat boozy

Mouthfeel: Medium body with low carbonation; warmth in the gullet

Overall: Expecting a six year old beer to deliver was perhaps a bit much, in this instance, but I thought the beer was going to be far more expressive and impressive than it turned out to be

2011 Vintage. Poured from the bottle into a chalice.

Pours a deep, nearly opaque brown with a dark tan head that fades away to a dusting on top. There is some obvious sedimentation and a fair number of floaties.

The aroma is quite amazing. Deep and malty sweetness, caramel, toffee, dark dried fruit, leather and yeasty bread all coming through. As it warms a bit, even hints of dark chocolate.

The taste slowly builds on the tongue. there's sweet malt and light fruit up front growing to bitter dark chocolate and dark roast coffee and even hints of soy, although it's understated. As it warms, I get more raisin, even some fresh grape. There is a long lasting dryness on the tongue.

The mouthfeel is quite amazing. It's rich and smooth and creamy with a little bubbly feel as well.

This is a pretty remarkable drinking experience. You must try it. Awesome.

Pannepot Reserva 2010

Pours a deep mahogany brown with a thin head reducing to clumpy lacing.

Aromas of sherry, sweet Marsala, raisin, toffee, brown sugar, apple cider.

Taste leads with soft brown sugar and explodes into raisin, cherry and dark fruits. The sweet sherry comes next and finishes with some soy sauce and oak. The alcohol is well integrated.

Mouthfeel is velvety and slightly viscous but not too thick. It has the silky mouthfeel characteristics that you get with a good barrel aged beer.

I can't believe how bright and alive this beer is for it's age. I liked the Pannepot 2011 despite its intense soy sauce flavor but this bottle knocks it out of the park for me. Every sip brings a wave of intense yet intricate flavors. The sherry flavors in particular are very interesting and enjoyable. Let this warm up a bit if you are taking it out of the fridge. I will look for more bottles of the Reserva. Can't wait to crack the Grand Reserva.

Update: April 15 - the second bottle was a different experience than the first. This was still a great beer but it was covered by a sugary apple cider sweetness.

330ml bottles. 2008 and 2009 vintages poured side by side.

A: Both vintages pour a murky mahogany woody brown. 08 definitely has less carbonation, but a thin dark tan collar briefly stuck around. The 09 has a nice dense finger of foam that slowly faded into a fuzzy film and collar.
S: The 09 is definitely a bit brighter and sweeter smelling, and the 08 has a few hints of musty damp oxidation, but other than that the noses are pretty similar with scents of dark fruits, raisins, leather, pipe tobacco and mild spice.
T: Both are actually fairly similar but the 09 flavors are a bit brighter. Powdery chocolate and dark fruits dominate, especially candied dates, raisins, and figs. Vanilla, oak, spice, nutmeg, and slight caramel, come through as well with a surprisingly earthy hoppy finish, slight sticky booziness, and slight bitterness.
M: Fairly similar as expected on both vintages. Maybe a bit more carbonation on the 09. Thick body, chewy mouthfeel, heavy and smooth, very soft carb, mellow, well-aged, and integrated.
O: Age has done wonders. 08 is amazing but I like the brighter (yet still very mellow) flavors of the 09 better. Both are some of the best quads in the world.

I've been wanting the Pannepot Reserva for a long time. Went to Max's seeing they had the Reserva 2009. I tried a sample and it was delicious! So I seen this little goober staring at me in the fridge. I said, "That bottle is definitely coming home with me today"! Well, enough of my chatter box, (Coffee is kicking in). Lets get down to business. I poured this liquid into my Chimay Chalice.... Yes that is my goto chalice while reviewing brews. This brew looks like the standard BSDA and or Quad. Dark murky brown body with sediment chunks floating around. Looks like I'm going to enjoy this! There was no frothy head to speak of just a nice light khaki lacing around the Chalice. Well, we know what's next. The aroma on this brew is very complex of Sherry notes. Toffee mingled with dark fruits hints of raisins and tart cherries. There is charred oak that gives off a smoked meat note. There was a subtle amount of spicy yeast character and hints of alcohol. Yes this smell is outrageous! Yup, now its time to sacrifice. This tastes like the nose details. Dark fruits and Sherry notes of toffee and hints of alcohol. Yet not offensive. There is a subtle touch of chocolate and mild vanilla that paves a way for a toasted nut finish. More vanilla in the aftertaste which I am a fan of! The flavor is very mellow yet takes your palate on a joy ride. The feel on this brew is Medium-light with soft velvety carbonation.

Overall: Bam! This beer packs some enjoyment factor for me. This beer so far is my highlight of 2014. I should go back to Max's and get the 2005 Vintage. This brew is delicate and still takes you on a joy ride like it stole your neighbor's car. Belgian Strong Ales are one of my favorite styles of beer, and then age it in Oak Barrels? Yes, Please! This brew is Recommended.

