Pours a murky dark brown with creamy head that rapidly dissipates. Heavy aroma of prune juice and burnt sugar.
More dark fruit on the taste with some cherry tobacco notes, drying out somewhat, but not completely clean on the pallet.
Slightly tart finish. Possible orange peel note in finish. Alcohol still very evident through the heaviness of this beer.

2006 vintage, 330ml. brown bottle with Lot codes notched on the right-hand edge of the label: |C| |C| |BB|.

It pours a dark cherry-mahogany, with murkiness and flecks from the yeast and spices. Ruby hues come through when held to the light, the carbonation is happening. Over three fingers of thick ivory head eventually settle to a 1/4" and leave some sticky lace, clinging to the glass.

The smell is deep dark fruity, sweet and dusty. A lot going on here, malty, yeasty extravaganza in a most complex aroma, that begs for a taste.

The flavor is extremely dark and fruit filled, with notes of plum, cherry, fig, molasses, brown sugar and spices, several spices. The alcohol and carbonation keep the flavors moving, as well as help the balance of things, with the yeast. Sweet, spicy and fruity with a little dust.

Big body with the alcohol suppressed, makes this brew easy enough too drink...just don't forget what the 10% ABV can do to you. It's bigger than it seems yet not as warming as you'ld expect. Great tasty stuff!

2007 edition - A dark brown beer with a creamy head that clings to the glass. Some yeast flakes visible in the beer.

Smell is alcoholic and full of cacao, candisugar and roasted malt. The clear character of the Belgian yeast brings some higher alcohols and some fenols.

Taste is very much cacao powder. Roasted malts are present, but very mild and smooth. The alcohol is warming, but still mild considering the 10% ABV. There is a nice candisugar twist to this beer. The yeast adds notes of juniper and to a lesser extent coriander. Mouthfeel is thick, a little syrupy and sticky. A very complez and heavy beer that is a real sipper.

A 330ml bottle of 2006 vintage, served at cellar temperature and poured into a tulip glass

A - Poured a very dark brown, almost a cola like color with a very hazy and cloudy appearance pretty much obscuring everything inside and making it look a very thick consistency. A very nice three finger high head of tan colored lace came flying up to the top. Very active on the pour would be an understatement, this thing was all over the place. Almost came out of the top of the glass. After a few more minutes, it finally settled down and began to fold in on itself and become more of just a thin half-inch layer across the top. Tons of spider web like lace coating the inside of the glass, leaving tons of dripping lace. Hard to tell how much carbonation there was as it was just way to hazy. Some small amount of sediment visible on the bottom of the glass, which did not really move much, sort of just hanging around on the bottom of the glass for the duration of the session.

S - The aroma was very varied, deep and complex with different hints and small nuances of smell coming through at various different times during the course of the session. The first thing I was able to pick up with a very nice dark fruity aroma. Lots of raisins, figs, plums, and even a touch of grape showing up in here. Very well mixed and balanced between them but leading more toward the sugary notes as it started to warm up. Lots of spice was evident as well right from the start. A sort of odd nutmeg like spice along with a touch of cinnamon, and sugar. Some aromas of oak or other wood like characteristics starting to come through now as well. The profile is really starting to thicken up now and get a bit complex on me. Some light grassy like smells along with touches of earthy grains all floating around in there as well. Overall really quite full and at the same time very well balanced. Major factor here was the raisin like fruits that were the only constant in the aroma the entire time.

T - The first sip of this just started to bring on wave after wave of thick evolving flavor that really was showing off quite well and became increasingly more complex with each and every sip. The first notes that came across were very rich, sugary notes of raisins, which were just a wonderful way to start off the whole thing. Deep dark fruity flavors were the norm on this was with prunes and figs lining up behind it, quickly delving it deeper and deeper. A very strong presence of sugar was next up, really pushing through and drying to lighten it up. A touch of something sour playing around in the back, and just briefly showing up in the flavor before diving back down and out of site again. Rolling on some nice earthy, oak like notes starting to come now with spices becoming more and more dominant. Cinnamon and nutmeg, even some all spice and a hint of banana keeping developing it further. The finish brought everything back together again and just kept evolving it and drying you out, making you come back and get another sip so that you could bring it back to where it was before. Really, no hint of any kind of alcohol in this one, which to be honest was remarkable for something that should have been so big. Overall, I was quite pleased with the overall flavor and thought that it really developed quite well.