On draft at the Holy Grale in Louisville, Kentucky.

Dark ruby red to brown appearance. The nose is of sweet plums and cherries. The taste is very strong with dark malts, figs, plums, dried cherries, and a little smoke. Very smooth for an old. Overall very nice. It's definitely recommended.

A: Very dark purple with a brown head.

S: Dark fruit, a touch of pineapple in the nose.

T: Nice and spicy, some strong fruit notes, grape, cinnamon, very tasty.

M: Typical of the style, full bodied, on the smooth side.

O: One of the better quads out there, though not on the same tier as bernardus, rochefort, westy, etc.

Snagged this bottle off a shelf at Dawson’s in Severna Park, hiding behind some other brews while home for the holidays. 2009 bottle poured to a Unibroue tulip on 1/9/14. The bottle says only 3,000 bottles of this made. Not a bad find! Pours a murky dark brownish purple with a small off white or khaki colored head. Beautiful aroma of plums, super ripe pears, raisins, tobacco, toffee, chocolate, brown sugar, lots of beautiful mellow oak with a nice helping of booze that makes me almost think this was bourbon barrels. Flavor of raisins, plums, brown sugar, some warming booze, light cocoa, toffee, tobacco, and much more spice than would be expected from the aroma. The oak dries out the finish a bit and keeps this a very smooth and mellow brew despite the alcohol and spice present. The mouthfeel is heavy, like huge imperial stout heavy, and yet has low to medium carbonation. This was pretty freaking awesome.

The Struise Brouwers were at the Borefts festival in Bodegraven, the Netherlands with a lot of super beers. In De Molen, a fine dutch brewery, were a lot of good breweries but the best brewer was The Struise.

Poured in my the Molen tasting glass this beer looks absolutely perfect. This is one of the best quads when you don't like the oaktaste.

Typical aroma of a banana, licorice and vanilla mix. Sweet spicey complex flavour.

Loved every sip of it. I asked Urbain when he is going to brew this pannepeut again because i need a crate of this beer!! I will have to wait a while.

I have had both the reserva and the regular releases for years. Both are of the same quality, generally, although the reserva has some deep, port-like flavors that have developed more than the regular. Both are world class quad's, right up there with the Trappist offerings.

a: Dark, murky brown; served with a small fizzy head.

s: Soft, dark fruits abound. Rich, boozy plums and raisins with a hint of chocolate. Floral heat comes out as this warms.

t: Incredibly rich fruit flavors of raisins, plums, and figs plus chocolate and sherry(?).

m: Soft and full bodied.

o: Decadent.

From 33 cL bottle to snifter

A: Deep, dark brown in color, opaque and creamy looking. Forms a effervescent 1-inch that fall under its own weight, leaving barely a trace.

S: Malt-forward, subdued nose with unusual notes of nutmeg or paprika. Dried fruit can be parsed, specifically raisins and prunes. The surrounding bouquet is sweet and toffee-like. Not as boozy and you'd expect for the style.

T: The dried fruit notes are most prominent, which play off a caramelly sweetness at the front of the sip. Drier than most quads, and a noticeable hop twang blends with oak and pepper, further dried by booze. Not the most complex quad, but singular on the palate and relatively drinkable. Finishes long and bittersweet.

M: Full-bodied, but not as chewy as it appeared on the pour. Ample carbonation adds to the drying aspect.

Not what I was expecting but damn tasty nonetheless. I'd heard this beer is rich and estery and sweet, appropriate for the time of year. This was much drier and "lighter" for the style, a "drinkable" Quadrupel.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color. It poured with quarter finger high tan head that died down a bit but consistently left a short head covering the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of dark fruits are present in the nose—plums and prunes seem to stand out in particular. The smell becomes stronger as the beer warms up.
T: Much like the smell, the overall taste is dominated by flavors of plums and prunes with slight amounts of associated sweetness. No alcohol is perceptible.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit smooth on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes nothing like something that is 10% abv—the alcohol is very well hidden.

Sampled from a 330ml bottle purchased at The Beer Dispensary in Apex, NC. Bottle says 2009.

A - Deep brown with a reddish tinge. Some light makes its way through. A small beige head.

S - Brown sugar, molasses and dark dried fruits.

T - Rich and deep but so so smooth. Brown sugar, molasses and roasted marshmallows. A perception of sweetness without being sugary. The 10% alcohol is well hidden.

M - Creamy and smooth with a moderate carbonation.

O - Fantastic depth of flavors that intrigue and challenge you with every sip.

Amazing beer! It's sweet, dark roasty fruit dominates the palate. You can taste the subtle oak flavor making this a perfectly balanced Quad. This is Pennepot on steroids!The beer hides the ABV very well making this brew very drinkable.This beer is Legendary! its just so smooth. This beats Abt 12 which is tough to do.

Bottom Line: World Class Quad!