M - This was a very thick ale, not quite full bodied, but damn close and it had such a luscious and creamy smooth body that it was really a pleasure to take each passing sip, as each one was better then the one before that. Really a tremendously good beer here. The carbonation held up excellently and really pushed the entire thing into overdrive, allowing the flavors to really pop and explore the full range of possibilities. Great smooth finish, though not intensely dry, it was more sugary and long flavors of spice persisted for a good long time afterward.

D - Now see this category can become tricky at times only because you get the situation where something is so incredibly drinkable, but at the same time, it has a high ABV so it leaves you in the situation of what to do, In this case the answer was simple, you just keep drinking. It was really just that easy to do. There was just no hint of any kind of alcohol in this whatsoever and the flavors were so rich and bold, with such and in-depth and wonderful profile that it was truly hard to say no to this one. I could have easily had another without any incident, it was just that good. So smooth and delicious.

Overall, I thought this was a really great Belgian ale. The flavors were rich and pure, mingling so well and cross such a wide range of style that it was almost impossible to nail down where it was coming from .A deep dark ale; this one would surely please anyone who gives it a try. Does it live up to the hype? I will let you decide that, my feelings are kind of mixed on the subject personally, but one thing for sure, it is damn good.

2006 bottle, poured in a big wine glass at 56 F/ 13 C.

Deep red-brown, fizzy beige head that mostly dissipates, lace in solid rings.

Aroma strikes a nice balance between fresh and dark elements. Fresh white grape and young pine, with dark bread, toffee, cocoa, and mild spice.

Flavor of fresh sweet grape and apple juice, then dark sweet dough, raisins, chocolate, and nuts. Quite sweet, in a good way. Lingering nuts and chocolate, with a little fruit hanging on too, quite tasty.

Texture is good overall, but a little fizzy. Swirling does help. Quite drinkable, it somehow isn't heavy.

Good characterful beer. I'd like some Christmas pudding with this.

I asked for this beer at Bier Circus in Brussels, and the bartender told me that they didn't stock it because the brewers were not "real brewers" or words to that effect. However, I found the beer at Beer Mania, and real brewers or not, I found both this at the Old Fisherman's Ale to be quite good beers.

Poured a dark brown after exploding out of the bottle onto the counter and floor. Minimal head despite the overcarbonation. Aroma was complex - malty, sweet, with dried fruit notes and lots of slightly roasty maltiness accented by cherry notes. Full mouthfeel hit me first - you pucker a bit like a red wine full of tannins - the flavor is some coffee and dried fruit. I thought it tasted a bit like apricots and dried cherries. Delicious.

I would highly recommend this beer.

Bottle from Green's, Ponce location. Accidentally grabbed this one while looking for the regular Pannepot for a trade - once I realized what it was, I ran to the other Green's for my trade Pannepot and cracked this one right open! Poured into a Watou chalice.

Appearance: Pours a chocolate brown body with ruby hues and a coffee-colored foamy, bubbly, quickly-dissipating half-finger head. Floaties abound. Looks like what a quadrupel should look like, and (from my notes) is very similar to the import version.

Aroma: Mild, far more mild than the import. Spices are far more muted, fruits are kicked up a notch - and there are a lot of higher, sweet, lighter fruit notes in this one. Everything else remains pretty much the same, until ...

Taste: The taste. Yeah, this one's definitely all about the fruity, malty notes and less about the spices. There's still cinnamon and nutmeg there, maybe even a hint of Chinese five-spice, but it's largely raisins, dates, sweet cherries, pears, and banana, with hints of other toasted malts taking a definite back seat (springy, citrusy coffee). There's a dose of fusel, estery alcohol here, too, but it's actually a little better than in the import version, IMO, because of the way it melds with the lighter fruits - this may only apply to you if you like rum raisin ice cream. Rates a 4.5, but a very high, almost-5.0 4.5.

Mouthfeel: Big, pillowy, fluffy, crunchy, though a little uneven. Precisely what you'd expect from a good Belgian quadrupel.

Drinkability: A completely different beer from the import version, in my opinion. This one barely tastes spiced at all, and what spice that is present gets subsumed in the alcohol. In some ways it's better, in some ways not so good, but it's definitely worth seeking out, just like the original. Next time I'm down in Atlanta, I intend to pick up one of each so I can do a horizontal.

Vintage 2006

Pours a very dark brown with a dense one inch of tan head that has great retention. Heavy lacing is left on the glass surface.

The aroma is packed full of dark fruit, spice, candied surgar, and alcohol.

Complex flavors of figs, dates, prunes, raisins, not overly sweet, and some warmth from the alcohol. Spice is unusual and unidentifiable. I usually do not like alcohol flavor in my beer but it adds another flavor profile I was not able to appreciate in other beers.

Medium body with low carbonation. Semi-creamy texture to the body until the alcohol stings the tongue.

The 10% ABV is noticable but is not harsh. Not going to drink more than a bottle during a session. A bit expensive as well but I liked this Quad more than others I have drank.

Vintage 2006

Pours garnet brown with amber edging, and a chill haze with fine particulates in suspension.
A solid two inch head of dense, beige foam reluctantly settled to a thick skim coat and plenty of whipped lacework.

Aromatics lead off with spice-dusted raisins, dark rum, and chocolate-drizzled grape jam.
Hints of coriander, nutmeg, white pepper, cloves, and anise. Some brown sugar steps forward as well as a trace of bannana.
Finishes with a mild vineous note.

Medium bodied, with a creamy mouthfeel and tacky. Lightly chewy and sticky.

Grape jam, ripe fruit, rich malt, and spiced rum start the pallet. A warming boozy note quickly steps forward and warms throughout.
Tangerines, grape bubblegum, sugar-crusted cloves, plump raisins, and doughy malt follow through.

Finishes with a lingering warmth, tacky sugars, and fading spice.

I think this one could improve even more with a couple more years in the cellar, minimum.

Very much looking forward to the new version, which will be unspiced, and as I recall, a bit drier.

Bottle poured into a snifter.

Pours dark brown out of the bottle and settles into a dark mahogany in the glass. The head is fluffy and off-white and dissipates fairly quickly to a ring with good lacing. The aroma is sweet with dark fruit, plums and raisins, and a bit of candied sugar and roasted malts. There are some spices in the aroma but very faint. The taste is a little less complex than the original version with a little less spiciness and a heavy dose of grape sweetness. There's a little bit of cola flavor in there as well on top of a roasted malt base with some caramel tones. The mourhfeel is medium bodied with a little less carbonation than the original. There is a little less sour kick on this one and, for me, leads to a slightly more drinkable beer. Either way, this is a slight notch below the original but a great beer on its own.

A - Very dark brown, with some lighter orange highlights. A thick off-white head with some visible carbonation and good retension.
S - Very sweet, malty scents with dark fruits and even grains detectable.
T - Starts off sweet and smooth, tends toawrds a dry, alcoholic finish passing through a warm fruity center full of red berries, cherries, molassess and even maple.
M - Heavy bodied, quite thick and modestly carbonated. Quite cloying, but smooth.
D - Doesn't drink like a 10%, but it's still heavy. Quite a good beer.

Pours a dark cola color with tan specks of yeast suspended throughout. A small, resilient tan head is present which is reminiscent of froth on top of a cappuccino. I smell toffee, rose, grapes, and caramel. Tastes of raisins, figs, sugary malt, pepper, and finishes with ginger (nice of them to help clear the palate before the next sip). The perfect amount of sweetness, nowhere near cloying. Surprisingly smooth. Creamy with a dry finish. The alcohol is almost entirely hidden. Overall, delicious! It is a complex yet very drinkable quad.

2006 bottling poured into a Chimay glass.

Great dark brown color. Extremely lively head. Excellent lacing that lasted till the last drop.

This is a truly a unique beer. I have never had a quad like this. Extremely well balanced. There are hints of star annise as well as sweet candy flavors.

Extremely smooth and drinkable for the high ABV. Don't get me wrong this is a sipper but I could drink this all night long.

Here's to the "Sturdy Brewers" for another great beer.

Highly Recommended.

2006 vintage. Pours an opaque dark brown with a medium tan head. Dissipates rather quickly to leave a foam film on top. Very little lacing.

Smells of roasted malt, spices, dark fruits, and caramelized sugar. This theme carries on to the taste, where roasted chocolaty malt is very strong. Plum and grape esters come through, along with spices, hops, and just a hint of alcohol. Very balanced, complex, and mellow brew.

Mouthfeel is very good. Not quite as velvety as something like Westvletern 12, but close. Very light carbonation--this is what I would hope a beer like this would feel like.

Very drinkable brew that I can only assume will get better and better with age.

Thanks Carlos for cracking open this beautiful 750 for our tasting!

Red wine, spice and raisins in the aroma.

Complex taste. Raisins, grapes, wine and brown sugar play together. Woody and slightly vinous. Lots of spice character.

High carbonation yet quite rich - but not thick nor cloying in any way. Brown sugar spice on the finish.

Very nice beer. Side by side with the regular Pannepot, this beer is just not quite as good. Is this a great beer? Yes. But, the oak aging seems to take a little away from the base beer while making the flavors conflict ever so slightly - although, this beer is also slightly more complex than the base beer as well.

Quite simply, I'll take regular Pannepot over this just barely (it has taken me a long time to come around to this conclusion - used to be that I couldn't stand the spices in regular Pannepot!), but would jump at the chance to drink either one!

Also, here is my review from having it on tap at the Kulminator quite a while back. However, I cannot be sure this was actually the beer I had (although it sounds similar enough), so I will leave this as reference, but have it not count toward the score now that I have a proper review from the bottle.

I got to actually have this on tap at the Kulminator in Antwerp. Lucky me, I know. It was actually quite interesting, as it is quite different on tap than from the bottle (the bottled version not being the reserve). Most significantly, I found the bottled version to be a little too black licorice in taste. But then again, I don't really like black licorice.

On tap, the flavors melded together better, eliminating the emphasis on the licorice. Beautiful dark pour with a bit of head. Nice, spicy, licorice-y smell. Taste was wonderful. Like a cross between a quad and an imperial stout. Sort of. With some good spices thrown in too. Mouthfeel on tap was exceptional. Very full bodied, but very smooth. Also, no hint of alcohol from this serving. Drinkability was very good considering the alcohol.

Anyway, this is a beer worth trying. You've probably never had anything like it. Go try it.

That song, which is now playing over and over in my head, is the single best track from a wonderful Irish band that never got the respect they so richly deserved. It would also be fitting background music to this Danish version of what looks to be a well-respected quad. Here's hoping it's also a delicious quad. 2006 vintage.

Raspberry-chocolate with gorgeous accents of radiant raspberry red. Bright backlighting will be rewarded. The pale caramel crown looks pretty good for such a high ABV ale. No more than a few shards of lace are sticking to the sides of the snifter. With a better looking lid and more lace, the appearance would have easily earned a bump.

After solving the puzzle of the added herbs and spices, the aroma is a minor letdown. Great was expected... good was delivered. The beer smells like a well-crafted BSDA. Each sniff delivers dark caramel, a hint of cocoa, medium-dark fruit (especially berries) and a light sprinking of spice.

Pannepot is not a beer that overwhelms the taste buds with big beer bluster. It's much more refined than that. It's also growing on me more and more with each passing ounce. For starters, the mouthfeel and the well-masked alcohol make it feel like a much smaller beer than the ABV would suggest. Not that that's a bad thing.

The flavor profile is reminiscent of a well-aged English barleywine. There are boatloads of blackberry and cherry fruitiness. I also get oranges, plums and raisins soaked in chocolate liqueur, light molasses and vanilla. I'm guessing that it was oak-aged, at least briefly. The complexity is positively mind-boggling as the bottom half of the bottle approaches.

Coriander is easily appreciated. Cinnamon and thyme are hard to appreciate. This is a deliciously sweet sipper that has just the right amount of dark candi sugar. Flaked corn isn't used often, but it's hard to argue with the final product. In the end, specific ingredients don't really matter. If the beer works, it works.

The final pour murks the beer up from nearly opaque to opaque. It also adds more raisin and prune flavors to the mix. Although the mouthfeel is lighter than it could be, it also works in the grand scheme of things. Thick and sticky wouldn't have worked at all.

Pannepot Old Fisherman's Ale (Danish Version) is a wonderful quadrupel that should come in 750 ml bottles. My measly 11.2 ounces is now gone (already?!) and I was just getting into a groove. It'll be interesting to see how the version brewed for the American market stacks up to this one. Pretty well, I'll bet.

Many thanks to Tevering99 for the extra. I've been wanting to try this for a while now.

Pours a murky brown with an inch or two tan foam head. For the style, attractive.

Smell is sweet, sweet, sweet. Caramel, belgian candi, and ... brown sugar? The taste is much the same, overwhelmingly sweet with some spices in there to give it complexity. Plums and raisins make an appearance.

I was really afraid that I would drink this and be unable to tell the difference between this and the "normal" Pannepot. Unless my taste buds are completely deceiving me, they both share a similar fruity base, but are completely different animals. These has much less complexity in the fruit/spice background, and is a much sweeter beer (though they're both high on the sugariness).

Good, but I prefer the other.

2006 vintage poured from a 12oz. bottle into a St. Bernardus goblet.

Appearance - Pours a dark dark brown, almost black. Head checked in at a respectable 1/2 finger length. Color of the head was an off white almost tan color, and left a nice thick halo effect with a thin coating on top.

Smell - Very dry with a smell of roasted coffee. Dark fruits are definitely the headliners in the nose. Brown sugar blends in with a nice malt for some sweetness.

Taste & Mouthfeel - This beer is big and flavorful, and gets better and better with each sip. Very crisp and punchy in the beginning with loads and loads of dark fruit. Huge huge sweet malt lays down a backbone for this beer. The finish is not to be outdone as this brew closes with a sweet drying finish unlike any brew i've had before. Chocolate and spices play a nice role as well.

Drinkability - I've only had the Danish version of this one, and would love to see how the American version pairs up. A very unique brew, and one I tend to enjoy. Very complex and very sweet to boot. Sweetness keeps the drinkability down.

2006 version into the Duvel tulip.

Murky brown pour with a thick creamy constant head that never fades out...

Superbly complex aroma of brown sugar, raisins, grapes, a touch of chocolate, perhaps some earthy oak, and loads of other things that seem to rush up out of the glass at me... Damn, this really smells delicious...I mean really delicious...

Oh... And I'm not disappointed at all... This is just terrific...a perfect blend of sweet dark fruits blended with brown sugar and vanilla with some definite chocolate notes that finishes with the slightest of booziness that sets this off....very earthy and dark...

2006 vintage for the Danes into Cab glass

Beautiful dark chestnut body with ample carbonation. Chewy, maple walnut ice cream-colored head dissipates quickly and exhibits sufficient lacing.

Mildly soapy hop presence - brown sugar cinnamon with ginger and sarsparilla - a little tin presence when cold.

Creamy - almost like ice cream with strong spice profile of cinnamon, ginger root, sarsparilla in the chewy braised-like malt. Tough to shake the tinniness but after a while warming it starts to dissipate. Slight smoke and wood chips emerge with warmth.

Extremely hearty and chewy mouthfeel...like a warm caramel apple sundae. Tight grip, almost tangy.

Overall very enjoyable parts of the offering but they aren't necessarily synced up with each other as well as would be desired; strong effort nonetheless.

750 ml bottle from 2006 Vintage. Shared with family a few weeks back.

The beer poured a deep black body with a very thick tan head, fluffy and rich. The beer had a deep earthy nose, some chocolate tones as well. The taste gave me dried fruit up front and then some alcohol tones as well. Very pleasing. There is some subtle but distinct wood notes as well from the barrel aging. This version of Pannepot is an excellent, well balanced and complex beer. I only wish I had tried this bottle along side the other versions of Pannepot. Maybe next time.

Poured from a bottle into a Chimay chalice.

Poured a dark, reddish brown with some of-white head that quickly dissipates. Nose was faint with some dried fruit, rainsins, and some of the classic quad metal (not too much, though). Taste was spicy and sugary with ripe fruit, some alcohol and a pleasant finish. Mouthfeel was smooth all the way through.

What a great quad. I need to seek out some more of this stuff!

A- Poured from an 11oz bottle into a chalice. Pours a dark chestnut brown with red highlights. There was no head retained on this beer.

S- Dark malts with an almost metallic smell that I come to expect from quads.

T- A lot of dark malts with notes of chocolate and caramel. Again a bit of metallic taste with this brew. This is a very tasty quad but I am always at a loss for adjectives when describing quads.

M- Nice carbonation and that makes it feel very creamy.

D- I like this beer a ton. This may be the best quad I have yet to have. Certainly up there with Roch 10 and Westy 12.

My initial impression of this beer is old pennies. I'll wait and see if it improves. There is something interesting going on underneath those old pennies, but diggin' through a pile of shit for a dollar bill ain't my bag.

As it warms, the old penny remains but is married with cinnamon. Now, I really like cinnamon as a spice, I cook a lot of savory dishes with it, so I'm not the sort of dude who thinks cinnamon is a monodimensional spice, but I really don't think it belongs in beer. This is a good case in point. Underneath the cinnamon there is a nice fig presence. Not undrinkable, but skirting the edge.

The more I drink it, the more "chocolate" starts to come through the mess that is this beer. About the only thing it has going for it right now is the booze factor. The old penny flavor is still dominating, despite my best efforts to scry through it.

Yeah, there is a lot going on with this beer, but much of what is going on isn't good and that which is, is obscured by all the nastiness. I guess if one is inclined to like quads (I'm not) it isn't bad, but really. I mean, I can appreciate a style I do not like, but I cannot appreciate this beer.

Having never before had this brew in any of it's different
incarnations, I admit I was pretty damn excited to give it a whirl. Poured into a St. Bernardus chalice. Smells of figs, raisins, malt, and nuts. Superb on the palate; plummy, raisiny, almost vinious. With a depth of character that could cause one to contemplate drinking 4 or 5 of these in one day just to nail down all the tastes/senses that this outstanding beer presents. I love Achel Extra, but this to me is WAY better...Now I'll have to get my hands on the other versions.
